Am I wrong for feeling this way?(self.starbucksbaristas)

So remember how the minimum wage went up? I’ve already got a raise and should’ve gotten another one but they changed the minimum wage so I just got put to that. I’m upset I’m making the same amount as someone that just started today, or yesterday, or last week/ yanno? So now whenever it’s raise time they’ll still continue making the same amount as I am. Can I even ask my manger for a raise? Is that a thing for Starbucks?
cats_with_tentacles208 points8m ago
I was talking to some of the newer partners last week and found out I'm making a dollar less than the new hires and I've been here almost two years lol ugh
xthefabledfox75 points8m ago
What? Everyone should be making at least $15 an hr
Assiqtaq75 points8m ago
Sometimes they will move everyone to the minimum, and then advertise for new hires at slightly more. So they can appear competitive. I have been in the situation before, generally it will end up with a store full of new people and very few to no experienced people.
cats_with_tentacles36 points8m ago
Yeah, I'm making 15.45 and several of the new highers (3 months or less) are making 16.50. I'm supposed to be meeying with my DM to talk about it when he gets back from vacation
xthefabledfox20 points8m ago
How are the new hires making that much? It’s supposed to follow base pay and only tenured hires get a percentage more
cats_with_tentacles12 points8m ago
I'll have to get back to you once I have my talk with the DM cos I have no idea, I'm very confused
Heybitchloll5 points8m ago
I work at target, this happened there but they ended up raising everyone whod been there up to the amount new hires make after liek a pay check, idk how long this has been going on for you or if it’s the same or not I hope it changes for you cause yeah no it’s not fair
yogigirl237 points8m ago
I used to work at McDonald's and they did the same thing to me. They're hoping you don't fight it. I would say that with my work ethic and time put into the company I would still like a raise review. I work harder than the new hires and would like my pay to reflect that.

You 100% can pay different wages for the same job. It's typically a range (job pays between x and x, based on experience, tenure and demand at the time of hiring)
This happens quite often in food service/retail.

So what is minimum wage at Starbucks?? My friend is a manager and says she is making $15 now? I thought it was $15 no matter what.
OkFunny9774 [OP]27 points8m ago
I think it depends on most places- where I’m at it’s $15 I’m not sure if they made it to where EVERY one is $15. If your friend is a manager there’s no way her store is doing $15 cause managers shouldn’t be making that low in general unless you mean shift and a shift at my area is $18-$20 I think?
Ill_Student581715 points8m ago
The Starbucks is very small and inside of a grocery store if that changes anything😅
use-that26 points8m ago
That means it is a licensed store, so they have different rules than stand alone corporate stores. Most licensed stores get the pay of the store they’re inside so they are probably following the wage of the grocery store they’re in. Corporate store minimum is 15$/hr for baristas, usually 18-20$ for supervisors, and salary for store managers
rszdemon6 points8m ago
She’s not a manager then. She’s just using that term to make herself sound better, or her store is giving her that title to make her feel more a part of the team.
She’s a normal barista, but at those grocery store kiosks you’re expected to basically run the entire place by yourself. She makes whatever the base pay is for floor staff at the grocery store.
berniesmom277 points8m ago
i mean she could be a manager within that grocery chain. it’s a department in the store, that department has a manager.
uwumoment3 points8m ago
which would make sense because grocery is usually 15
Babeyy_Olivia12 points8m ago
Sometimes they do raises based on how long you’ve been working so, this last February I believe, partners that had been there for 2 years got a slight raise and then partners that I’ve been there for 5+ years got a slightly larger raise. I think that’s what it was.
lilangrytiger9 points8m ago
You can ask for a raise! It will be performance based in my experience. I would recommend doing it! The worst they can say is no.
Assiqtaq7 points8m ago
You can always ask, I probably wouldn't expect it to go anywhere good for you, but you can ask.
Wonderful-Put-59725 points8m ago
Trenta rant!! After more than a decade with the company I was on the same boat with high schoolers making the same or more than me. It's BS and frankly shameful
elrobolobo8 points8m ago
I agree with how frustrating that is, but the cup size refers to the length of the rant not the intensity of the feelings
Wonderful-Put-59722 points8m ago
Oh thank you for.clarifying. it was after a VERY long shift and I had every intention of going on and on but I bored myself so just STOPPED!
elrobolobo2 points8m ago
Oh yeah I've been there haha
miniinovaa2 points8m ago
Pffft this took me out
bbybutterflygrl2 points8m ago
I had this exact conversation with my manager and they said the company no longer gives performance based raises. Only based on tenure. To be tenured you have to have been hired at least 2 years before the date of the raise. Tenured partners usually get a 5% raise each year and everyone else only 3%. This year was different because they put everyone in the US at $15. If you were already making $15 then you got the 3-5% raise depending on tenure. I make the same as a starting barista too even though I’ve been with the company for almost 2 years. It sucks.
Nachos_are_Great2 points8m ago
No you are not wrong for feeling this way. I have been in that position before. I was a SSV for a long time and for the few years they were gradually trying to get the minimum wage up, every year they raise it, me and other long-time partners would end up getting paid the same as newer partners. This was never addressed during my time there so I figured if the company won’t adjust my pay, then I will adjust the effort I put in. From doing the MOST, I took it down to about 15-20% lol. New SSVs have a customer issue? Need help creating the daily and/or weekly order? Need help to re-balance tills? Need help with the food management tool? No, thank you! Figure it out on your own or ask the manager. If I am getting paid as a new SSV I wouldn’t be expected to know these things anyways. (: Kicker was I still a good worker even after taking it down a notch, but it did make me feel good with what they were paying me.
elrobolobo2 points8m ago
Get a different job and apply for your position when it opens
kaynist2 points8m ago
nope, totally valid. its one of the many reasons why i left my last job. id been there 4 yrs and rather than giving me a raise to math my time there, i was making the same as new hires despite experience + loyalty to the company. its fucked up.
dnims242 points8m ago
Wait I thought they raised it by percentage based on what position you’re in?
rlogranite1 points8m ago
You could ask for a raise but you won't get it.
Koalastars0091 points8m ago
Best thing to do is bring it up to your management. Maybe look into applying at a franchise location and see what they offer. If you do get an offer, let them know what the other place is offering you. Take care of yourself first before the business. For context I’m in Texas where the minimum is $7.50hr. So the wage varies. Maybe use this opportunity to make the jump into retail. Keep us updated on what happens :)
Kmsss1 points8m ago
There was a huge realignment registering pay that should have adjusted everyone within your own market.
jazzysoranio1 points8m ago
I’ve been with the company over 10 years, and let me tell you that has always been an issue. And every year I would get the same response from the district managers and other Starbucks peeps that it’s been fixed and partners who have been with the company such and such amount of time gets such and such a percentage more. And every time I would say I don’t actually care what all those numbers mean, the number I care about is the amount that I’m getting paid which is still the same as new people.
capsule_of_anxiety11 points8m ago
At a licensed Starbucks, I make $14 and change bc I have 3 years of experience in a corporate Starbucks. A girl hired 2 weeks before me with no prior job experience makes $12.50. Two people currently equivalent to me in position make $13.50. Our team lead (SSV equivalent) makes $18 hourly 🙃 I’m being groomed to take her place so hopefully I get about what she’s making now
miniinovaa2 points8m ago
I’m so sorry I hate that you used the word groomed lmao
capsule_of_anxiety11 points8m ago
Lmaoooo it was the only word I could think of 😅🤣
No-Carob-50671 points8m ago
I’m currently in the same boat. My store opened two years ago and I was a part of the grand opening crew. There is not many of us left now but we pull so much weight during peak and any shift honestly. We were quoted to get a raise of a little over 16 and then base pay changed or whatever and we are getting 15 like someone who was hired yesterday. Majority of our store is new hires.. which is totally fine but when I have been loyal to the company and do way more than they can it stings. Like I’m not a trainer but I feel like I am. I am probably going to leave soon because we have all put in complaints and met with higher ups since and still no luck.
ihavetwodogz1 points8m ago
As a former sbux manager, yes, we can give you a (small) raise.

