do you guys have issues with openers vs closers?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by misryth
this entire week, all morning has been non stop hearing our opening SSV and one of our morning baristas talk down on our closers. like, every morning. it’s always asking why wasn’t something done or making rude remarks to our closing team.
yesterday the opening SSV made them a closing task list. when we came in this morning, she saw that prep was done but the floors hadn’t been done. She then made the comment, “no wonder there’s no cleaning done, the kids didn’t want to clean.”
our closing team is primarily 17 year old high school students. they’re good employees. and everything else was clean but the floors.
i tried saying that we shouldn’t be so hard on the closers. i was a closer for my first year at starbucks. i understand that closing can be difficult. especially with call outs or getting unexpected busy. but both the opening SSV and morning barista pull the excuse that they previously were closers and know how it should be.
i work with my SM in a few days so i plan on talking to him about how they’ve been acting. hopefully something gets done because it really ruins the mood for the morning to hear nonstop complaining.
i personally think our closers do great and i hate how much they get attacked by the morning SSV and barista.
so, to my closers: y’all are awesome. keep it up. ❤️
and to my openers: y’all are awesome. keep it up. ❤️

Yeah none of that is ok. I've done both, primarily an opener, and closing fucking sucks. My store used to be like yours, but not anymore because the old shifts left and the new shifts weren't tolerating that. Definitely talk to your manager, and don't be afraid to pull the SSVs aside and tell them that's not ok. 1. because it's just straight up rude but 2. and more importantly because they cannot be talking like that to baristas. It's their job to set the stage for the day and if they're throwing bitching and negativity around like that? It's dragging everyone else down. They should be trying to make sure everyone is in a GOOD mood. They can complain to their manager if they have such a big issue.

I would pull the SSV aside if i felt she would actually listen to me. She’s the kind of person who just doesn’t take criticism. She’s often unprofessional and will talk down about baristas and the job to the few baristas she likes. Which, for right now, is me. I have heard horror stories about how she treats people she doesn’t like and no one wants to work on her shifts. I just try to stay on her good side. We have another morning SSV who absolutely does not tolerate her attitude and behavior, but she’s on vacation because she just got married. And as soon as she left, our opening SSV got right back to being negative towards everyone. Like I said, I’m going to my SM about it because I’m fully aware this behavior is not okay. And something needs to be done. Unfortunately no one in this store really listens to me like that. So I just stay quite and take things to the SM when needed.

If not for those specific details at the end about the other ssv etc I would’ve sworn this was my store.

I am both an opening and closing ssv. I open twice a week and I close twice a week and I’m a mid shift for the other day. I see both sides.
When I was hired as a barista I was a closer. I would constantly hear all the things night crew would do poorly and feel bad, but we run two man plays after 6 ish (cafe only store) and we can only do so much. We aren’t allowed to stay late.
I moved to opening as a barista and preferred it, but also saw a lot of what night crew was doing lazily or having excuses for. Lots of leaving alt milk boxes with barely anything in it, not changing out pumps at the end of the night etc. just things that I did but didn’t realize others didn’t do. A lot of it boiled down to the closing ssv, too.
When I was promoted to ssv I chose the hybrid schedule I have now. I feel fortunate because I’ve had experiences on both sides and I advocate for both shifts quite a bit. Nights need more support, openers need better hand offs. We can work together instead of against. Things have improved a lot, but I think the biggest thing is honestly just having consistency and as a ssv making sure my baristas - both opening and closing - know what’s expected of them and giving them the time and resources to do it. I can’t expect them to make sure they do this or that if I’m off the floor and they’re unable to step away from register/bar. It’s all a balance act.

Great comment and insight here. I like this mindset and wish I saw it more often! Nobody is perfect and every day part has challenges and things they can tweak and be better about
misryth [OP]1 points8m ago
this is the kind of attitude i wish they had. there have been some days where night crew left us with absolutely nothing clean or prepped. but the things that this SSV is complaining about is minuscule. we have good opens and night crew sets us up just fine. but she’s a perfectionist and complains about everything. that’s why it’s an issue. she’s not working with the closing crew to help figure out what needs work. she complains to openers about how awful they are and how they can’t do their jobs correctly because they’re teenagers.

This is something I’d bring up to your SM. I have a lot of baristas who are under 20 and they all do their job well. Hell, I was trained by a 17 year old when I started. Age doesn’t matter. You can be 49 and lazy. I’m sorry you’re going through this, but definitely escalate it.

already planning on it. i work with my SM in two days and I’m going to sit down with him about it.

Wow we must work at the same store. I’m a closer and the openers ALWAYS leave comments in the book about what we’ve done wrong in their eyes. They are also always adding to the list of things we have to do because they don’t want to do it in the morning. The closers consistently get out at least 30 minutes after they were scheduled to leave because the opening SSV never preps or gets midday things done for the start of the closing shifts so we have to do ALL their shit, plus the closing stuff, plus the stuff they keep adding to our list. It just sucks and I’ve brought it up to the SM before but nothing happens. I even almost quit once because the morning SSV were treating me really badly and when I was talking to the SM I hadn’t named names but just mentioned that some shifts weren’t treating me well and she - favoring the morning staff - immediately scapegoated the closing shifts. I had to message her later to let her know that I wasn’t talking about the closing shifts and that it was the morning staff that treated me badly. Anyway yeah, I feel your pain lol

Dude.... I was a opener and now I'm a closer and it blows my mind how many stores have drama between the 2. We only get 30 mins to close. It's not nearly enough time. I'm like speeding through and still don't get everything going done. So many times it too busy and we can't do the floors. Opening sucks too. Plenty of times I wasn't able to get things fully done before we open. It's really sad how people don't even try to understand what their other coworkers deal with or go through.
So many immature, controlling people.

i went from closer to opener. and when i made the switch i told myself i would never get upset about the state of the store when i open because i never know what the night before was like. our closing crew is great, but we’re a high volume store and it makes sense that the store isn’t perfect before they leave. they try, and that’s perfect. we’re supposed to be a team, but some people don’t act like it.

We have two baristas that seem to think openers should do even more than they already are and if there’s even a dish in the sink (with two people working) that we have to justify it with being slammed. They also want us to start breaking down for close to make their lives easier at an incredibly early hour. Everyone else has no issues, those two closers just like avoiding doing anything.

Can I have a look at the closing task list? I will soon doing closing and I don't want to mess up!
Thank you so much!!!
misryth [OP]1 points8m ago
I’ll try to take a picture next time I work! But closing can be summarized as simply prepping, stocking and cleaning as much as you can. And don’t be afraid to ask your team what you can do to help.
miniinovaa0 points8m ago
what ur opener is saying is so rude and not okay... but if there are \*consistently\* issues with closes, that should also be addressed
if anything, why did they do prep but not clean first? imo thats just kinda gross

again none of this makes what your opener does to the closers okay, i had baristas (not even ssvs) come to me all the time, absolutely shitting on the closers, and sure they may have valid points, but it doesnt even matter cuz theyre being mean and we have no idea what experience they had the night before. n ow we use my daily a ton and we get to hear how the night before went! which is nice especially cuz sometimes i dont even see the closers ;(
misryth [OP]1 points8m ago
the only cleaning that didn’t get done was the floors behind bar. everything else cleaning wise was done. so it’s not that cleaning wasn’t done, it’s just one thing that wasn’t done. i personally never get to see the closers, but i know they do good. our opening SSV just always complains. it makes me wonder what she says to the closing SSV when she hands the floor off.
