Customers keep ordering lattes like this to make them cheaper. should I correct it based on Starbucks standard?(i.redd.it)
submitted by LissaCat22
beaniexbaby634 points8m ago
Definitely keep making it with a tiny bit of milk and extra ice. I order it like this (even tho I'm a partner) because I actually just want espresso with a lot of ice and light milk.
verdeuce136 points8m ago
I pack it full of ice too and add a touch of milk
mrnotfamous229913 points8m ago
It’s actually standard to do a tall scoop of ice for every size so do light both lol
LissaCat22 [OP]-176 points8m ago
I'm on my lunch so I can explain ~ Here how I make the drink/have trained Grande cup > queue espresso > fill cup full of ice > pump 2 sfv > pour espresso on top > fill rest with choice of milk
evviiieeee246 points8m ago
you’re definitely not supposed to film the rest of it with milk. iced espressos only get a splash of milk and the rest of the cup should have room or more ice.
GaggleGuy71 points8m ago
Only chiming in to further enforce that this is the correct way, I used to think otherwise but had customers actually complain that they actually just wanted the splash of milk/made the way the sticker said.
That said I also had my fair share of “please fill this to the top”. The thing is though, it’s easier to fill up the difference to just make them happy, and it’s a lot more involved to spill out some of the full drink because you’re also spilling out some of the espresso with it.
TLDR: always make it the way the sticker says, and if they want it filled then just fill it up because it’s not worth the stress to worry about making Starbucks an extra 80 cents at the cost of potentially frustrating the customer/yourself. Less of a headache that way.
Edit: sentence structure for clarity.
elote69-42031 points8m ago
Sorry if this is a stupid question. Is this the same for shaken espressos? Only a splash of milk?
evviiieeee41 points8m ago
yup! just a splash, if there’s room at the top i usually just add more ice, but if the drink is made correctly there should really only be room for a little milk anyway
SammehPls3 points8m ago
IIRC, didn’t they say in a weekly update that the new standard is to just top off the drink with the requested milk?
Longjumping_Stick_5621 points8m ago
it’s just supposed to be a splash/ tiny bit of milk. that’s what differentiates an iced espresso with milk from a latte
toasterstrudelboy16 points8m ago
Only thing is that if you're using a thick sauce, please please melt that with the espresso. There's nothing worse than an inch of straight pumpkin at the bottom of a drink XP
Zeldaluvr20073 points8m ago
I went back to my original Safeway Starbucks I originally was trained at a while back, and ordered my usual iced WM with an extra shot. The new guy there didn’t mix the espresso with the sauce *and* insisted the venti has two shots, not three, so I wasn’t getting the amount of shots I ordered either 🙊 I had to ask him to remake it *and* had to teach him the proper way to make it 😅
Kohtako9512 points8m ago
Anything above 4oz of milk is an extra charge. Do not fill the cup.
Big_Iron990 points8m ago
Unless it’s dairy milk (excluding breve/heavy cream) Whole milk, 2%, 1%, and nonfat don’t add a charge if you ask for it to be made with that milk (unless they changed it in the most recent update)
Figured this out when trying to find the most ridiculous free drink you can order.
interyx3 points8m ago
That's only for replacing milks in a milk-based drink like a latte or frappuccino. Adding milk to an iced coffee or espresso tops out at 4 oz or it should be an extra charge because it's not built into the price of the drink.
Aurora_Boreallis5 points8m ago
Use the shot glass to measure the milk until you can eyeball it. Half a shot glass is 1/2” the whole is about the 3/4 maybe a little more
Glittering-Office-364 points8m ago
that isn’t even close to standard for an iced espresso, Syrup, SPLASH of choice milk (quarter inch to 3 quarters inch max) espresso shots, Ice to the top of the cup, then toppings if requested.
tevansalim3 points8m ago
youre enabling the very thing youre complaining about
Renyx2 points8m ago
Milk added should just be a splash or 1/2". Syrup should also be the first thing in the cup with the espresso pulled on top of it so it is fully mixed in. Then the splash of milk, then fill with ice.
Indica-daddy306 points8m ago
If they’re kind, I do it no problem. Idgaf about taking money from a company that pays us fuck-all and punishes folks for trying to unionize.
bigfoots-rightnipple87 points8m ago
Yeah pretty much. If the customers an asshole about it they pay for a latte. But I’m not going to stir shit up with perfectly fine customers trying to charge them an extra dollar for a company that doesn’t give a shit about us.
Indica-daddy14 points8m ago
Exactly! Also your username is amazing. 🤣🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
Mkhillvgc3 points8m ago
Real as fuck. Same goes for panin- nvm I’ll stop there.
dontcry202227 points8m ago
I don't like doing it even if they're nice about it because usually they are asking bc they know it's a hack for a cheaper drink, and the day they ask the wrong barista or a shift manager to do it, it's gonna be an unpleasant experience for everyone involved just by nature of them not getting what they thought they would and the partner having to tell them no, which is never fun
Responsible_Snow710921 points8m ago
Yea ive seen it cause some customers to become irate. I feel like sometimes (definitely not all the time) but sometimes it causes the entitled attitude in people and they say that the other starbucks always does it and they start screaming obscenities. I can care less about starbucks makin the extra money or anything along the lines of that. I personally feel like with the way some people are, itll cause people to expect it at other stores when theyre only following what the sticker says for the drink order
Ordinary-Theory-828919 points8m ago
Why do you all think this is a hack to get a cheaper latte? Most people who order This way just don’t want a drink that is 90% milk.
dontcry20224 points8m ago
I'm not talking about those people, I'm saying the people who order it but then ask for/expect the cup to get filled w/ milk
It is something many people have used as a hack
tricializ12 points8m ago
Exactly. OR they are doing a “hack” for a shaken espresso (the former doubleshot on ice) I stopped ordering the shaken espressos when at least 7/10 times I would walk in the partner either didn’t shake it at all or gave it one or two shakes. Not paying over a dollar for that.
