So… I work in a store that shall not be named. And some guy walks in and steals our tips out of the tip jar and walks out. And we all are yelling at him to PUT IT BACK- except our SSV who does absolutely nothing.
I’m just feeling really dejected and down right now. Anyone else? Ugh.

Shift honestly handled it correctly, as much as that sucks. That's one of those situations that can escalate if you're not careful. Make sure an incident report gets filed, and make sure your manager knows about it, but there's not much to be done otherwise unfortunately
tacosubterfuge98 points8m ago
Yeah I mean aside from the other issues with your shift, as a shift, I personally wouldn't do anything either except maybe call the police and my sm in that order. We've had it happen before and me and my baristas lives aren't worth the $30 dollars in that tip jar.
Professional-Lie-473 [OP]20 points8m ago
Honestly this shift NEVER stands up for us. We have security in our building that we can go get for help at any time. But I’m never allowed to go grab them for help.
Previous issues with this shift include him yelling insults at me in front of guests/other partners and allowing a guest to get in my face and scream and insult and harass me for over an hour and specifically telling me I’m NOT ALLOWED to go get security.
I don’t know. I just feel like crap working at this job.
NerdyGuyBrowsing37 points8m ago
Ooofff. I would definitely look into transferring to another location if I were you. That absolutely shouldn't be happening. Your shifts are there to support you and jump in when things go south with a customer. If that's a regular issue that your manager isn't dealing with, it isn't worth the toll it takes on your mental health to deal with that nonsense...
Professional-Lie-473 [OP]6 points8m ago
My precious ASM (just went to another store) spent all summer hating me and trying to get me to quit. She told me to transfer at one point. For sake of remaining anonymous I won’t go into detail on this but I WOULD transfer if I didn’t have a very good reason to stay at this location…
Professional-Lie-473 [OP]17 points8m ago
Previous. Not precious. Stupid phone.
Garrickrelentless17 points8m ago
I'm curious why you're getting downvoted.
SeaworthinessGold84648 points8m ago
We started dropping tips more often when this was happening. Or if we see big bills we immediately drop them
Distinct-Apartment399 points8m ago
Yeah I worked in a store in center city philadelphia for little bit. After our whole tip jar got stolen twice we started taking back tips every hour or so
moon_light5236 points8m ago
at my store, we’ll put the tips into a cup or something behind the counter so that they don’t get stolen
HappyJos34 points8m ago
Yeah if an adult is desperate enough to steal just maybe call the police or file a report on the IPad. It's never worth something going bad to worse over a few dollars or merchandise
JunipherStar22 points8m ago
Happened to our store too. Dude walked in, took our tip jar and ran out. Also happened in the drive thru before, barista left the jar outside. I wasn’t there the day someone took it from inside, but I’m pretty sure my SM filed an incident and police report with surveillance from the cameras provided.
It totally sucks, but honestly there isn’t really anything your SSV could’ve done. In our training it even states if someone steals to let them do it because of safety reasons. All they can really do is make a report and call the police afterwards.
Thatza_Latza_Matza14 points8m ago
I almost got punched in the face by a very large man for trying to stop him from stealing tips.
I’d rather lose the $20 than lose my front teeth.
Hazel_is_Trans11 points8m ago
My store has same issues around when school is released... we started hiding the tip jar because of it but sorry you had to deal with this... your ssv handle it correctly tho
aspen_fae7 points8m ago
happened to my store too. we're located inside a hy-vee, but we had a guy come in order something and he put a dollar in the tip jar, and while the person at register walked away to do something he reached his hand back in there and took everything. then went down to the end to get his drink and left.
Necessary_Low9395 points8m ago
Start putting the bills in the tip bag instead and leave the coins out. They will feel discourage and leave. However, some do steal the coins so we sometimes just leave some coins out
mama_bibi4 points8m ago
I worked in a casino before my current store and our tips would get taken a lot. It usually happened at night when it was just one of us. We would just empty the tip jar as often as we could. But one time it happened during peak so...
The way I stay positive about it is for whatever reason that person really needed it. If they are down and out that badly to walk up and steal a bunch of ones out of a tip jar then they can have it.
But it sucks. Especially when we are worked so hard and get so much shit from customers as it is. That tip money is hard earned. Karma is a bitch. And you guys will get tipped good sometime this week probably so don't stress over it
neighborhoodswamphag4 points8m ago
If this continuously happens why not move the tip jar out of reach when no one is occupying the register?
Professional-Lie-473 [OP]3 points8m ago
The funny thing is - I was on register and he shoved multiple customers out of the way and reached across the counter (because the tip jar was close to me). Like there’s no way to keep it closer to me and further from him.
neighborhoodswamphag3 points8m ago
If you know what he looks like and y’all see him when he comes in……move the jar completely out of sight. Underneath the register. On the opposite counter behind the line. Put them in a cabinet. Where he can’t have access to them at all.
