SSV’s can no longer work together?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by -everything-is-a-lie
My SM recently told me that ssvs can no longer work on the same shift together and we can only work as keyholder. So no more normal barista coverage shifts. To me this essentially just means our hiurs are getting cut even more. Has anyone else heard of this in their stores or is it just mine?

SSVs are allowed to work together and are able to be scheduled as coverage, but there is a metric that keeps track of SSV overlap that some districts are focusing on keeping low. This is how my ASM explained it to us, but obviously keeping the business open is top priority so they should still be willing to have multiple SSVs work together before they would shut down for a call out or something.

Lots of stores are doing this.

There’s a metric called the shift complement that basically boils down to making sure your store isn’t overspending on labor by staffing with the much more expensive SSVs instead of baristas, limiting how many hours SSVs should be scheduled per week. Your DM must be cracking down on it. Ours is, too.

That’s hilarious tho because my store has a supervisor who hasnt been trained for 2 months but theyre still getting paid as a supervisor and are just doing coverage shifts.

^this is exactly it

Barista here - I worked yesterday with 3 SSVs and an ASM on the floor all at the same time. SSVs at my store work together all the time.

I’ve worked a morning shift where literally all 5 SSV’s were on the floor at the same time (plus SM was doing admin in the back room). clean play is often 3 SSV’s, or 2 SSV’s + a barista.
to answer OP’s question, no, I haven’t heard this. though my store is currently dealing with a LOT of callouts and often SSV’s get called in to cover barista shifts because our baristas are either already working or won’t answer their phone, so there is that.

the morning/ mid plays at my store now have a minimum of 2 ssv's, a lot of the time 3, sometimes literally 4.
meanwhile i've been the only dedicated closing shift for 8 months. And i've never had an ssv buddy to close with :(
wolfydoe3 points8m ago
Same, I always have the sm, asm and another shift in the morning and on mids to close it drops so there's only two shifts and the amount of baristas

Union time!
BatWeary8 points8m ago
my store is a union store & we got told this 💀 not entirely sure what a union will solve if you haven’t come to a bargaining agreement (which most, if any, have not)
Praxlyn6 points8m ago
mfs think unions will solve every problem 😭this definitely depends on district bc I have had multiple other SSVs work together morning & night
BatWeary6 points8m ago
me too! i’m not sure why the sudden change but i don’t like it 😞 i love my ssvs!!!
i was complaining about being short staffed once bc everyone was actually sick & i kept getting told to unionize….. we DIDDDDD it just didn’t magically make covid, the flu and food poisoning magically disappear bruh
miniinovaa9 points8m ago
I haven’t heard that, probably a district thing unless your specific stores has had issues with something
MissKayleeCat5 points8m ago
It has to do with how “expensive” it is for stores the more ssv that work at a time.
upsidedown_americano3 points8m ago
Meanwhile my store just added enough shifts to always have 2 at ALL times…. It’s a lot LOL
aee782 points8m ago
We'd have to open later a couple days a week cause right now only shifts have availability to open 2 or 3 week days. Peak would be hell.
photo_rain2 points8m ago
Yeah I dont know about the shifts not being able to be coverage ever, but we are also being told about the shift complements and how there shouldn’t be an overlap. So much for raises eh? Our partners have all been cut a ton on hours too. We are all over it all right now
lewabwee1 points8m ago
It’s really annoying when they try to cut down on shift overlap
Torirock101 points8m ago
that’s stupid
YarnPuzzle1 points8m ago
Dang. I used to work at a store where I (shift) was pre-close and the 2 closers were also shifts. R.i.p. to them lol
dnims241 points8m ago
That’s wild to me. Just yesterday at my store (I’m a barista) we had like 3 shifts all working together. Still not sure why but coverage I guess 🤷🏻♀️
madihasson1 points8m ago
My manager recently told me the same thing. Shifts are only going to overlap 15-30 minutes a day in order for the store to save money 🙄 we also recently lost 4 shifts but she said we arent going to be hiring any more.
