STAY HOME??? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sydhasknees
i’m begging yall stay tf home if ur sick? no one wants you at work when ur coughing and sneezing behind ur mask bro at LEAST double mask
pastelrose7 165 points 8m ago
i agree but this is not the fault of baristas. if baristas are not given adequate sick time, and are pressured by the rest of the team, they will come in. starbucks makes people feel individually responsible when coverage can't be found or things go south because they're not there. people can't afford to stay home when they're sick.
diphenhydranautical 13 points 8m ago
yeah i personally can not afford to miss a shift because my manager gives me like ~18 hours a week when i ask for 25-30… i have another job too, and i started at starbucks because i couldn’t get enough hours at my first job🫤
pastelrose7 2 points 8m ago
me too… if i got sick and was out for a week i would get evicted from my house
GoldennTrash 114 points 8m ago
yea apparently that’s what has been happening at work. people coming in sick even the manager. i’d prefer if ppl would stay home, but unfortunately everyone is too poor to not work, it sucks honestly
kintsukuroi-3 111 points 8m ago
While I agree that folks should rest when sick, perhaps you should be directing that energy to the employer who does not provide the necessary sick pay and coverage for employees who fall ill.

and get my hours cut because my manager is petty?? nahhh😭
thebestdaysofmyflerm 19 points 8m ago
It isn't the manager's fault. They have no control over sick pay or coverage.

There’s multiple ways to submit anonymous concerns to corporate. You can even do it in the weekly partner pulse and if enough of us do it, they may hear us out.
bestowcurse 27 points 8m ago
Yeah I'll remember to stay home the next time a manager threatens me with putting me as a no call no show bc I didn't come in :/

seconding another commenter's point here in saying that you're absolutely right, people should stay home if they're sick (especially if contagious), but that the anger about this should be directed at any management that, through intimidation or outright hostility, keeps sick partners coming in. happens all too often. the literal policy is that if a partner calls off sick, it's up to whoever the manager is at that store that day to find coverage. i wish more people knew that :(
diphenhydranautical 1 points 8m ago
i think enough people know that, they just don’t care
Iamdecaptainnoww 8 points 8m ago
Starbucks needs better policies in place in terms of paid sick leave. People can’t afford to take off work even if they need to. It’s atrocious that a multi billion dollar company is allowing its employees to work while sick with Covid and other illnesses. But this is beyond shifts’ control or even store managers, this is corporate greed.
ittybittybakerkitty 8 points 8m ago
Yes stay home but sadly bills don't stop (hope you have enough sick time) and sometimes managers make you feel like shit for calling out even when you sound like you're on your death bed.
Carsatan 1 points 8m ago
This entirely,

I've been guilted when I'm literally throwing up on the phone calling in about how I'm not being a team player by calling in
apple_low 8 points 8m ago
Everytime I see posts like this I'm reminded when my manager kept badgering me to do my weekend shifts despite getting sick FOR THE SECOND TIME that month. Like, clearly my immune system was off-balance. Why infect my coworkers and the masses and tire my immune system even more 😭😭
sydhasknees [OP] 2 points 8m ago
ik it’s unrealistic but i wouldn’t have answered😩 because i’m on my deathbed and you need coverage at 6am? NO.
berryverypho 3 points 8m ago
when i worked at starbucks i was extremely sick and called out 4 DAYS before my scheduled shift for person family matters ontop of being sick. my manager called me and fired me for being sick for more than 2-3 shifts, even while in the hospital. with a note. & - i understand u need staff however you cant expect your staff to come in and get everyone else sick. its a literal safety procedure to stay home when sick. and my manager was trying to force me to come in while i was throwing up constantly for days on end.
the pressure to be at the minimum wage job bc they need u, vs being sick. you cant do both /:.
siestasierra 3 points 8m ago
adding even more to the conversation in the comments, although there are many difficult managers who are way out of bounds regarding intimidating baristas to come in even when they are sick, many of them likely would not be as bad if it wasn’t from even higher up management and corporate agendas.

I work at a college Starbucks so we all just started about 3 months ago from the day we started my manager talked about how his kids and wife where really sick but no one thought anything about it he literally brought his kids in the back room and brought them cake pops one day 😭 than he started coming in coughing with no mask that’s when we all started wearing masks then Less than 2 weeks after opening we had to close multiple times because we where so short staffed because everyone was sick and my manger was the main person complaining like he didn’t bring this here 💀💀💀
lewabwee 2 points 8m ago
Double mask doesn’t do anything. Kn95 or n95 or bust.
SpicyKittyNoodles 2 points 8m ago
THANK YOU! I was doing my first training shift and my trainer was telling me that a bunch of people were out in our store sick, some with covid other with a cold and here he was coughing all over me and being sick while saying “I think I might be getting sick from them I hope not though” and he wasn’t wearing a mask. All this being said, he was also my shift supervisor too which makes it worse. Two training shifts in, I catch whatever he has, and then my partner catches it. A week and a half later we both still have it.

my store manager came in the day after he found out his wife tested positive for covid and didn't wear a mask or anything and the next day he tested positive😪😑 luckily I still wear mine and I didn't get sick but like bruh what did you expect
VIOLETJBANNON 1 points 8m ago
i would by my store is super understaffed and my Store Manager guilts me if i call out
[deleted] 1 points 8m ago
Most of us would love to. I am scared one of these days they're going to fire me for staying home though
PauseAccording20 1 points 8m ago
I’m sorry but I was hella sick last week and still have a lingering cough and can’t afford to not work for two whole weeks? I’m no longer contagious, I’m asthmatic
These-Sky8931 1 points 8m ago
My manager came to work 5 days after being diagnosed covid. He didn't wear a mask that 6th day. I caught covid and was out 20 days because how sick I got( immune compromised). My manager didn't follow policy
nightimevil 1 points 8m ago
Dude, I'm dying over here being stuck at home. I'm glad my coworkers won't get sick too, but it just sucks how strict we are. Sometimes I wish I worked from home, but I like being a barista so future me can worry about that.
Jessie1605 1 points 8m ago
Well in my case my SM priorities us showing up regardless on how we are feeling was forced to stay one time for my shift even tho I have a back injury and could barely walk at times and as for colds they say as long as it’s not any COVID symptoms then we are good to work lol we are always busy with not enough staff so could imagine the reasonings to it but still prioritizing making a quick buck over your partners health Id say quite the morals they stand by
sogeking555 1 points 8m ago
Oh? Does Starbux provide paid sick days now? Do they still count against you if your not testing positive for Covid or throwing up?
Unbearablebarista 1 points 8m ago
Dude every job I’ve ever had has made me feel guilty about taking time off when I’m sick. I could be at death’s door and they’d still be upset I called out. My store is pretty good about helping find coverage, but I don’t think sick people should have to cover their own shifts. 🤔
BeardiesRule112 0 points 8m ago
Uh… you don’t have to cover your shift if you’re sick.
trouble-in-space 1 points 8m ago
By the time we closed the other day, there were four of us and I was the only one who wasn’t sick 💀
DSHOMESTUCK47 1 points 8m ago
I had a co worker just cough not even covering in a mask. Idc if you are wearing a mask STILL COUGH IN YOU’RE ELBOW
Sylvsyntax_ 1 points 8m ago
My manager has covid and like 3 other employees are sick. I had the flu two weeks ago and its just been going around. I think my whole staff has called out at least once this past month for being sick
radpandaparty 0 points 8m ago
Honestly, unless you do it once a week and clearly abuse trust, no one will be reasonably upset at you.
