I want to unionize my store and here’s why (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by No_Wishbone_2847
I’ve been with the company for going onto 4 years, we’ve had to switch two different districts and store managers. My first manager was amazing, he’d be involved with the crew, help us when we desperately need it, he was on-top of everyone’s mental health and cared about how everyone was doing and feeling. Now with my new manager after we changed districts (after covid) she doesn’t know how to properly run a store that also has drivethru - she only worked at a cafe. She understaffs the morning people, she complains about how bad our customer connection is (we usually have 3-4 people on the floor until 10). There’s never communication between SSV, Managers and baristas. When baristas decide to speak up about something they get shunned and talked down to or they downplay it as if it doesn’t matter, my manager gaslights and thinks what’s best for the team without their consent to things such as a partner is going through a rough time with depression, called in a bit here and there and got told their hours are being capped at 18 hours which isn’t livable with how expensive everything is.

I don’t know, I’m just tired of baristas being treated like punching bags and being punished for needing days off when there’s call ins everyday. And the fact that higher ups have favourites which is very noticeable (more hours, treated nicely, can be out of dress code like having nails or hair down)

What can I do aside from unionizing? Do I message my DM and see what happens or do I just try to get everyone to sign the papers and take it to labor board.

Sounds like my store honestly. We also got a new SM who only cares about metrics and not partner physical and emotional health. My entire SSV team is ready to put in their two weeks as well as half the baristas are ready to quit/transfer (if the SM let’s them transfer). If you’re really passionate about your store and the company then yes I would try and organize a union. I feel like your DM would’ve seen some of these warning signs already, so I wouldn’t even bother going to them, they will probably gaslight you too. But be prepared for corporate retaliation against you. They will claim it wasn’t about the union, they will write you up or fire you over your shoes or some shit. But stand your ground and have a back-up plan. Good luck!

I disagree. If you are passionate about the store and company, you'll take the right steps. Document what your SM is doing wrong (get other written documents from other partners). Then reach out to your DM. If you feel that your DM is not supporting you, call ethics and compliance. As nice as it may seem to unionize, it should not be your go to option. Far too many stores are unionizing because of bad SMs and I believe that's an issue that can be resolved faster than unionizing.

Good point. Unionizing should be a last resort. I’m just a little jaded cuz we had a SSV get fired when she was trying to unionize us and they covered it up by saying it was something else. Our DM is useless but hopefully other districts are not like mine.

That sounds frustrating and I'm sorry to hear that. I've been a partner over 4 years myself and recently promoted to an SM. Trust me when I say the system works, it's not always pretty, but if you are professional and diligent, these things are usually corrected.

Can you be our SM? 😭 mine doesn’t care about partner mental health and keeps hiring dumb, unreliable people and then gets furious when our window times are a couple seconds too long. There has to be a balance between caring about the business and caring about the partners. Good luck with your store! I’m sure you’ll do great!

I recommend privately gathering support and then getting in contact with SBWU (Google it). Don't let mgmt find out
