tiktok barista hate (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by addiesucks
anybody else notice that when a starbucks barista posts about not liking an aspect of the job, the majority of the comments are just like “sb baristas when they have to do their job” or telling them to work somewhere else then? i feel like i never see other people complaining about their jobs get as much pushback. i get a lot of these vids on my fyp so i’m seeing a common theme and wanted to know if anyone else has seen this.
mangotangoafterdark 312 points 8m ago
yes i could be like “a customer screamed at me, threatened to kill my family and threw a hot coffee at me” and people would be like “omg starbucks baristas always complaining😒🙄”
darkwolf523 8 points 8m ago
Bruh. You ok? 😭
heyitsmaria24 300 points 8m ago
I remember replying to those people, “But then you all get mad when we do our jobs and follow policy, so your tiktok hacks to get a cheaper drink don’t work” 😂

True

To most people, being a barista is "push button, make coffee" so the idea that a Starbucks employee could be overworked, overstressed, and god forbid, underpaid?! Preposterous.

What they don't realise is the 30-40 second drive times, plus pressure to connect, plus the steep learning curve of the job, plus the verbal attacks (and sometimes physical attacks) from customers, PLUS sometimes the verbal attacks from coworkers! It all piles on and can get pretty nasty, even with a supportive SM.

The whole concept of "unskilled labour" is pretty rampant, and I guess fast food is "unskilled" so employees are therefore not allowed to be unhappy. They know what they signed up for, and are capable of leaving if they wanted.

You know, all ignoring the current state of the economy and job market, living situations, and commute/accessibility issues. Plus the mental health crisis in the world right now.

TLDR they're ignorant and will never see otherwise until they're literally in the same position

