Im a new barista and Im getting conflicting training, could you guys help? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by anti_binary
I got trained at one location and now Im working at the next. Im getting conflicting information from everyone whos helping me at this new store and the person who previously trained me. Multiple baristas tell me something different each shift about how to make drinks, so could you guys help me out? When I look up my questions, I ALSO get conflicting information. Maybe we can find common ground in the comments.

How many shots and syrups go into **HOT** latte, cappuccino, americano and flat white? Anything else I need to remember?

How many shots and syrups go into a **COLD** latte, americano, cold brew and iced teas? How many syrups go into Frappuccino's?

And whats something you wish you knew as a new barista??

Thanks! I know its asking for a lot but it would help a ton. Im making a cheat sheet to help me out.

Yes! I keep the cheat sheet on my phone. It's saved as a link on my home screen so I can pull it up quickly.

Hot lattes:

s: 1 shot esp, 2 pumps syrup

t: 1 shot esp, 3 pumps syrup

g: 2 esp, 4 syrup

v: 2 esp, 5 syrup

americano (regardless of hot vs cold:

s: 1 esp

t: 2

g: 3

v: 4

Flat whites: always ristretto shots, always 1 more shot as compared to latte. For example, a tall FW gets 2 ristretto shots. A venti hot FW gets 3 ristretto shots. A venti iced FW gets 4 ristretto shots.

Iced lattes: exactly the same as hot, EXCEPT ventis. A venti iced latte gets 3 shots and 6 pumps of syrup

Fraps: 2/3/4. talls get 2 pumps, 2 scoops of flavoring, etc.

something I wish I knew: It's not that serious. Mistakes can be fixed, just be honest about them. AND: focus on quality & developing muscle memory. Speed comes with time.

all this but also if you’re using a syrup/sauce from hot bar on a frap, you need to use 1/2/2 pumps instead of 2/3/4.

and the match cream frap gets 2/3/4 of classic, strawberry cream frap gets 1/2/2 of classic. I remember it like cosmo and wanda.

also shaken espressos get the same number of shots as an americano, and half the number of syrup pumps so 1/2/3 pumps of syrup instead of 3/4/6 and 2/3/4 shots instead of 1/2/3 shots.

Sorry not trying to contradict but I thought shaken espressos get the same amount of syrup pumps as the regular iced drinks? So 3/4/6 fro t/g/v

nope. common mistake though. it specifically says half pumps on the drink card. your store may have half pumps on the toasted vanilla, brown sugar, and classic for this very purpose, and if they do have half pumps on them, then yes its 3/4/6. but if they have full dose pumps you have to do 1/2/3. my store doesn’t have half dose pumps on them so so many people get it wrong and do too much syrup.

We have a half pumps and that is exactly why they taught me 3/4/6!! I didn’t even process that I just go into barista mode 😭

Someone else already put the shots and stuff in, so I'm just gonna do my favorite thing in this subreddit and mention our Store Resources app. Every IPad should have one, and in there you can find so many guides to prep, reference guides for routines, all the drink recipes and more.

If you have a question, look there first because that is corporate's standards. You can't really argue with the app corporate made (and updates regularly) for baristas, to help baristas know what they want us to do. No one should ever shame you for going on there, it is a tool meant to aid us. (I was shamed a bit for using it for recipes when I was new and wasn't taught all the fraps, but they wanted me on bar. But hopefully your parents respect you more than my old ones did.)

When in doubt, look up recipes on the iPad. My store had conflicting training too, thanks to one former employee who apparently just wanted to watch the world burn. So I just referred to the iPad recipes, because they can’t argue with it.
