Why do other countries get cooler things?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by OrganizationTop3506
So my for you page on tiktok is literally all about Starbucks, and it’s getting annoying to see how other Starbucks stores around the world get things that the U.S. don’t get. For example sour apple frappe? Sounds nasty but I still wanna make it cause of how cool it looks! Also gingerbread syrup? That sounds so fucking good :(

The main reason is actually because Starbucks is constantly trying to expand. They’ve already locked down the American market as one of the (if not most) popular coffee chain. They dont need to try hard to maintain that status. In other countries there is more close competition and having fun cups and new flavors allows them room to grow in the market

I believe this is it. I heard something just like this recently when talking about another country having a cool drink. Somebody said something along the lines of what u said. Was it u? Lol it was on some post that was about a drink in japan. I completely forget lol but i saw this reasoning a few days ago and it really makes sense
xcanIclockoutx6 points8m ago
Lol not me but this makes sense. I’ve asked our DM before out of curiosity and this was the main reason he could tell
Responsible_Snow71098 points8m ago
Yea lol this makes a lot of sense. I could see this being the reason. I kno starbucks' in the US dont need to attract more customers by putting out crazy cool fun looking drinks but it would make people wana come here more cuz i feel like a ton of people in the US love drinks that look cool or has different colors. I still want something in the US that is different and good like a peach or lime or raspberry refresher or the peach frappuccino that i believe Japan has/had. I think they would be a hit in the US 😩

The wonderful world of over expanding.

For the ginger bread syrup try a grande iced chai with almond milk and two pumps brown sugar. I've found that's the closest I can get to gingerbread whenever I'm in the mood

I don’t like chai latte :(
gabgasm5 points8m ago
If you haven’t tried it with the brown sugar syrup yet give it a go. I hated chai until I tried it with pumpkin cream cold foam. When the brown sugar came out it was a game changer
greenbeanfridge2 points8m ago
This is the *exact* drink that got me into chai. 3 brown sugar and pumpkin foam
plazagirl5 points8m ago
Me too. It’s too sweet for me. I like it with the chai teabags

There's a lot of factors but I'd imagine one of them is the huge difference in standards for food. Frankly Americans will eat anything thats their preffered flavor of sugary garbage. Everything we eat is just full of corn syrup to an insane degree so we're basically trained to love it (i actually am pretty sure candy corn only exists because of the corn industry bc there's no way enough people like that shit). Everyone else has actual food regulations and has different standards so sbux actually has to try. Also everyone else gets way better looking pastries.

Starbucks adapts to some extent in other markets. What Karen in Kansas likes is far removed from other markets like Japan.
erikaasairaaa5 points8m ago
I think they cater to the demographic and what might seem popular for that particular market. I also honestly think they do it to lure in American tourist as well when they visit foreign countries so they try different things but still fill sbux pockets

Sometimes the novelty drinks aren’t around long enough to really catch on. Not everyone goes to Starbucks every day.
Also when they do have a tasty novelty drink, they run out of ingredients, so no one can order it. I’m looking at you caramel apple spice.
lewabwee3 points8m ago
When I first started it felt like we got more novelty drinks for the seasons with unique ingredients. I think the US doesn’t still get them for two reasons: when they bomb they really fucking bomb and even if they don’t interest sometimes fades away before supplies do and our main menu seems to have gotten pretty large in size just by using stuff we already have (with shaken espressos and cold foam variations) so there’s less reason to take risks with short-term novelty drinks that often result in us tossing ingredients.

I buy our merch from China on eBay all the time now. It's cute, I want it. I bought the most adorable little double walled cup with a fox lid and confetti leaves.
I got a really cool bag last week.
djdementia2 points8m ago
The main reason you think it is "cooler" is strictly because it isn't in your country.
If you go to that country I'm sure you'll find many people that think that the US has the coolest flavors and merch.
A big part of the reason is you see US merch every day, so seeing something similar but different is more interesting to you than the same stuff you see all the time. It's partly just psychological that you would seek out things that are new but still feel familiar to you once you've tired of the things you know.

I know the us used to have the gingerbread syrup during the holidays but they discontinued it in 2020. I don’t remember if it was because they didn’t sell well or they just did it because they wanted to. Someone correct me on this

That is definitely a strong factor- we’ve seen how much Starbucks is struggling just to keep up with basic inventory in the US, so to try and orchestrate international-style novelty drinks would be pretty much impossible. Also a big factor specifically in Japan is that their culture has a much higher level of seasonality- the consumer culture is constantly shifting pretty much monthly (at least that’s how I understand it from an American economic perspective), so short term novelties do a lot better there than in the US. Of course it would be fun to do cool drinks like that though, I used to be a baker at Crumbl Cookies and getting to change up the menu every week and constantly experiment with new flavors and recipes was a lot of fun. Edited to link $1 I read a while back about the Japanese consumer trends
jeonzelink1 points8m ago
Thank you for this explanation
fruit_enjoyer2 points8m ago
The best guess i can come up with is country size? I know nothing about economics so idk, but somewhere like japan probably has like 1/10th of the number of starbucks locations as the us, so it’s probably easier to ship ingredients the shorter distance and cheaper to produce ingredients for fewer stores yknow? I’m really jealous of the purple yam halloween Frappuccino they have now

Oh I’ll definitely be reading that. It seems like i’m constantly hearing about an endless number of pop up cafes and limited idol cupsleeve events and stuff
SowMindful1 points8m ago
As a Barista, please stop buying Starbucks products - this is not a good company.
defendtrevornoah1 points8m ago
cos we have trenta :3
yirium1 points8m ago
I can’t remember but I think we did get a gingerbread syrup at one point. It didn’t do too well in our market tho
official_koda_1 points8m ago
I think other places can only order off the menu, they don’t customize drinks like they do in the US(I know in Asia at least idk about UK). Idk if that’s the reason why, but I would imagine drive times would be through the roof if we had all those cool things available but they could be customized.
official_koda_1 points8m ago
Also in Japan they even have just one size for those specialty drinks
Necessary_Low9391 points8m ago
to be fair. They’re catering to what they like. For example, japan has Sakura cherry blossom tea latte. We don’t have it here because we don’t really have that many cherry blossom