Neither-Lab74902 points8m ago
We've had our tips stolen while the reg was attended - customer asks a question about the menu, asks for hot water, something that requires barista to turn their back - customer grabs and dips - barista turns around and the thief is already halfway across the street. There was one woman in particular who pulled it off often because she hid her face and was very quick.
rlogranite4 points8m ago
There wasn't much else he could have done. Best thing to do is empty out the tip jar often, remove the large bills, and just keep a couple of bucks in it at any given time.
katia_08283 points8m ago
My store always keeps very little in out tip jar and immediately put bills in a tip bag, happens way too often
caseyfasey3 points8m ago
Our tips got stolen from the DTW's counter all the time. We only will keep a dollar in the box and keep the rest inside at DTO.
mxs42353 points8m ago
Our tips were stolen regularly. Even once the woman sat in our cafe after and proceeded to buy things with them. We now just drop tips whenever there’s anything bigger than $1. It sucks but we can’t confront them or anything.
supasupacoo3 points8m ago
i used to work at a store in san francisco, and this would happen at least once a day, if not multiple. we usually would just leave one dollar bill in there and we'd drop the rest any time someone tipped us. we also tried taping the tip jar down to the counter, but that didn't work either lol
Imaginary-Fix-24692 points8m ago
What my coworkers do to protect our tips, we empty the jar every hour and put it in a jar or paper cup in the back. I'd suggest that... Even if I work at Dutch Bros. You guys need to coordinate together on how to protect your tips ie putting them away in a jar inside the back rooms where a camera is present. We have had our whole jar (the blue box) stolen before... so make sure they're not stealing the literal jar either. If you keep letting someone do something and enabling them... then find a way to let them not do it. If the person that does it come in at a certain time or you see them coming up maybe hide the tip jar... or just do what I suggested first and hide the tips in the back... If they seem aggressive then start to decrease the amount you guys get so they don't notice you guys are secretly decreasing the amount in there... like ie only leave a minimum of 5-10 dollars in there at all times maybe?.... At some Dutch Bros, our Ipads have been stolen, not to mention tips... So be careful
im_feeling_cold2 points8m ago
so based on your comments, your shift does kinda suck in general. however in this specific situation, i have to say they handled it perfectly.
_volcanoboi_2 points8m ago
We don't get our tips and out manager sometimes puts them in the charity box 🙃
Vegan_Sweetie2 points8m ago
Once I had a customer take tips from our tip jar to pay for her coffee. It really pissed me off.
Luxia_Knight2 points8m ago
Hey asm here Pretty sure you should all be reimbursed for that The ssv did the right think you are not supposed to interact and that sucks because I would wanna kick his ass too but you safety if def more important
Neither-Lab74902 points8m ago
We used to get our tips stolen daily at my old store. If there was even one bill in there, chances are it'd be taken. Sometimes they even took the whole plexiglass cube with it. I was on it like a hawk on reg and bagged any bills we got especially fives. But other people wouldn't do it as often, and I couldn't figure it out. They would just leave the tips full even when there was downtime, even though I reminded them often. So they just kept getting stolen.
For months we asked for a better tip jar and when we finally got one that locked, they never gave us the key for it so it filled up for a month until it broke from people trying to shove bills in and then people started just taking bills out of it freely. Finally they got rid of that brand-new broken one and guess what we got to replace it! A plexiglass cube. To this day that store probably gets like 20c an hr tips.
stringtherapy3212 points8m ago
Happened at another coffee shop I worked at too. Time to start circulating a fake internet curse that falls upon those who steal tip jars? Siren could be involved. Could be fun. There are much crazier things people believe.
Aliciarox111891 points8m ago
To avoid this you can drop/empty the tip jar often to reduce the temptation
putridfairy1 points8m ago
Daily happenings at my store. I get less than 1 an hour at my store.
Admirable_Curve_35641 points8m ago
i work at a chicago location and this happened to me when i was on register earlier this year as well. it’s frustrating because you feel like you should’ve done more, but it sounds like everyone did what they could in the moment. my suggestion is to put whatever tips you have into the red tip bags every hour so there’s little to no chance of them getting stolen. hope you’re finding some solace in these comments!
Tania12901 points8m ago
Yup!!! Twice from our drive thru!
xylasphone1 points8m ago
omg we have had our tips stolen twice! it’s insane. the second time a guy in the lobby chased the guy down and then the man who stole our tips pulled a gun out 🥰
willywankaz4321 points8m ago
Lowkey would have just stared as he walked out and then went back to what I was doing lol.
