Regarding an old post abt refreshers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by alexkerie
So I was on bar with my SM and he was asking as to why we still mix refreshers & tea with a lot (in his terms) water if we already cut it with water when we prep it.

A while ago (maybe like 5ish days ago), i saw a post that has since been deleted about shaking refreshers and someone explained in the replies about why we have to measure the base and water (or lemonade/coconut milk/etc) with the lines for not only quality but also about the caffeine content??? I can’t find it and it was really good info to not only share with my SM but also future trainees.

We cut it with water just because that's the recipe. The refreshers come in 4x concentrate, so we have to cut it with water twice. Did this to save space I'm pretty sure, we used to just pour 2x concentrate refreshers from the boxes into the shaker and added water there. And we brew "extra strength" tea and add water twice just because the company says to. I don't know what they're talking about caffeine content? Yeah we follow the lines to the recipe for consistency, keep the caffeine and flavor consistent, but idk about caffeine content?

I read it on here somewhere under someone’s post bc they weren’t shaking the refreshers/teas correctly and someone replied that they’re supposed to use the shaker and not the cup for measurement bc they could be giving them more caffeine that they didn’t ask for? I mean, if it’s just bc the company says to and no deeper reason other than cost and quality control, then whatever lol

Ah I mean fair? It's such a minuscule amount though, I'm not sure it entirely matters, but I'm glad that person cares about their customers!! :) But definitely no using the cup to measure haha, it'll taste a little different!

Oh absolutely, the person who wrote the post got offended we all told them that they’re supposed to use the shaker and not the cup lol.

But yeah, my SM was talking about the base/water ratio and I was like “there’s a reason but I don’t remember why” so here I am lol

The reason is because that's the recipe and making drinks to standard is how we make sure customers have a consistent experience.

Any given customer could be concerned about a number of factors such as caffeine, calories, or sugar content and when you deviate from standard the nutrition info is no longer accurate.

i remember the post! im really into shaking not only for recipe consistency but also because it chills and aerates the drink. ive had baristas blindfold me and have me say which was shaken because they didnt believe i could taste the difference lol

best example i ever saw is that its like bartending, they shake it with ice for a reason- it entirely changes the flavor. and even if u dont care ab that then it leads to the recipe inconsistency