gabby246811 points8m ago
Yeah it’s always been shitty in this regard, the weekly update said we’re gonna have pay transparency so we can see what everyone is making in our areas I guess. Not by name but I hope that’ll make it easier to argue for ourselves.
Affectionate-Ad92900 points8m ago
can we ask for a raise? im a ssv but am doing way more work than other ssv’s in my store
miniinovaa1 points8m ago
You can but it’s unlikely they’ll give it to you. If you do I also wouldn’t advise saying the reason why lmao
Comfortable-Plane944-27 points8m ago
You’re upset other people are making a better wage? Even though your wage just got better?
KJ2998SJ47 points8m ago
It's the problem with large wage jumps, and companies that don't bump up the pay of long term employees to match. If you've been at a company for, say, a year - and you're making $15/hr, and starting wage was $14- and now minimum wage goes up to $15/hr. Now you're making minimum wage again even though you've been working for a year. It's not only unfair, but it actually sets you back in the economy, as you are now effectively being paid less because inflation is now going to jump again due to this large minimum wage increase. So yes, they're upset about it, and rightly so.
OkFunny9774 [OP]42 points8m ago
I’m not upset it’s a better wage. I’m upset at the fact I am back to base wage
giftedburn0ut19 points8m ago
I think the issue is that as a tenured partner who already got an approved raise from the minimum pay, this "raise" brought them back to base pay even though they weren't making base pay before
BeardiesRule1125 points8m ago
That’s the fine print.
Angstywitch9 points8m ago
That’s not the point. I went through the same thing with Starbucks and while your manager can’t do anything about it you can reach out to your dm and explain your stance, there is no reason that you should be making the same as someone who just started. Fuck Starbucks.
Data_Dame-12 points8m ago
Question, why do people feel like they deserve a better pay simply by existing longer?
imathrowayslc12 points8m ago
Capitalism. A worker with experience adds more value to the bottom line, therefore is worth more. It's a shitty system but the one we live in.
Data_Dame-13 points8m ago
A worker with experience does not always add more value to the bottom line, therefore shouldn't be worth more. I don't think there is a perfect system. But to say simply I have been doing this longer therefore I'm better, it's false. It's a case by case situation. I'm sure even at your store, the most tenured partners are probably not your best partners.
