Old Manager Calls Me to Train New Hire(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ShinXalus
As stated in the title.
I worked at Starbucks for about 5 years (Barista - Shift Supervisor - Self Demoted due to Non-Work related issues - back to barista).
I was definitely a good worker, not the best, but pretty good. Now, I haven't worked for Starbucks for about 5 years now, and an old manager just called to ask if I could train a new hire and do their first sip. I was just wondering if this was normal, cause I am legitimately confused lol. (I'm in the NYC area FYI)

I think your manager is drunk

HA, she sounded cohesive xD

So you’re fully separated and no longer an employee, for the past 5 years? That is a very strange request.
ShinXalus [OP]30 points8m ago
RIGHT? I was legitimately confused lol

you better get a contractor rate if you do this lmao 😂 ask for like $90/hr with a four hour minimum and see what he says
ShinXalus [OP]21 points8m ago
If only I even had the time for that lol. I already shot her down xD

By starbucks standards, you'd have to be trained if you were to go back and the training changed last year. Not sure how she thought you were the best choice over someone who's currently a batista or trainer.

... Was this a misdial and they meant to call someone still with the company with your same name? I've been called by a previous coworker, after we'd both switched jobs, with that situation before. But I feel like that's something that comes up in the conversation real fast?
I mean, if they called you, you've got to have more to this story right? Did you just hang up? How does this end here I don't understand

While my name is generally common, I don't believe so lol. We had a pretty good working relationship overall.
And the entire situation came up in these order of events...
1) I saw a missed call while I was coming back from laundry. 2) I saw a voicemail notification on my phone. 3) A text requesting if I can train a new hire and do the "First Sip" with them showed up in my phone. 4) I respectfully declined.
Nothing too eventful, if I'm being honest. I was just genuinely curious if "outsourcing" trainers who used to work at Starbucks was a common thing, but judging by the replies as of now, it doesn't seem so lol.
I'm gonna assume maybe she thought I would be kind enough to accommodate her request? Anywho, I guess that's about it xD

Okay so you never actually talked on the phone for the SM to hear your voice and be like "wait that wasn't who I was expecting." I'm sticking to my theory for lack of any other answer that makes sense.

I'm thinking this is definitely the case, it's likely someone works there or works at another store currently that they're trying to reach.
5 years and OP would be completely out of date on a lot of things and would need retraining themselves.

For free? Orrr?

Your gunna pay me a lot of money to do that
friendlySkeletor3 points8m ago
If any of my old jobs did this id ask for double pay to do it.

Thats so weird lol why is she being weird? Have u seen her much since u left years ago? Even if so, thats still weird cuz numerous things have changed since 5 years ago lol i personally haven't heard of anybody being contacted by Starbucks like 5 years after they had stopped working there.😐

Definitely not normal, I’ve never heard of that happening. Ever.
