Hey Y’all! New SBux Canadian Barista here looking for some insight.. (self.starbucksbaristas)

It’s only my second day of training but I got some of my schedule for the next coming weeks and honestly the shifts are so SHORT & very few. I was wondering if this is normal? I thought for a traininee we would be getting more hours so we could learn and absorb. Am I overthinking it or is this normal?

Couple of factors could play into this. First and foremost your trainer’s availability vs your availability could be at an interjection. I may be wrong since I’m a US partner but last time I heard it was about a 2 week training period. So smaller shifts may benefit in a longer period. Also different days for different tasks. I know when I trained partners we would have 2 morning shifts to learn the basics of opening and get a pinch of what working peak is like. I would hope some shifts are the full 7.5 hours. But most shifts going on into the future will normally be about 4.5 hours.

That totally make sense in regards to my trainers availability, I didn’t take that in as a factor in all of this. Just kind of bummed out as I gave the manager an open availability and said I was eager + able to work many honours at least 30+ forsure.
It kind of sux! The rest of my schedule is looking like a lot of 4.75 hours as if I’m a high school student again! (No judgement there but it’s what it feels like)
Is that the normal shift for all partners usually 4.75 hours?

4 month Canadian partner here, basically my whole first week was short shifts like that, it was 2 hours of actual training and then 2-2.5 hours practice with my trainer. Once we got on to stuff like hot and cold bar it was longer shifts. The training portion was still organized the same way but then I had coverage hours after my training
