Becoming A Trainer Question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by hmarie0716
Okay, so I’ve been thinking recently about how I’d really love to be a trainer. However, I haven’t gotten the chance to ask my manager questions because we’ve been busy recently with holidays coming up.

I have a few questions, and I’m also open to opinions/advice as well! Let me give some background information first: my boyfriend and I both work at the same store, so I already know that I wouldn’t be allow to be SSV.

Anyways, my questions are: Can I still be a trainer while working with my bf? How long do you need to be a partner before the option to be a trainer opens up? What are your experiences as a trainer that you feel are pros or cons to being one?

Becoming a trainer isn’t considered a promotion, so there is no problem with a trainer and a barista having a relationship as long as your manager is okay with it. It’s typically an informal process, there is no application, so there is no hard minimum amount of experience you need, but becoming a trainer after less than 6 months is probably very unlikely.

I’ve been a trainer for a few years. It’s my favorite part of the job. The pros are being able to welcome new partners and help create a good work environment in your store. You also get more flexibility on training shifts because you are often (ideally) not part of the play.

The con is that the manager can still make or break the training experience. If they don’t schedule enough coverage while partners are training, or schedule too many people to train at once, nobody is going to have a good time.

Thank you! I’ve been here just over 6 months, and I have a feeling we may need new trainers soon since we’ll be losing a lot of people. I figured being a trainer would be a fun opportunity for me to not only be helpful to new hires, but also give myself the opportunity to be (I guess?) an informal leader. Like, I can be a leader without the responsibilities of a shift, if that makes sense?
