Should I quit before they fire me? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bagofrice_14
Hi, I've been a barista for around 9 months. I'm pretty good at my job, I like it, get along w the partners, everything. I've been struggling with mental health for a while now. Lately I've been late a few times, or just couldn't show up for my shift. I've already gotten a written warning, and today a partner texted me saying my manager was about to fire me. what's the best course of action here? I've never been in a situation before, I like my job but obviously it isn't going to work out either way. thanks for any help!!

Let your SM know what’s going on in your life. Ask if you could take a leave of absence and if/when you’re ready to come back you could text or call them to let them know. Mental health takes priority over everything in my opinion. It’s just bean water. Just be honest with your manager. You don’t need to tell them everything, just let them know you’re not 100% and if they’re a decent human they should understand.

As for late/calling off, just try to do your part and let someone know. Running late happens, but running late to every shift or calling off often only makes it a coin flip whether or not they should even schedule you. It isn’t fair to other partners when they have to pick up the slack for someone being late.

But I believe in you! Take whatever course of action you think works best, but don’t stress out over this job, it ain’t worth it. Best of luck with everything.

thanks for the response! right now I'm thinking of quitting without a two week notice, since I think they would rather fire me than let me stay two weeks. But I don't wanna leave my coworkers to deal with my shit, so maybe I could just offer to work whenever shifts they need me so this isn't an inconvenience to anyone else

That’s cool. Word of advice- if you quit you can’t file for unemployment. If you’re fired you can. Sure it sucks to get fired, but you can get some pay. If you don’t need to file for unemployment than do what’s best for you!

If they fire you, they have to pay unemployment. Of you quit, they don't. Depends on how dire your circumstances are and whether you can afford to forego unemployment.

I think this is state by state bc I fought for my unemployment for 6+ months after I was fired and never got it !! So i wouldn’t ride on that imo

Right there's no guarantee but just saying if you quit, you don't even have the option to try.

Typically not if you have well documented performance or attendance issues. If you live in an at-will state, you'd have a difficult time getting it.
