advice for a confused ssv (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lonely_bean294
Hi guys! My store manager has been seriously considering leaving starbucks, and recently brought up me trying for an asm position opening up at our store, which would eventually lead to me taking over the store once my current sm leaves.

A couple questions—I’m 19. I have almost 2 years of management experience since I was promoted to ssv as soon as I turned 18, and I’ll be turning 20 in a few months. Is that enough experience to start training to be an asm? I do a majority of the orders at my store, and I regularly help my current sm with the schedule (as much as a shift is able to, at least) and I am in charge of inventory management and any type of communications with baristas that my manager asks me to do. I know it’s a sizable amount of administrative work that I do, but I guess I just feel unprepared? A 15 year partner talked to me about it, and she said that she’d love to have me as the sm at the store once I was ready to take over, but I feel conflicted about the whole situation.

What would you guys do? And do any young sm’s out there have any advice for me? Anything is welcome!

you are 100% the perfect person for this position if you are okay consenting to the ridiculous hours and massive workload this opportunity presents. ASM is the worst pay:responsibility ratio in the company, with SM coming second, however the experience will take you miles having done it at this age. I was in exactly this position at 19 — i chose my mental health and eventually quit, because my store environment wasn’t good, but I can’t say I don’t get curious about what it would’ve been like to take this path quite often. You sound like you’re fully qualified to get the work down, and if you have a good store environment that will support you the whole way through this is a really good opportunity! Yes, you can absolutely be an SM at 20 or 21!

I was told by my DM that you cannot promote to ASM/SM at the store you currently work at. But maybe that varies by district. You used to not be able to promote to SSV at the same store, but I believe that changed long ago.

Must have! I worked at Starbucks for two years from 2011-2013 and was promoted to SSV and stayed at the same store, same with 2 other Shifts.

Same. Me and all the SSVs at my store stayed 🤷‍♀️

It will vary, if the need is there so be it. My ASM went to their old store and is now the “ASM/SM” until they promote into that SM role
