I was on register and a customer ordered a iced caramel macchiato, she asked me what the difference between a latte and a macchiato is and I said “it’s milk first then the shots on top for the macchiato” then she said “so if I stir it around it turns into a latte?” I looked dead in her eyes and said “yes”

Lmfao I keep getting people asking for a macchiato with no whip and I have to fight the urge to tell them it doesn’t come with whip anyways
Responsible_Snow710954 points8m ago
Dont fight the urge lol tell them because one day if they want whipped cream on it or if someone theyre with orders it and theres none on there, that customer will be like "its supposed to have whip on there! Mehh"

People who get macchiatos stirred or upside down kill me 💀💀💀💀 I get it’s cheaper slightly than a vanilla latte with caramel drizzle but still
captainchainsaw324 points8m ago
Ugh same At my store we have these new biodegradable cups and so we can’t pull shots directly into the cup anymore because the cup will melt, so making upside down macchiatos is even more annoying
noir_fae1 points8m ago
are you at a liscenced or corporate ?
captainchainsaw323 points8m ago
Corporate, but I live in Hawaii so the biodegradable cups are because of a law passed here that bans restaurants from using non biodegradable plastics

McDonald’s does come with whip, that’s probably why
musicotic12 points8m ago
Neither the hot or cold macchiatos come with whipped cream at McDonald's

Tbh “before” I became a barista, I didn’t know this either. In my defense, I’ve never had a latte before or any espresso drink. I just thought they were different drinks or something in general.

I really do try my best to be compassionate to customers like this. The Starbucks menu is very complex when looking at it without any knowledge of espresso drinks. Once I got hired, I finally understood the menu. It’s not entirely the customers fault they don’t know the difference between a macchiato and latte.

Also iirc a traditional “macchiato” is way different than a Starbucks macchiato. Had this Italian guy that would come in and barely spoke English when I was a green bean and I swear the concept of an espresso macchiato almost broke my brain.

I was about to say that our macchiatos are technically latte macchiatos. Espresso macchiatos are completely different, literally being a shot of espresso with a dollop of foam on top.

why are you surprised someone asked a question they didn’t know the answer to and asked a follow up clarifying question?
Assiqtaq9 points8m ago
People are often surprised at the relatively small differences things have that they assume are very different. The number of people who ask for a vanilla latte with caramel who are nice so I am nice in return and tell them I'm just going to charge them for a caramel macchiato and are shocked, well it isn't huge because I'm not generally that nice but it is all of the very few. I had a girl yesterday who wanted an iced pumpkin spice latte with no shots, she had no idea that was a legitimate drink. In that case I didn't enlighten her because they were, frankly, rude. But I charged her for the correct drink because I'm not that mean. People tend to just assume that the different thing is an entirely different thing.

The other day I had someone come through the drive thru asking for an iced caramel macchiato with no vanilla syrup or caramel drizzle. She definitely only paid for an iced late upside down
uwumoment2 points8m ago
starbucks makes it very hard to learn their menu, so of course customers won’t be knowledgeable about coffee. starbucks sizes and drink names are all they know. it’s their secret to keep customers from buying better coffee 🤭
baoness1 points8m ago
I had a customer saying something similar and I just told him it’s just a way to make the drink. It means stained so literally your vanilla milk stained with espresso and caramel drizzle.

I mean, *real* macchiatos are only a doppio topped with some foam.
