break table (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kitcat1210
soooo we don’t have a break table, we typically just use the managers desk since theres an extra stool back here. however he always has someone back here talking to him (often off the clock i might add) so that stool is ALWAYS taken and people cant take their breaks in the back, and its getting too cold to go outside, and not everyone has a car, i also feel like it’s unfair for us to have to sit in the cafe as we typically want a break FROM customers. many people have complained and i feel like a few years ago my old SM got in trouble for not having a break table in the back room for us. is it standard to have a break table in the back? id like to show my current SM the standard but cant find it, so im thinking i might be rembering wrong. id appreciate any help🥺

it’s not me im worried about, i have my car. but some of my baristas have expressed frustration so i promised them id look into it! our cafe is always super busy and noisy so theyve told me they hate sitting out there, which i totally understand thats not where id choose to take my break either. a lot of the ones without cars end up sitting on the floor in the back rather than the cafe bc its so busy all the time so i just feel bad for them😭

Hahaha. That’s funny.
I can’t sit in my lobby because everyone comes up to me to talk. One told me about his alcoholism and how it’s changed him…

Not really a standard to have a break table but depending where you work there might be a law but it’s kind of unlikely.

If you have partners just hanging out in the BOH, not clocked in, and they’re not scheduled that’s technically not allowed. That is an issue you could bring up to your SM. However if your SM has new hires being on-boarded or other managers back there then your SM can do that.

Honestly you could bring a chair from the lobby to the back and just sit. Sometimes I’ll try to find a small area in the BOH with the least traffic and just sit on the floor.

Ill also just go to the bathroom too and sit in there for 10 minutes. It’s not ideal but no one disturbs me lol.

Lol we don’t have room for that

lol there’s no standard for that. unless your state/county has a weird law requiring it.

This subreddit hasn’t been granted statehood so I doubt that very much
