How do you guys make small talk(self.starbucksbaristas)

Do you guys have any tips for making small talk with customers and just getting to know them? I’m about to be a shift and I feel like this is something I need to work on.

“So does the thought of your eventual death comfort or scare you?”

I always ask about their day and weekend/week plans! Or compliment their nails, hair, etc. Especially with men I ask about their work life or kids, both usually sprout pretty good conversations!!

This everytime my favorite movie on Dt is to take2 secs and complement them about something 9/10 it will open the conversation

Be Genuine. Be Friendly. Be Fearless.
There are no rules outside of maintaining professionalism. If they want to chat, they will. If they don't, they don't.
Usually on DT, I take the lead and talk about whatever I want. Today, after the chaos subsided, my topic for the day was the shape of the clouds. The weather was nice.
One potential tip to go beyond "how was your day?"... Astrology is a goldmine I've dug into consistently since I started. I read my horoscope for the day, add some dramatic wrinkles, and voila. Next thing you know, you're in conversation about Zodiac signs, fire energies, etc. I know very little about it and knew nothing before.

Compliments, SSV here and I enjoy connecting. One thing I like doing is compliment and adding to my part (Customer orders brown sugar shaken espresso) Me: Brown sugar espresso, first time or frequent buyer for that one Customer: I get it all the time M: Awesome, great choice what is it the brown sugar? You like oatmilk? Or you like some really strong shots of coffee? Depending what the customer answers you got three different routes you can go, recommend something with oatmilk, a similar flavor, or I always ask if they’d tried something similar to the drink. Or recommend they try the drink with different ingredients. They are usually first to think about similar drink so I usually recommend something I’ve concocted and it’s easy to make conversation once they get curious and you answer questions they have from there.

If I'm feeling anxious about conversation with someone, I'll ask a fun Convo starter question. Some of my go to would be "have you seen any good concerts?" Or "do you know any good jokes?".
I also rely on good ol favorites though like "any fun plans this weekend" or "what're you going dressed as for Halloween?"
People love talking about themselves so give them a chance to and it'll work out

I’ve always been an extrovert so it’s not hard for me, but when I’m feeling less than social I just think “I could be the only person to smile and be friendly to them today, they could need this.” It might be dumb because we’re just making coffee but I don’t know. I just try to pick something I genuinely like, like an older woman who was wearing powder blue. I told her that was definitely her color and I loved it on her. She came back a week later and said she got more in that shade. As she should. If it’s someone who I don’t have anything I genuinely love or if it feels cheesy or not appropriate, I just ask how they are and if they have any plans that day.
I have a slower store, if you can’t tell.

I’m just a green bean so I don’t know any better but something that helps me is noticing a ‘special’ detail about the customer and complimenting them on it or simply asking them what their plans are for the day sparks simply yet fun convo!

ask about their day, if they have any plans, if they’re heading to work etc. also compliments usually always work and make people smile!
