You technically do not have the power to close the cafe and can absolutely be written up for it.
Are you a drive thru store or cafe only?

Damn yea I figured I could get written up for it. DM lets us open late if we have callouts but never said anything about closing early. What is a better alternative though, straight up telling customers it’s going to be a 30-40 minute wait?

I mean, quite possibly that, yes. Listen, I work at a store that’s been a mismanaged mess for literal years, and my coworkers and I all realized very recently that if we just make something work, through whatever shortcuts we need to take to do it, then they’re going to think it works when it doesn’t. So let it be fucked up. Do everything in your actual power to make it not. And when it’s awful and you’ve tried it all, you call your DM and let them know it’s unworkable. Either your SM is lying about labor allocation and just scheduling it poorly, or something is terribly wrong. And two partners in a drive through on a weekend day at just about any time sounds like it was scheduled poorly. It’s not going to be pretty, but it’s already not okay. I would let it fall apart a little bit until they realize it’s really not working.

You may possibly be separated for adjusting operations without your SM/DM’s knowledge. I would definitely do what commenter ND mentioned. It’s obviously going to be hard, because it sounds like you care a lot. Don’t let them get away with understaffing you. If your transactions after 12 are above 25 each half an hour (not sure on your specific market but this a rough estimate based on many) you should definitely have a third person there. Run the floor, call your SM and THEN your DM each time. Good luck to you.

Do what you gotta do and if corporate comes back with something, just put them on blast and leave. Remember, they're the ones actively fighting against their own "family". Fuck em, do what you can, cuz they're clearly not doing anything for you. But yes, you probably will get fired if confronted on it.

at my store we’re in a similar situation — our SM has no experience, ignores our calls, leaves by 2pm, & only schedules 2-4 people at a time for mid-night. so yes we tend to just deal with it ourselves.
we will close the front registers and ask customers to DT or mobile order instead so our front person/shift can focus on food & tasks. DT and mobile remain busy until we close but not having to deal with cafe traffic really helps. 😬 we only do this for like an hour before we actually close if we’re struggling. definitely not 3-4 hours.

What do you do in the 3-4 hours the store is closed? Did you bring this up with your SM or DM? How busy does the store get at that time? SSVs and up can check transactions for previous days. Has nobody caught on with the lack of transactions at those times? Not unless it’s usually dead.

Yup, bring it up every week with my SM. He won’t , or can’t give me the extra partner I need. The last few hours where the cafe is closed is all catch up. Dishes piled up, bars look like a swamp, no breaks ran, no shift tasks done. I can’t do my pull if I keep having to come to front reg to take orders. To answer your question about lack of transactions i don’t really know. Most customers are cool with just coming thru the drive maybe it balances back out. On weekends our cafe / drive is slammed all day only slows the last half hour.
