Bodily function clean-up? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rawrgeneration
I am an SSV at a store which seems to have a lot of customer "accidents". My last SM left a bathroom closed for days waiting for a barista to volunteer to clean it and seemed frustrated when I called the biohazard team to clean it up and they were done within a couple hours of me making the ticket.
Yesterday, a similar incident occurred and our new SM who just got out of training expected someone to clean it also.

Is it expected of us to clean large amounts of human excrement? What is the purpose of the biohazard ticket if so?

anything bloody is automatically calling biohazard

Any amount of vomit/diarrhea is biohazard

“Small” amounts of feces, urine, etc are technically expected to be cleaned by someone in store, but you are always allowed to refuse a task that makes you uncomfortable

a few weeks ago our store had someone shit in the bathroom sink and i think about that a lot

at my old store someone shit in the urinal. I remember I was in the back doing dishes and the SSV came back and looked at me and was like “someone just told me someone shit in a urinal” and then she told our manager and we were
all just kinda standing there processing lol. we ended up closing early for it to be cleaned.

I think it’s somewhat up to the SM/DM to decide the appropriate cut-off line, but if the specimen is larger than a dollar bill then absolutely call that in. I think I remember hearing my various SMs say anything between a quarter and dollar-sized amount is what we’re expected to clean.

You can decline to clean, even if the sm does ask an employee to do it. It’s in the training. You can’t get in trouble for refusing a dangerous task. Contact the district manager or Starbucks advocates /benefits center if the problem persists.
Ps: I’m pretty sure it was anything larger than a dime… But I’d double check. Either way, if you’re uncomfortable with it, don’t do it.

Yes. This is also a good point—you can always decline.

If they don’t like it then they can be the ones to clean it. They make a lot more than a barista so if it’s not a “biohazard” then they can get off their lazy ass and not hide on the computer all day.

Any amount is a biohazard. If you're uncomfortable with cleaning it up and you're 'forced' to do it, contact your DM because that is an OSHA violation. You have the right to refuse unsafe work for yourself and others.

If your SM isn't willing to do it, why do they expect a barista to volunteer to do it?
MiaLedger 5 points 8m ago
For starters, you can decline any task that makes you feel unsafe, so go right ahead and call biohazard if you don't feel good about cleaning up someone's dump.

Also, I thought in training we were told feces is a biohazard.

I don’t work for Sbux anymore, but when I did, my store had a similar problem.

Call the biohazard people. You are not trained or equipped to deal with large amounts of human excrement. If your SM wants to avoid the charge, they can clean it—it’s not on you.

I don’t get paid enough to clean that up nor will I be getting the “training” to clean it up either

Ten years ago, baristas (I definitely have) did need to clean it. Now? No.

Heck no! I cleaned the bathroom once during a closing shift and someone exploded in there a few minutes. I told my ssv I was never cleaning the loos again and I was never asked to again.

Any time I see any sort of bodily fluid or substance, IMMEDIATELY calling biohazard. I’m not dealing with that, that’s above my pay grade.

Nope. Immediately nope. A little pee on the toilet seat, whatever. Doodoo on the floor, walls, blood, vomit, draw a line. We have people that are literally contracted to properly clean it with the right chemicals. You can create a ticket on the iPad. Don't clean it.

This. I don’t care how silly it seems to call someone for a turd on the floor- I’m not touching it with a 10ft pole. A little bit of pee, whatever. I’ll probably burn my clothes after work but that’s fine. But I draw the line at blood, vomit and other solids
