Paying for car in front of them???(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by BatWeary
Errrr so I was in drive thru tonight and I had a car tell me they wanted to pay for the cop in front if them. Barista on bar said to just wait until the second car got to the window to cash both orders, but I had a bad feeling about it. Both orders together totaled $50-ish dollars & I wasn’t willing to risk the chance that they couldn’t pay for both orders for whatever reason & having to void/recovery $50 worth of items. My shift agreed that we wouldn’t do it, and the guy got mad at us.
(which my concern was valid seeing as he got to the window and realized he forgot his wallet & didn’t have apple pay on his phone…soooo)
(Also, I was told once -by a cop/sheriff I should add- that they aren’t allowed to accept free items since it could be seen as bribery? Is there any truth to that?)

It’s not bribery, however it is not approved by Sbux corporate to comp drinks like that. If you’re doing that, make absolutely sure (in no uncertain terms) that your SM is cool with it. Worst case scenario, it could be used against you and considered theft if your boss was looking for a reason to get rid of you. Not saying that will happen, but it’s best to be sure what their policy is!

Good on you for using your discernment there. That being said maybe it depends on the officer bc we regularly RNR for officers/firefighters/military/etc

^ they aren’t allowed to ask for them. but if you do it without being asked, that’s allowed. as long as your ssv allows it.

I had something like that happen it was sus tho for me. It was pretty dead and I was solo baring and dt. Had a customer order then come to the window . Then had another car at the order box telling me if they can pay for the car in front. I told her no 'cause you'd already have to be at the window to pay for them. Then she tried to explain how to let it happen, if I could just let them leave with their drinks and that she'd pay for them once she got to the window. I was like... no I can't do that. She didn't put up much a fight but I thought it was weird.

The sheriffs office I worked for they could not accept anything for free even coffee.

my serving job has a 50% discount for cops (🥴) and firefighters in uniform. they aren’t allowed to ask for it but if someone pays for their food/if we give them a discount w/o them asking for it then it’s fine.
