Tips for negotiating pay during a shift interview? I have several years of experience as a teacher and I feel like that is definitely experience in leadership. But I have no idea how to negotiate things like that. (self.starbucksbaristas)

Actually*, you “can” negotiate wages as an SSV, but it’s the DMs decision. Baristas cannot negotiate wages
dazedandconfusedhere 36 points 8m ago
Baristas can too, but it’s usually denied because they can hire someone in cheaper (and it’s again DM decision)

You can get raises as a barista as well. It just depends on bad turnover at your current location. Got both raises I asked for. And 2 as a shift as well.

I was able to negotiate my previous pay of $17 until the pay bump to $19.05 in august. The starting pay was $15 at that time. My sm just had to get the dm approval which went through due to short staffing.

Starbucks doesn’t negotiate wages.

We absolutely will. I'm currently working with talent acquisition and have negotiated 3 partners in the past 2 weeks.

1 was a ssv others were baristas.
NOTcreative- 10 points 8m ago
Yep I promoted a barista who had previous management experience and got them the top pay for SSV

Looking at this thread, I'm not. Maybe people don't know how to ask for higher wages so they don't. It never hurts to ask.
nicolelynnejones 2 points 8m ago
They definitely do, especially for shifts
marigshu 22 points 8m ago
I don’t necessarily think you should be negotiating pay during the interview itself. If you don’t have the job yet, it may be a risky move.
kittykattt3 16 points 8m ago
It varies where you’re at. I’m at 22.92 as a SSV but no one has ever been able to negotiate in my experience and get higher pay
YouNatPatt 12 points 8m ago
I heard that when negotiating pay you there has to be evidence of pay or customer score increases. That may have been my old manager that just said that to get me not to look into it, but you could mention how you are going to push your future team to upsell and absolutely connect with very customer that they interact with.

your wage is all but set at starbucks. you likely wont be able to negotiate.
BlueMuffins92 11 points 8m ago
I negotiated for coming in at $2 higher than the SSV starting rate when I got hired. My SM asked for DM approval then got back to me. I had 5yrs if management experience and was taking a step back from my previous SM position to join Starbucks so I think they thought they we’re getting a lot of value for what they were paying. I made it very clear in my interview that I wasn’t desperate and already had multiple job offers. I told the SM that offered me the position that if I didn’t come in at X I’d be forced to take another offer and the turn around time for the rate approval was very quick.

Barista and SSV pays are set per market. There is no negotiation.
chinksauces 6 points 8m ago
Ppl telling you they’ll negotiate wages are either a small select few or not a licensed store

Starbucks does not negotiate unless you’re literally ASM and above

it make say they sbux does, but they dont
grayandclouded 1 points 8m ago
actually all of the starbucks i worked at were licensed AND allowed to negotiate wages. i didn’t do it but people i know did. willing to say we were an anomaly though, with the city/university i was in i think they were getting desperate for workers so they would negotiate to a certain point

I was able to negotiate my wage as a SSV. Definitely doable. If you don’t have another job to retreat to, it is a risky move.

In my case, I worked as a SSV for 1 year. I showed how well I do in the role and then I went to my SM and said something like, “I like my job here and I am good at it, but I don’t make enough to support my life. If I can’t make $X an hour then I will have to find another job. I found these other two similar jobs that pay $X an hour and I would rather stay here, but ultimately I have to be able to support my life.”

I am paid $23 an hour in CT if that matters to you.

They offered me $19.10 an hour for the ssv position, I was previously a barista. After the last raise I make almost $20. I didn’t think we could negotiate.
DeterminedJane 3 points 8m ago
Do y’all know the wage for a barista? Curious
siestasierra 9 points 8m ago
minimum for baristas is 15 and ssvs is 19.05
DeterminedJane 2 points 8m ago
State?
truecrimeANDchill 8 points 8m ago
Entire us. You may find higher in some markets but that’s the lowest company wide in USA
Revolutionary_Heat77 2 points 8m ago

Tell them the pay at your current job is higher than it actually is, and that you won’t settle for less but would really love to work for Sbux and hope they can make it work. If you have the experience it’ll be no issue, within reason of course (They don’t pay $30 an hour no matter what for example.) If it’s salaried, estimate an hourly figure. I had to divide the salary at my last job into an approximate hourly wage + more and I got exactly that down to the penny.

*Go to a licensed*

*Store if you want or think you*

*Can negotiate*

I have almost a decade in the military where they cram leadership training down our throat, and the majority of it was culinary so I know the ins and outs of safety and sanitization. I’m still at $19, however I didn’t want to push right away for more, I was gonna let it ride for a few months before asking. I feel like because we just got such a large pay jump recently most managers are going to shut down the convo where it begins. But if you’re dead set on asking id do it like this…

“So I know that shift pay starts at 19 an hour, however I feel like I’m above the cut due to *fill in the blank*” and always ask for slightly more than you actually want because your manager is almost guaranteed to haggle you down a bit.

The more you can mention the better, and if you bring in a typed resume with a list of reasons it will only help further your chances. Best of luck!

I negotiated. And got what I asked but I should have gotten more. There is always a pay range and it depends on your market. Just be prepared to speak on your leadership experience and how it will relate to Starbucks. Know what you’d do in tough situations, and make sure you’re comfortable coaching.
