Small green bean questions!!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Master-Persimmon5539
I joined this sub when I started applying for Starbucks jobs, and just passed interviews/background check and I start on Monday! I’m super excited - I’ve been reading all of the green bean advice posts on here! I have 2 questions I’m hoping for some advice on:
1) Do I need to bring anything to my first day of training? It sounds like (from posts on here) I’ll be doing a lot of online training modules. Do I need to bring my own computer for that?
2) Is it common to have an 8-hour shift early on? My first shift is 4 hours, then my second shift the next day is 8 hours. Is this normal?
I know I can do this, I just want to be as prepared as possible! Lol

1. No need, they will provide you with an iPad usually. 2. That's normal

I’d bring a little notepad you can keep in your apron to take notes. My manager actually gave me one my first day but I don’t know if that’s common. You won’t have to bring anything else tho. Working full time shifts when you first start out is normal. That’s what happened to me, and I think it was more for training than anything. Anyway, you’re probably gonna feel super overwhelmed at first, but just remember a lot of this stuff is gonna come with time. They won’t expect you to remember everything right off the bat, so give yourself some wiggle room and try not to stress too much. Good luck and have fun! :)

Your training modules will be done on a store PC or iPad, and there’s way to access those resources on a personal device anyway
Generally you can be scheduled any amount of time from 4-8 hours so that’s normal
There’s a lot to memorize and I don’t recommend stressing over it, especially when you’re off the clock, because *everyone* takes time to learn everything, but lots of people find it helpful to bring a small notebook that fits in an apron pocket.

If you want to study in advance, go through the subR and search
Even if you could just get a head start wrapping your head around the different cup sizes and the syrup pumps/espresso shot count , it will help keep you less blindsided. There's a ton of threads on posts of "I'm starting Monday what do I need to know" or GBs overwhelmed and trying to confirm the numbers .
Here is a great trainer tip comment I think is really valuable about using your hand to remember.
Edit 2: standard builds but don't try to memorize like that. Memorize the common shots/pumps snd then memorize exceptions https://imgur.com/a/fA9cgZO

i just recite ‘short short tall grande venti iced venti trenta’ while i’m pumping syrups it’s way easier than the other way you linked

That works. I like the use of the Vulcan sign. Also, shots I saw someone say to by syllables: short tall have one syllable one shot. Grande venti two and two. If you rush iced into "ice venti " that's 3
