This type of interaction pisses me off (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by yayannapav
Customer: I’ll have a tall pike.
Me: Would you like any cream or sugar in that?
Customer: Yes.

Am I supposed to automatically know what type/how much sugar they want? And how much cream?? I can’t read your mind.
Responsible_Snow7109 246 points 8m ago
Lolol one time a guy got his drink and then a few moments later, he asked me (on bar) "can i get a sugar?" So i grab a sugar packet and come to him and hand it out to him and he says "no i want the brown raw sugar" so i went to grab one of those and try to give it to him. Then he said "can i get 4 of them?" ...😑
yayannapav [OP] 92 points 8m ago
UGH THATS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE TOO
Responsible_Snow7109 48 points 8m ago
Lol first he said "can i get A sugar" so i gave him A sugar packet and then after that he decides to tell me the type of sugar he wants. Lol then i grab it but then he tells me the amount? Lol couldnt he have fit all 3 or atleast 2 outta 3 of those specifications from the start??? Lol 😭 what the hell
yayannapav [OP] 57 points 8m ago
HOW HARD IS IT TO SAY “EXCUSE ME, MAY I PLEASE HAVE 4 RAW SUGARS” ???? LMFAOO
Responsible_Snow7109 10 points 8m ago
Lmao idk but apparently some others need to be asked tho before u find out how many they need 😄
yayannapav [OP] 11 points 8m ago
like it takes more effort to NOT specify what he wants exactly
Responsible_Snow7109 9 points 8m ago
Yepp lol cuz then he says more words and hes waiting there longer. Like each time i went to go hand him the sugars, i kept turning away real fast cuz i was drowning in drinks and i would think i can get back to my drinks only to just touch a steaming pitcher and hear more specifications that he didnt state before that lol
WateredDownLemonade 11 points 8m ago
JAIL. Those ppl are my least favorite 😭 at this point i just grab a handful and give it to people when they ask. If they want a specific number i eyeball to see if its enough but usually i give people more bc i don't pay for them and they are free 🫡
Responsible_Snow7109 3 points 8m ago
Yea im about to just do that too but I'll grab like an absurd amount of sugars and that way when theyre weirded out, they can see that its silly for them not to tell us how many they need lol
dnims24 8 points 8m ago
Or when at reg they say no sugar and then at bar they’re like can I get 12 sugar packets 😭
Responsible_Snow7109 2 points 8m ago
Lmao stop. I am going to calmly take off my apron. Fold it in a nice bow. Put it on the end of the counter where the safe is across from warming and then i will leave ☺️
dnims24 5 points 8m ago
Put the apron inside the oven and just leave. Burn everything to the ground
Responsible_Snow7109 2 points 8m ago
The only right solution ☺️
Water-is-h2o 6 points 8m ago
That’s when you walk back and forth and hand them one at a time
Responsible_Snow7109 1 points 8m ago
Lol then he would probably be like *touché* 😄
Green_barista_front 6 points 8m ago
I got to the point to me asking “How many sugars.”