The thing I never understood is that we as baristas are basically bartenders with generally more steps when it comes to making drinks. Now I’m not shitting on bartenders. But I know people that would be paying the same for some alcoholic drink they can easily make at home and tipping 5 bucks a drink. Then when asked why they don’t tip a barista I’ve gotten the answer “they just make coffee”. Like…you think the bartender is back there distilling the alcohol and everything?
There’s definitely a massive disconnect between what the customer perceives and what the job actually entails. And Starbucks as a company is 100% to blame for that as well with how they present their employees.
diphenhydranautical 29 points 8m ago
i honestly never even thought about the bartender comparison but that’s a really good point
mrcupcake18 17 points 8m ago
Dude omg last night my coworkers and I were literally comparing ourselves to bartenders in a way! Never thought about it either but I do get the comparison
kaynist 6 points 8m ago
allegedly bars love hiring ex baristas cus of our work experience being so relavent to bartending
goddessathena1111 26 points 8m ago
I literally make $15 an hour and work 20-24 hours a week. People buy one $10 drink I make what about 50 in an hour give or take. On top of knowing that on average most people who go and buy coffee from SB have coffee at their disposal at home but choose to come to us to make it and then treat us like shit because they take a simple drink and add 50 million things to it and get mad that one thing wasn’t done correctly 🙃
fruit_enjoyer 11 points 8m ago
Even if making coffee was as simple as they say it is, they’re in the store for maybe 5 minutes, they see like 2% of the work we do to maintain the store. It pisses me off when people are like “you just poured the coffee!” Yeah i also cleaned the espresso machines, scraped the ovens, rinsed the ice bins, and mopped the floors so that the store you’re standing in isn’t full of dirt and mold, and the drink you’re drinking isn’t full of bacteria, and the food you’re eating isn’t covered in grease and burnt food crumbs! Not to mention the 100 drinks other than theirs ive made that day.
crowhusband 113 points 8m ago
sometimes i wonder if they say that, because they feel specifically called out by the posts making fun of shitty customers 🫣🫣🫣
smexy_rat07 59 points 8m ago
People need to chill like everyone complain about their job from time to time😭😭😭 I feel like a lot of them feel personally called out by the complaint so they get defensive and annoyed🤷‍♀️
yvesagain 31 points 8m ago
This is exactly why, people don't want to feel guilty getting their frappucino with 6+ modification, because if they felt guilty they'd have to change their behavior. And they just aren't willing to give it up.
JunipherStar 21 points 8m ago
Exactly, my fyp has a bunch of different people that complain (usually it’s in a joking way too) about all different jobs but baristas are the only ones that get dog piled with negativity.
NeonCloudAstro 21 points 8m ago
it’s because they want to keep treating us like we’re machines and not actual human beings with feelings
diphenhydranautical 20 points 8m ago
it pisses me off because i work my ASS off between two jobs, shitty hours, hardly sleeping/eating/taking care of my house, and barely paying the bills … i love what i do at both of my jobs but *god forbid* i dislike one small part of it. i commented about tiktok drinks not being a big deal until it’s sunday peak and there are 25 cranky customers in the cafe staring at you running late for church and waiting on their 3 heavily modified frappuccinos and someone said “just don’t let them bother you? it’s not that big of a deal just do the job you were literally hired for” like *?????* i don’t get paid enough to get verbally sharted on by rich old white ladies with the attitude of satan’s firstborn. i do my job, and love my craft, but if i’m spending 30 hours a week around nasty bitter people who tell me im bad at my job, it’s going to fucking get to me after a while 😐
badatlife15 15 points 8m ago
Ugh yes, I saw a customer talking about how they felt bad for ending a pay it forward chain and a bunch of people were telling her she shouldn’t feel bad and it makes it harder for the baristas. I was commenting bc someone said something about baristas just being lazy. I’m like it’s not us being lazy, we’re still doing our job, it just makes it more difficult especially if it’s a green bean on the window and let’s face it (at least at my store & a lot of posts here) that’s often where they get put. But this person commenting of course pulled the “I used to be a barista.” Like sure you did and I’m sure you never complained about anything.
bat-pal 18 points 8m ago
i fucking cant stand chains. why cant they just tip us as their "good deed" instead?? they seem sooo proud of themselves when they ask too. like youre willing to spend like 20$+ more on people who obviously are at starbucks bc they have money to afford it, but then dont even tip US, the people doing you a service, a single cent. 🙄
thechamelioncircuit 14 points 8m ago
It’s because our customer base is so fucking entitled. We’re not people to them; just drink machines.
xXRose_WaveXx 12 points 8m ago
people think it’s as easy as finding a new job. it’s not. a lot of people work these jobs to get themselves through college so people saying oh if you got a college degree you wouldn’t have to work here. bitch im trying!!! and it’s also not just for high schoolers. if it was we wouldn’t be open at 5 am would we?? you can tell you has never had to work a day in their life and the people who were privileged enough to not have to work as a teenager or through college. they will never change.
satisfiedjelly 11 points 8m ago
I’m gonna complain as much as I want. We already have it tougher at Starbucks just based on people treating us like fast food employees instead of baristas anyways
pastelldillann 10 points 8m ago
I swear to god we’re the only people on the planet not allowed to complain about our jobs
happypoptart0 7 points 8m ago
IM SAYING! I literally was taking about this at work recently. So we aren’t allowed to complain about our jobs like literally everyone else in the workforce?!? Make it make sense?!?! It gets me a little heated bc what makes us different? Why aren’t we allowed to complain but you at your 9 to 5 are ?! We literally work for a company that constantly rewards entitlement and because of that the baristas behind the bar get treated like shit on a regular basis, I can complain if I want to
lilkiosk 6 points 8m ago
I see it all the time on Instagram. My explore page is filled with Starbucks related things and it seems all the comments if anyone complains ever is like “who cares if they complain about *insert literally any modification ever* it’s their job they get paid to do it if they don’t like it they can work elsewhere.” Or “Starbucks baristas will complain about doing literally anything so do what you want” like thx so much. I will complain about you coming to my store and ordering the Fortnite dance frappuccino because wtf is that and then you get rude about me not knowing your made up monstrosity. Customers are so entitled it’s insane and it’s always viewed as an attitude problem on our part when it’s not us at all. I guarantee if you went into Susan’s office job and had her do a part of her job that was technically something she was paid for but certainly not enjoyable, you’d hear Susan complain about it. But no one would tell Susan that she should just find another job.
cutiepie9ccr 6 points 8m ago
saying this as someone who is on there daily and has a moderately large following, tiktok is a cesspool of people who lack empathy. take those hate comments as a grain of salt bc once one person comes up with a negative point of view, 80% of the people on there adopt it as their personality
darkwolf523 5 points 8m ago
Fuck them. I’m still charging them the right price for it. Aren’t going to be cheaper with me
QueenOfTypos337 4 points 8m ago
its usually people who dont like being joked about. sbux customers order the most ridiculous stuff and throw fits when baristas make even the most light hearted jokes.
ramieelle 3 points 8m ago
My thing is like the majority of us hate some aspects of the job. So if all of us left, who do they think is gonna be there to make their drinks? They act like people can't dislike a job that pays so little while being physically and mentally taxing.
kaynist 3 points 8m ago
i think the issue is that we're so visible online especially with all the unionizing, so rather than sympathizing with us theyre siding with corporate. they see us airing grievances so much they just think "these lazy baristas just dont want to work" even tho its so much more complex than that. its absolute bs
strawbrryshrtcke 3 points 8m ago
right like😭 everyone complains about their job but when sb baristas do it it's suddenly wrong
fruit_enjoyer 2 points 8m ago
No ive got the same content recently, and i dont even have tiktok. Especially people being extremely negative towards tipping (anywhere, but specifically starbucks)
misterkevinoh 2 points 8m ago
That’s because baristas are… different in the food service world. You’re viewed differently from line cooks or bartenders, and it’s not the same as waiters or even non bux baristas. Sbux baristas have the ability to summon the most base vitriol from people when really they’re a harmless bunch. Non bux baristas are fucking trash though and I hate all of them (I used to formerly manage a cafe).
Hazel_is_Trans 1 points 8m ago
Only aspect of the job I don't like is not having time to connect make quality drinks (not fast) overall guest experiences better
borrowedurmumsvcard -4 points 8m ago
I do understand because I do see posts that are like “I HATE MAKING COLD FOAM OMG IF YOU GET COLD FOAM ON EVERYTHING FUCK YOU I HOPE YOUR FAMILY DIES AND TOU HAVE TO WATCH”

edit: pls read my response before downvoting
addiesucks [OP] 2 points 8m ago
but that’s very exaggerated, and it’s unrelated to barista posts that aren’t even a quarter that bad getting hate. i don’t think you should see someone post like that and assume that all baristas think that way or justify your hate towards them because of the small minority that thinks like that.
borrowedurmumsvcard 0 points 8m ago
i’m not saying it’s justified at all. all I am saying is that the types of baristas that complain about tiny things have created the stereotype that starbucks baristas are all bitchy whiners who hate their job, and that one of the reasons we get the hate sometimes. I completely agree with this post however, I do see a lot of baristas complaining about nothing which gives us a bad rap.

I definitely am not trying to argue and you and everyone in these comments are absolutely valid. I was simply trying to add some more context. definitely not trying to argue or anything :)
