Not really important :) flexibility issues... mostly a rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Dannidalion
TLDR: manager said my schedule is flexible, but isn't accommodating my situation

So before being hired, I told my manager that I am living with my cousin, my aunt, and my grandma. Someone has to be at home with my grandma at all times because she has dementia, and is a fall risk… She said in response that Starbucks is very flexible
I just did the last day of training, and was told that my availability doesn't look good enough, in their defense I did muck up the confusing availability thing online lol (I fixed it today)

So I'm available every day, except on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, I have to be home before 3 PM so my cousin can go to work

I also mentioned I prefer 3-4 hour shifts (I'm overweight but working on it :p), and could do up to six days a week
She said that I can't do three hour shifts, even though I looked up that the shortest shift is 3 hours?

Idk, she mentioned laying me off if I can't work enough but the minimum is 12 a week and I'm prepared to do way over that? What else can I do? I need this money, I like the job

The three hour shift thing isn’t really feasible from the business side. My shortest shifts are 4hrs and there’s only one day a week that those happen, if at all. Even though you have a reasonable amount of availability, that kinda goes out the window if you are only willing to work 3 maybe 4 hours each shift.

Fair enough, I suppose I could do a 6 once a week since I'd get the lunch break.. my only real issue with the length is my weight, I had to get really expensive shoes and insoles just to survive the 4-5 hour shifts haha
But I'm working on my weight so ik it'll get easier :)

4 hour shifts are generally the minimum SMs will schedule, just for the logistics of scheduling

I have had several people who normally work 5hr/5.5hr shifts say to me that 6hr shifts are not as bad as they seem, because that 30min break really does help balance things out. To the point where I see people with physical limitations prefer 6hr shifts over 5hr shifts just so they can get that 30

I would say give the longer shifts a shot, and if they end up being too difficult at this time you can file for an accommodation to have shifts under x hours as long as you’re able to get medical documentation