Responsible_Snow7109 3 points 8m ago
I ask that for literally everything now lol but sometimes they dont say it at the register and then they ask me on bar. But why should we have to ask them what they want in their drinks or how many/much of something they want? Theyre the ones ordering it for themselves so they should tell us how they want it. Ive become so accustomed tho to asking them as well. But sometimes its out of my control and then theyll ask me on bar outta nowhere and then i have to play 21 questions with them
lilkiosk 5 points 8m ago
I had this happen with some guy in cafe who was like “can I have 8 sugars?” And I was on drive bar so not really my problem but of course I said sure and grabbed them for him and I handed them to him and he looked disgusted and was like “I want 8 BROWN sugars”… if we started there, that would have been greattttt
Responsible_Snow7109 5 points 8m ago
Right lmao he obviously knew in his head that the brown sugars exist at starbucks and he obviously knew thats what he wanted. So why couldnt he speak that to begin with instead of having a smugness about his response? Lol people act up when they come into a starbucks
mama_bibi 1 points 8m ago
This is when in a very cheary passive aggressive voice you treat them like a child and say "oh well why didn't you say so silly " *then insert giggle* and roll your eyes as you grab the sugar

Edit spelling...again
Ordinary-Theory-8289 4 points 8m ago
Yeah I always ask now. They almost always want the raw sugar but god forbid they say that. And I don’t even ask how many. You’re getting a handful and you can figure it out
Responsible_Snow7109 3 points 8m ago
It just sucks some times because when its busy and rush/peak, our minds are going a mile a minute and we already have to remember to ask people if they want their drinks hot or iced and what size and if they want cream or want it sweetened etc... So its like amidst chaos and trying to do a ton at once, we have to also ask how many sugars. Lol if we didnt ask half that shit, there would be way more remakes than there already is
swallowingpixies 2 points 8m ago
That happens to me every day
Responsible_Snow7109 1 points 8m ago
Oh i believe it lol
evenlyroasted 166 points 8m ago
or when they say “one cream” like bro we don’t have the little cup things i’m begging you
Callesandra 82 points 8m ago
If they say one cream I put in Lt cream. I do regular cream for 2-3 and 4 or more is extra
dnims24 23 points 8m ago
I have so many customers that are like 5 creams and I’m like carol we’re not a hotel with the little cups of cream. Most of them are really nice when I (politely) tell them we just have a milk gallon but it’s annoying how many times in a day I let them know
shutupsav 6 points 8m ago
my old SM once said to a customer, “could you imagine if we had to stand here and open a million tiny creams all day? that wouldn’t work out very well.”
dontcry2022 6 points 8m ago
I just let them tell me that, put half and half in their order, and as I'm making their coffee, I fill it up to where I normally would for cream and I say "oh btw, we don't have the little packs of cream. Does this look like enough room for me to add some?"
sheep_heavenly 3 points 8m ago
It's a tablespoon per little cup, give or take, or approximately what most people do as a splash. It's not precise but at least it's a starting point.
Midieval -11 points 8m ago
So basically there’s a problem if they know how much cream they want, or if they don’t.

Any other coffee joint knows what to put in the cup if you say “two cream”
ourgodwhofucks 9 points 8m ago
then go to any other coffee joint
Midieval -20 points 8m ago

insertusernameplease 4 points 8m ago
Sorry that we don’t measure out single creams at other places so that we can measure your cream pours 🙄
GinasteraBabe 47 points 8m ago
Or the fact that we haven't had sugars and cream out on the condiment bar for nearly 3 years at this point and still don't realize half the time? No that's not gonna be changing anytime soon 🙄
Ordinary-Theory-8289 23 points 8m ago
I like when they try to helpfully point it out. “Hey! Your guys condiment station is empty, might wanna refill that!” Or in my state we’re not allowed to keep straws out, they need to be requested. So often they’re like “you guys should just keep them out on the counter!” No, you should just use your fucking words and ask for what you want. It’s not unique to Starbucks here, if you go to McDonald’s, Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts, literally any where you’re gonna have to ask for the straw as they’re not out in the counter or they’re risking a fine
yirium 1 points 8m ago
This is such a weird law
lightswitchcat 45 points 8m ago
It might be silly but it really bugs me when the say " I'll take a tall pike, BLACK, with medium cream and medium sugar." There's a regular who comes in and asks for this and I've tried to let him know that the way he orders is stupid but he still does this everyday without fail.
yayannapav [OP] 20 points 8m ago
I find it kinda funny tbh. I love how smug people are despite being so stupid. It’s reminds me of this regular that orders a “venti nonfat tai chi latte” and I’ve corrected him before, letting know that it’s chai tea…he refuses to listen and still calls it tai chi. The customers always think they’re right.
lightswitchcat 9 points 8m ago
I have another regular who always gets venti iced caramel "machinata" and all of us have told him it's macchiato but he thinks WE'RE wrong lol
yayannapav [OP] 4 points 8m ago
Man I could go on for days talking about stupid things regulars do- but here’s one last story from me. We have a regular that gets a grenat cold brew “NO CLASSIC SYRUP”. We’ve told him it doesn’t come with classic. But he always specifies. I’m starting to wonder if they’re doing this on purpose to drive us insane
franglaisedbeignet 1 points 8m ago
Just do something like a tae bow move to startle him with a loud grunt
Brgnbo 31 points 8m ago
I’ve had a lot of people recently on drive thru just like not finish their drink order. They’d be like “can I get a venti vanilla” and as soon as I’m about to ask wtf it is they’ll be like “ICED” AN ICED WHAT A VANILLA WHAT!!!! LATTE? ICED COFFEE???? VANILLA COLD BREW??? PLEASE FINISH YIUR SENTENCE.
franglaisedbeignet 20 points 8m ago
Put petite vanilla scones and ice in a venti cup.
