Starbucks telling shifts to report self harm/suicide jokes to manager, anonymous line and DM???? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by linseeded
I’m a barista. Had a shift today tell us that they were told in their most recent meeting that if a barista makes a suicide, self harm joke that they legally have to report it to the manager DM and some anon line bc otherwise if you off yourself they can be sued by your family since they are temporarily responsible for you? Wtf?????? Anyone else get this weird big brother bomb dropped on them or is my district just exceptionally messed up?

Upsetting as i can’t get through a 4 hour shift without at least 1 “i’m gonna kill myself”

so i guess I'm gonna have to stop saying "this is my # reason" to every minor inconvenience

might be because someone actually did. in buffalo.

One of my coworkers has been hospitalized for multiple attempts so I think they might be focusing on her :/

a partner at a unionized buffalo store just committed suicide thats probably why it's being pushed suddenly.

but it's not because starbucks cares, it's because they don't want the negative publicity lol. i mean how could an employee possibly be stressed out enough from the company and have negative thoughts about it to the point of committing suicide?????? /s

Fr this job is way more stressful than people realize lmfao

I mean if they aren’t a mandated reporter idk why they would expect us to do that.

Company policy *maybe* but it definitely isn’t a law (at least where i live) unless they’re a mandated reporter

I don’t work there anymore, but my store would’ve all been told on lol. Even the shifts made dark jokes all the time. Kept us sane. Plus half the store on antidepressants.

I don't work at Starbucks anymore, but honestly, this would be a bit of a relief to me. I was SS for a barista who was prone to venting in this way, but at one point did it in such a fashion that for a minute I thought it was a serious comment in a very immediate manner. After the situation was over I had a panic attack for a bit. Pretty sure I still have some minor level of trauma after that, as every time someone makes that kind of "joke" now it still feels very real to me. I don't think that's a fair weight to put on other people. And in the circumstance where there is some level of seriousness behind it, yeah, they need to be getting help, and SS's are not equipped to provide that.

That’s very fair

It’s not just you, this explains a lot of sudden things at my store lol
sailorgrumpycat 7 points 8m ago
No mention of this at my store. 257**** ssv at a store in Houston.
linseeded [OP] 3 points 8m ago
That’s odd. My district is in the southwest
extrashotE 2 points 8m ago
SSV 246****, also in the Cypress/Houston area and no I was indeed not told this.

i think it’s kind of nice to have mandated reporters just in case. i don’t think that’s the job of a shift supervisor but it’s a nice thought imo?
linseeded [OP] 6 points 8m ago
The thing is is that the shifts explanation was “the family of the person who committed suicide can sue me personally since I’m responsible for you while at work” which I think is very interesting ..??????? Like no real logic
yungfroggie 2 points 8m ago
that’s…. concerning to say the least? the shift is in charge of running a shift and making sure if there’s like a medical emergency to get that covered, but what you said does not sound right nor within shift supervisor responsibility
linseeded [OP] 1 points 8m ago
I have talked to other shifts and they said that the “suing” part is news to them… ??? So the shift who told me and my coworkers about this was like ???? Pulling it outta her ass or something
goofygoobered 3 points 8m ago
as much as i can totally understand people needing an outlet at work to make self deprecating jokes, I think this new rule makes sense. also, as someone who lost a parent to suicide, it’s definitely triggering for me to hear people make those comments so nonchalantly. if someone is serious about it and needs to vent those feelings i’d like them to be taken seriously 😞

^^^^ this, I lost my best friend and family members as well and it is very triggering hearing suicidal jokes at work. You never know who has had these type of losses so I’m hoping these types of guidelines help to restrict these types of “jokes”
I’m sorry for your loss :(
