ASM of one here. Today my manager said sometimes managers skip their breaks? Isn’t it by law to take your break??
I’d used to work during them but heck no I stopped that.
I need my breaks and lunches.

i RARELY take my ten's, but i'll be damned if i don't make sure my baristas get them. if i stop working, it's really hard for me to pick back up my momentum. i see that as a problem, not something to pride myself on

Reminds me of my old manager who’d sit at her desk all day everyday, and then “forget” about any break that wasn’t a 30 🙄 like yeah I’m sure you don’t need to remember your break because you haven’t been standing since 5am 🥰

My SM rarely takes any breaks, which I get on her for frequently. My SM before her didn't usually take 10s (which i'm reminded aren't legally required) but usually did take her 30s. Depends on the manager I suppose!

The partner guide states that all partners are required to take all scheduled breaks.

I always encourage my SM to take her breaks, even when she’s doing admin all day. It’s good to let your brain rest from work things for a few minutes, even when it feels like you’d be better off just skipping it

Where does it say this? Starbucks policy is page 8 in the handbook and is to only follow laws and regulations. Federal law doesn’t require the employer to give any breaks. Like at all. *Most* state laws only require that breaks are offered, but don’t require the employer *force* you to take them. Some managers may claim they’re required to, but really in most instances, we just need to keep partner hours within budget so the DM doesn’t get salty.

$1, Starbucks even stated that breaks were “offered”, and that this partner chose not to take them after he made the claim that he was not given his breaks. Starbucks also asked that this partner prove the breaks were not offered in the first place.

Page 15 of the partner guide

It states “All nonexempt partners (café attendants, baristas, shift supervisors, shift managers, assistant store managers and California store managers) are required to take scheduled meal and rest breaks.”

So I guess I was slightly wrong in that SMs are not required to take their breaks and can skip them, but ASMs do have to take them and I still think SMs should

i’m a manager of a licensed store and i skip my breaks a lot simple because i don’t have time to get stuff done if i take breaks, i always take my lunches tho

It’s funny you say you used to work during them and stopped recently; while I was an SSV i took maybe 5 lunches total in my year in the role and as SM i make sure not only my team gets theirs but try to remind myself to boundaries so i’m able to have that break of zen. It’s easy to get wrapped up in working through it when you’re someone who’s striving to present the best work, so it’s taken me (still working on it) a while to actually respect my own work boundaries, especially since so much is expected of me even when i’m not actively in store.

I was a manager in 2020. My "breaks" were generally spent trying to get interviews or write the schedule. I was still working, but I got to sit down so it wasn't too bad.

For managers we get paid to complete the work. If that means working during my break so I don’t have to stay after my shift, I will work during all my breaks. For the managers who are taking crazy long breaks I feel like they are not completing the work properly, and likely taking the non coverage time from baristas as we don’t really get that much time off the floor. I’ve worked for many years and can do most tasks quickly and I still feel I need more time to complete everything we have to do.

In emergency situations like being slammed with 2-3 people, I’ll take a paid break so they can call me back if necessary. But never ever will I just not take one.

My team has to remind me to take my breaks. Otherwise I’d work through them too. If you’re an asm and in training I would absolutely still take all of your breaks. It can be a hard habit to break if you start now

No ssvs at more store take their breaks. We don't have the coverage. Most of the time we work through our lunches as well.

I’m pretty sure you’re allowed to skip you’re breaks if you want to (not sure why you would) — you just can’t be forced or compelled to do so.

I know my manager if it’s super busy or if we’re down a partner will sometimes ‘skip’ her break during scheduled coverage. If she has non-coverage later in her shift she’ll usually just clock out for her lunch once her coverage is over

i’m an SM and i rarely take breaks. my store is low volume and we are only on 2 man deployment. sometimes i have to spend time in the back actioning emails or doing rotas etc so i feel bad spending even more time off shift to take a break 😕

we had a temporary store manager once, working alongside our normal one. my normal manager often tried to convince me to start asm development, which i was always adamantly against. temp manager made a joke one day that he viewed his breaks as “extra admin time” or something similar. that got a big “yeah that’s why i don’t wanna be one” from me.

I sometimes skip My break if it’s insanely busy. But it’s not illegal, you must provide a break for those working 6 hours plus or more.. and if they say no that’s on them, but it’s not illegal, sometimes my co workers rather skip their breaks as they say they feel lazy after

Breaks aren't required in my state whatsoever, whether you work at Starbucks or anywhere else, unless you require breaks due to a disability. It sucks.

I’m a manager but a minor, and yeah no as soon as I started fully being a manager my breaks took a vacation and I barely am able to get a 15 minute in and work 6 days & long hours to cover all my lazy adult ass coworkers 🫠