Brgnbo 2 points 8m ago
As I should
Callesandra 29 points 8m ago
I have a few customers who will pull up the speaker box and say "I'll have a venti iced french vanilla" and *every* time I or my partner has to ask... is that a french vanilla latte or an iced coffee... or what? Tell me which drink you want lady. Though I suppose I should be glad that she at least tells me size and iced.
yayannapav [OP] 26 points 8m ago
That’s how I feel when people will say “can I get a brown sugar?” Or “can I get a vanilla bean?”…i mean I can use my context clues and figure out what they want, but like…finish the sentence.
pickled_goblin 4 points 8m ago
“can I get a vanilla bean” makes me scream internally. like, saying that extra word is not going to kill you.
EggForLife69 12 points 8m ago
See but vanilla bean is at least somewhat understandable, as the frappes are the only standard drinks to use it
ocinlas 1 points 8m ago
If they don’t specify a size first, they might mean scone.
Agreeable-Ad7225 22 points 8m ago
What I can’t stand the most is when I ask do you want cream or sugar and they say no thank you then at the window they go there as supposed to be cream in this 🤨
broe071 13 points 8m ago
Or the classic "can I get a black coffee with extra cream and 4 sugars"
Agreeable-Ad7225 4 points 8m ago
Makes me all eye twitchy
mrcupcake18 10 points 8m ago
Or when they say “regular” like no I’m not playing this game, make a choice 😂
aee78 4 points 8m ago
You want it black no sugar, cause that's the Starbucks standard of regular.
Most the time they want it Dunk's way which is with ton of sugar and half&half.
aee78 8 points 8m ago
People are especially dump before they're caffeinated. We have regulars that come in mutiple times a day and half of them can barely communicate for their first drink, but are super pleasant and chatty their other daily visits.
franglaisedbeignet 3 points 8m ago
Yes they get smarter when they get that dump out of the way
hauxbi 8 points 8m ago
If they don’t specify, most of the time they’re the kind of chill people who are okay with anything you put in there. For me i usually go with one sugar and 1/2 inch of cream and if they want more of anything they can ask me later!
yayannapav [OP] 5 points 8m ago
I will usually follow up with “what kind of sugar, how much cream, etc.” and in my experience they almost always have a very specific order that they want :(
franglaisedbeignet 7 points 8m ago
Today someone ordered a coconut. A what?? A coconut bar. Huh? I was gone this summer I guess when this pastry was introduced and I never see them here…my co-partner said oh he means the coconut lime bar.
yayannapav [OP] 3 points 8m ago
Oh, you didn’t know that we now sell coconuts at Starbucks?!
capsule_of_anxiety1 6 points 8m ago
Or when I ask them if they want cream and sugar and they refuse to answer with yes or no so they just keep repeating “I want a coffee” with a snarky tone

BUT LIKE HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR COFFEE
Alefur 6 points 8m ago
At work, running on very very little sleep, some kid's ordering through drivethru earlier, wants a Venti Strawberry Acai, I ask "Would you like that made with Water or Lemonade?"
