Policy Check on This (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by transzalore
So my SM opened the store this morning, wasn't feeling great, then did a temp check about 2 hours in and popped a fever of 100.4. Immediately told customers we were closing the store, great, that's a good call.

Me and the other barista partners worked another half hour prepping stuff for later, *got him water and tea*, were told SB would cover up to 3 hours lost time- then told SB WOULDN'T SUPPORT the lost time in-between the store closing/reopening- and we were told we would reopen with the closing SSV at 11:30, and could come back to "make up hours" we "lost". I work another job, barely make hours for insurance cutoff, and get so little time with my partner and kid already.

Is this SB policy, or even legal, to not pay/credit employees for missing work due to a temporary store closure due to sickness? I know COVID pay is not a thing, but this seems cold or inaccurate, even for the Siren.

I believe its legal. hours not worked are hours not paid - from my sm. unionizing though can protect hours not worked to still be paid. thats one of our noneconomic proposals listed on the twitter account. :)

I think this is location dependant. Starbucks rules won’t be on your side for this, labor laws will.

Yeah, we got paid for the half hour after we closed, and prepped. Our ill SM was acting as our Shift, and the next available one was in at the later time, so we couldn't stay and clean. I'm not mad at him, I'm upset that the company we endure mountains of mobile orders during insane Cafe and drive peaks, shortages, broken equipment, and demanding customers for can't cover the absence time of a couple baristas and a sick manager because "we can't support COVID time policies anymore".

I know we're expendable labor, but the disconnect with how corporate WANTS the public and new hires to think it treats partners, and then how its policies REALLY treat partners, is just such a sucker punch.

If you're still in the store prepping and doing work you should still be getting paid regardless of whether or not the store is open. You should remain clocked in while you're doing work. When our water heater broke, we closed and everyone stayed on site cleaning the store while we waited for the repairs.
