Is my sm allowed to say that or decide this?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Fresh-Brilliant-439
I didn’t have my ssv or st number and i was not feeling the best since last night. So I texted them in the work group chat. And the sm just called me and basically told me that it is/was not my call to decide to not come in to work . That it is their call to decide if i come in or not even though they know i am not feeling the best.l told them i had had headaches and a really bad stomachache.

I don’t know what’s going on there but by not calling the store to call out you are technically in violation of the call out/sick policy. If you dont call the store its a no call no show situation since the work group chat isn’t an official Starbucks communication channel.

This is the correct answer
hexsan9124 points8m ago
See, that’s what the protocol is in the book. But when I called my store once to tell them I was sick and couldn’t make it in, my shift lead told me, “Well you need to find coverage or else I’m marking you down as a no call/no show.” I argued with them on the phone, “I’m literally on the phone with you right now, how is this a no call no show?” And they just kept repeating themself like they were fucking inept.
RosieHarlan10 points8m ago
Yeah i cant really tell if shifts are just ignorant on the policy or just don’t want to deal with finding coverage on their shifts. When someone calls out sick on one of my shifts i dont bother trying to find coverage. I only get annoyed when someone no call no shows and I have to waste my time waiting for them and calling them and their excuse was that they were sick and they thought texting the SM while they are sleeping at 1am was sufficient as a call out.

This is standard at other places like my Safeway licenses bux too

Idk why no one is answering your actual question lol but, no your manager isn’t the one who makes that call. You decide whether you’re well enough to come into work.
Editing for clarity here: you still have to call the store to say you’re not coming in. But the manager is not allowed to tell you that it’s up to them whether or not you come in.
RosieHarlan20 points8m ago
But OP never actually called in sick which changes the context of whatever is going on with their strange interaction.
dahmerpalms7 points8m ago
Not really, the store wasn’t even open and OP messages the manager and the manager says “I get to decide whether you’re too sick to come in or not”. You can judge that as an isolated thing. Yes of course OP should still call once the store opens, according to policy
But either way it is not up to the manager to decide whether an employee is too sick to show up
RosieHarlan6 points8m ago
The point is still that OP still never called out. And OP didnt message the manager they messaged the group chat and the manager called at an unspecified time later. You never send group or personal texts to call out because that’s technically a no call no show. you always have to wait for the store to open to call out.
The response is super weird and we can only take OPs word on what was said bc any jerk manager I know would have just left it alone and given them a write up for violating the call out/sick policy.
dahmerpalms6 points8m ago
I guess we just disagree on what the “point” is, then. To me the point is a simple response to the question “can a manager tell me that it’s up to them to decide if I’m sick enough to not come into work” and that answer is no.
I don’t believe any additional context changes the core of that.

i messaged the manager privately in the groupme . because no one ever told me the proper call out procedure since my old manager was lenient

You are able to call in sick, your manager can’t say that you’re not sick enough or anything like that. You get to decide if you are too sick to work. If you find that your manager is still pushing this on you, then I would suggest reaching out to a DM or PRSC.
However for future reference, you technically did not call out for your shift. Group chats are unofficial forms of communication and not an accepted means of calling in. The correct and official way would be to wait until the store opens and call into the store then, informing the keyholder on duty you are sick and won’t be coming in.
bottlehalffull1 points8m ago
What's the actual policy if you ARE the keyholder because if I'm sick and unable to open I absolutely have to call or text my sm on her personal cell as well as the AM Shift group chat.
oryxii1 points8m ago
As keyholder I have called in sick maybe twice for my opens over 4 years as SSV. Those times I contacted my manager via text and posted in our group chat to see if another SSV can cover HOWEVER I would only do this because I knew my manager was very chill with communication through text. I think it really depends on the management dynamics. I think for SSVs it is appropriate to contact your manager through text (or DM if you’re unable to contact the manager) if it’s for something like an opening shift. Technically the correct thing to do would be to call into the store but obv if you’re the opening SSV there’s no one to call into lol.
Unfortunately I’m not sure if there is an official policy for this outlined in the handbook, though I feel as if there definitely is a policy for a situation like this. I quit a few months back so I can’t check or anything.

You couldn’t google the store phone number?
Fresh-Brilliant-439 [OP]4 points8m ago
Would i still call the store even though they haven’t opened
Specialist_Salt_50719 points8m ago
You wait until they open and then call
WAtransplant20212 points8m ago
Yep this the answer. Your SM was being purposefully obtuse. You were giving them a heads up to get the shift covered as I assume it was an opening or early in shift.
Next time text your SM and SSV and state in the text that you are giving them a courtesy heads up you won't be in and will call the store when it opens to formally call our.
Pickle-Chunk2 points8m ago
I mean or call before they open. They may not answer but try again.
pastelrose73 points8m ago
It is your decision whether or not you are well enough to come in as long as you pass the partner symptom check. If you didn't, however, you cannot work. You did not actually call the store, which is a violation of policy.
coffee_angel8012 points8m ago
I'm an SM also have an HR degree. Legally you just have to say I'm sick and can't come in your employer can't demand that you do. However if it is more than 2 times in six months or 4 times in a year, meaning 2 separate occasions not consecutive days they can write you up for time and attendance even if you have a doctor's note. If you're sick for a week it still only counts as one instance. If one of those instances is COViD that does not count as one of the instances as long as you have a positive test from a testing facility.

TO clarify yall. I messaged the manager privately in the app called groupme. i was not aware of the proper calling out procedure because my previous manager didn’t bring that up and i called out by txtng him. And he didnt say anything. I didnt message the groupchat where everyone is . I DMD them . But regardless they said its not my call to say if im sick enough or not to come in to work