Them: "Yes"
Me, lack of sleep and utter exhaustion catching up to me: "What"
Water-is-h2o 6 points 8m ago
The other day someone asked “how much is a trenta?” with no further context
lillyloveswriting 6 points 8m ago
One time I made a guy his pike three times. In the first interaction I asked if he wanted cream and sugar and he specified how much cream he wanted and 5 raw sugars. So I went ahead and made the coffee for him. When I brought to him the first time he asked if I had put in the sugar and I responded, “yes, did you want more?” And he was like, “why would you put it in?” Very angrily and so I did it again, and only left the cream this time. So I bring it back to him and he goes, “where’s the cream?” And I said, “oh I put it in”, still trying to keep my patience together. And then he blows up and tells me why I put it in when he could’ve done it himself. I looked at him straight in the face and said, “Sir, you never told me that you didn’t want it inside. I will HAPPILY make it for you for the third time correctly, I apologize for the miscommunication.” But I went to the back instead and had someone take over for me while I broke down 🥲
Ashesremindme 3 points 8m ago
I have a pike regular and I swear she comes through because she likes getting pissed off more than she likes coffee. She gets it with light cream, but every single time she complains that it's "ice cold." I've offered to give her the cream on the side, but she wants us to do it. I've offered to steam the cream so it doesn't lower the temperature, but she doesn't want that either. And she gives the "cold" one back so she isn't trying to get more for free. I think she just likes complaining.
yayannapav [OP] 3 points 8m ago
I love how understanding people are when there’s a miscommunication 😍🤪 but fr do people not realize we can’t read their minds??
Poptart0911 6 points 8m ago
I just put what I consider a normal amount and remake it if they complain lol
yayannapav [OP] 5 points 8m ago
That’s kinda iconic lol. Then at least they might learn to specify next time
FemboiTomboy 1 points 8m ago
it is the only way. they're obv not picky about it, so they never complain
Ordinary-Theory-8289 3 points 8m ago
Yup. 2 sugars and cream you got it
Ordinary-Theory-8289 3 points 8m ago
Yup. 2 sugars and cream you got it out
sushibroni 5 points 8m ago
someone today got an iced coffee and when i handed it out to her she was like “why is there no cream? do i have to ask for it now?” like genuinely thought she didnt have to ask for it 😭
Tarbucks0899 5 points 8m ago
Oh my favorite! Can I have a black coffee but with cream like um….. who’s gunna tell them
rtsneedshelp 4 points 8m ago
Drives me up the wall. If it’s slammed I’ll let them know we do the cream and that the sugar bar is over there. If it’s not busy or they get huffy I’ll ask how many they want. Just use your words ffs.
apancrazio38034 3 points 8m ago
Some lady the other day “can I get a decaf” and I was like “…decaf what?” And she was real mad I didn’t know she meant “a coffee?” 🙄 and then was mad that we don’t brew decaf at our store
Icky138 1 points 8m ago
why does my store make me do a decaf pour over for anyone who wants decaf drip. every single time they complain it too to long, even when i tell them it’s a faster process through an espresso drink.
apancrazio38034 1 points 8m ago
That’s what we have to do, and then she said “ no americanos have too much water. “ like wut
ShamFreakingWow 3 points 8m ago
It doesn’t take that much more effort to just ask after that, “how much would you like?”
yayannapav [OP] 3 points 8m ago
I do ask. But I feel like it should be pretty obvious to them to specify when I ask the first question. It’s not that deep, just an annoyance of mine
ShamFreakingWow 1 points 8m ago
Most people aren’t present in most moments of the day. Especially those that are addicted to coffee and haven’t had any yet (which are the majority of Starbucks customers). I think focusing on the absent mindedness of customers will only lead to a more stressful experience during our shifts. It’s beneficial to all involved the less weight we give to the flaws of our customers.
Ok_Struggle8876 2 points 8m ago
"I need a regular coffee." Like first off, demanding, second what size, what roast, and do you want it black? Sorry this isn't McDonald's 😂
mama_bibi 2 points 8m ago
At least they said yes. The worse is when they say no and then ask for it after you give them the black coffee they just asked for
0atmilk_l0ver 2 points 8m ago
That’s your cue “Okay sounds good, how much (or what kind of) cream & sugar would you like?” Tbh I feel like that’s just part of your job. #customerconnections ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
yayannapav [OP] 2 points 8m ago
I never said I don’t ask…I do. It just bugs me when people expect me to know what they want automatically.
0atmilk_l0ver 1 points 8m ago
Idk I personally don’t see an issue in it bc it gives me time to enter pike then switch to cream “what kind of cream can I get you? Is a splash okay?” then switch to the sugar button “and what sugar would you like? how much?”
giftwrapartist 2 points 8m ago
My favorite is when I ask that question, they say no, then come back and ask where the cream is.
