Ok so for the baristas that work in bigger cities that have a high homeless population, how do you handle it? We have an outside cafe that’s not connected to our inside store and the local homeless people go in there all day everyday. Most of them are ok and will keep to themselves, but lately new people have been coming and a lot of fights have broken out. We call the cops but they always flee before they get there. What should we do?

So Starbucks says that we cannot turn away people who don’t make purchases. All that third place stuff. What my store does is if/when they come in to get a water or maybe drip coffee, we take their name. Once we get a name we can start connecting name to face and if they become regulars we know who they are - if they become a Problem regularly, then we can report the incident with their name. We had one person at my last store (downtown Chicago. Trust me, not good) who was actually banned by doing this and is being sued by Starbucks rn. You can ban a person if you have enough incidents with their name attached that you can bring to the DM. So that’s what we do.

That’s not a bad idea. What if they find it weird? Or like refuse to give it to us? Cause most of the time they only get water, maybe once a week drip coffee.

We just ask for a name to call for the order and ring up the water - we don’t just grab it but make sure to make a purchase of it. (Yknow pressing the cup of water button on the POS). if they don’t give a name we don’t give a water, plain and simple. :/ it’s pretty annoying but they’re usually cool about it and honestly tend to appreciate being humanized