Voxxyvoo 2 points 8m ago
use it to drive up customer connection scores. "mhmm, and how much cream? how many sugars?" or at least to *look like* you're doing customer connections. keeps the DMs at bay
VictorianLibra22 2 points 8m ago
There's a standard for cream ('regular' is a half inch, light is quarter inch, I believe. In the midwestern United States, at least) and your options for the sugar would be to either A. ask them how many they want, or B. do what stores in my area do - add sugar packets in the same numbers as syrup pumps. IE tall pike with cream and sugar? 3 sugar packets, regular cream amount. and so on. Seems to simplify and create a consistent experience IMO
Maleficent-Boat3671 2 points 8m ago
What I like to do is ask how many sugars and how much cream they would like, and that usually gives me a good estimate of how much to put in there. It can be annoying tho 😫
th3_thing 2 points 8m ago
Yeah I don't even bother. If they don't specify I just surprise them. Tall will get light cream and 2 sugars, grande 3 sugars and regular cream, venti 4 sugars and regular cream. If they don't like it, politely say it's okay because it's probably the first coffee of the morning but if they clarify it next time we'll happily make it accordingly
Former_Economics9424 2 points 8m ago
It's because Dunkin' knows. Dunkin' has a standard amount of cream and sugar to put in if a customer asks for cream and sugar without specifying. Starbucks should implement a similar system, it's silly that they don't have one.
yayannapav [OP] 2 points 8m ago
I mean that would be nice but people take customization too far in starbucks so we’d probably never use the standard.
peepeepoopaccount 2 points 8m ago
Once a guy asked me for “3 creams” in his coffee and I said we just pour it, we don’t have packets. And he’s like “ok give me the equivalent of 3 creams” like bro idk what that is. I just guessed the amount lol
FemboiTomboy 2 points 8m ago
they're like, a 1/4" each
Andromeda-2 2 points 8m ago
When I worked at Starbucks like 8-9 years ago, I could’ve sworn there was some kind of standard with this. I believe you would fill the top inch and a half with cream and the amount of sugar packets you used depended on the size of the cup (like with syrups). I could be wrong, or this could’ve been a store-specific thing, or I completely imagined it lol.
mrstoshforeva 1 points 8m ago
I just ask “do you have a preference on what kind and how much sugar?” The cream unless they specify I just do what I want 😂
Katerade__ 1 points 8m ago
Someone rang in an V iced coffee, there was no other mods on the ticket so I made it to standard… dude takes it, goes to table, comes back BEWILDERED. iS THeRE sWEetNeR iN hErE?! “YES I MADE IT TO STANDARD, WHICH IS WITH 6 PUMPS OF OUR CLASSIC SYRUP FOR A ICED COFFEE. I’m yelling cause I’m on the other bar and it was partly the partner who rang him in fault as well. Never fails that as soon as you done clarify what they want In that damn iced coffee there’s a problem
nikkicarter1111 1 points 8m ago
This might be unpopular, but you're asking a yes/no question: "do you want [...]?" It's not super surprising that you sometimes get a yes/no response.
yayannapav [OP] 1 points 8m ago
They can elaborate though. If you want to go on a technicality, why don’t they say “yes AND i want…” or just “no”. It’s not as deep as I’m making it out to seem but I’m gonna die on this hill 😪
nikkicarter1111 1 points 8m ago
Oh, absolutely, and it would be more efficient if they responded with yes and or just no. My point is that if you ask a yes/no question, sometimes you will get a response like that. Maybe a more open ended question would eliminate it? I can't think of one off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone could!
Gameb0i6 2 points 8m ago
Maybe just ask them “how much cream and what kid of sugar and how much would you like?” It really isn’t that hard tbh.
CareerHistorical6345 1 points 8m ago
Nah earlier today we didnt have Pike for the drive through i asked him if he wanted an Americano instead and he said “regular coffee , just regular coffee” and he couldn’t understand what I was trying to say and he just drove away
sparkleblarkle 1 points 8m ago
Customer: one black coffee please me: okay! wh- customer: with cream and 6 sugars and 2 pumps of vanilla