Mafiya74 points8m ago
I agree. Save your coins i guess good for you.
Traditional-Emu-14032 points8m ago
Yup. The only time I care is if they’re rude or their smug little face says they think they’re getting something over on me. Like.. don’t think you’re cute… no milk for you.
omsphoenix2 points8m ago
This!
-Zispy2 points8m ago
See I completely agree, but then what if that customer actually wants espresso with a little milk?
Indica-daddy1 points8m ago
Fair! If I’m not sure what someone wants, I always wait. I’ve had a handful of people who weren’t glad I considered their want with nuance over the years. I’m a picky human myself and I always try to go the extra distance to get it right—one of the few ways I find I’m able to be good to others and find joy in this job lol. Most of our mobile orders are regulars, so it’s not much of an issue their, either.
Audreyy117144 points8m ago
Or you could make the drink the way they ordered and just not fill the cup? Give them what they pay for
canadiadryy43 points8m ago
Yeah, but more often than not, those people complain because they want it filled to the brim, and if your SM is anything like mine, you have to “make the moment right” 🥴
Audreyy11740 points8m ago
Lol yeah no I will straight up tell them if they want a latte they have to pay for a latte. My sm’s view of make the moment right is if we fuck up, make it right. If they’re a dick, they already made their own moment lol
Chromosomes2325 points8m ago
Right but then the training says don’t try to give out free things
dontcry202223 points8m ago
Making the moment right in this scenario would be communicating to them how to order their drink in the future so they get what they want when it is initially made. If your SM allows you to give them what they're asking for in the moment, I guess that's fine, but by communicating that they need to order a latte, it should be a 1 time favor to give it to them for free and in the future they should order correctly. Otherwise at that point they're just taking advantage (and your SM shouldn't allow that. Because drinks are supposed to be made the same at every location, and other locations will likely tell him no or make him pay the correct price)
canadiadryy7 points8m ago
I totally hear and agree with what you’re saying, but often times giving the customer gentle coaching isn’t well received and my SM is very much on the side of kissing the customer’s ass (even if it’s to our detriment).
dontcry20224 points8m ago
Hmmm I can see this, but I think it's more of an issue of how the communication is executed than the communication itself. I think reasonable customers would be receptive to an "oh hey so this is actually how we make our iced lattes! Is this how you prefer your drink made usually? Okay yeah so next time you're in def ask for an iced latte that way it's just how you like it and we'll be able to get it out to you quicker :)"
In the whole interaction, I'm just assuming that they unintentionally just didn't know what to order, so there's no accusation of them trying to be cheap or anything like that. And I'm also not saying *they* were *wrong* to order how they ordered. Nor am I focusing in on how they need to pay more, which isn't fun to hear. The interaction is me just trying to understand what they want and help them obtain that. It's hard to get mad at someone just being nice and helpful
The only time I would be more direct about our standards as it relates to the cost is if they then continued to order the same thing every day and ask for the cup filled with milk.
dontcry20222 points8m ago
Also L on the SM's part
plazagirl1 points8m ago
Speaking as a customer I don’t know the difference and would appreciate some gentle correction. I’m not trying to tip off Starbucks, I usually just know the taste I’m looking for, not the but e correct name. Aka: I’m clueless
thizzinpeace111 points8m ago
no! when i order an iced espresso i only want tiny bit of milk or else i’d order a latte. these ppl are dumb bc then they ask for it “to the top” and they’re ruining the standard for other people who will order and be mad bc they didn’t want it to the top. we have standards for a reason but starbucks knows they’re shit and does everything they can to keep the customers addicted to their shitty bean juice
Lacerda110 points8m ago
Yes! It's maddening how hard it can be to order drinks with a little bit of milk. Every barista assumes I want a latte no matter how I describe adding a splash of milk to my drink.
thizzinpeace4 points8m ago
right!!! like if i wanted my shots drowned in milk then i would order it as such. if it says a splash then it should be just a splash!

Popular_Insurance_3772 points8m ago
If you are talking about the triple expresso- I always add just a little bit of milk and add extra ice. I’ll be dammed if they try to some sneaky shit like ask for more milk! I say, “well then I would have to charge you for a latte” and that usually stops them.
RyusuiJL29 points8m ago
Just as this person said. If they want an iced triple with milk, they get 4oz or less.
olivinemultichrome12 points8m ago
No offense but it drives me insane.
Espresso not expresso.
Popular_Insurance_375 points8m ago
🤧 auto correct me bad
tricializ11 points8m ago
But 4oz of milk is a LOT of milk and not to be charged for if under.
LissaCat22 [OP]-7 points8m ago
I've started to take back to some people lol, in the past I just say "sure" but now im always like "I can but next time a barista will need to charge you for the extra product you're asking for."
Popular_Insurance_3717 points8m ago
Nahhh I’m tired of people doing that plus my manager is hell bent on us not doing it anymore. Granted I am putting my 2 weeks in so I’ll just start giving people free shit
LissaCat22 [OP]6 points8m ago
As a shift manager who only has 4 other employees who all have been here for less than a year... im dying lmaoo. I'm getting close to putting in my two weeks but no other local coffee shops want me 😭
Popular_Insurance_378 points8m ago
I was late by 7 minutes o n c e, and since my store has “tardy” issues she but her foot down on me. And so I’m not dealing with that stress where the next day I go in I might get fired
PoppyPancakes12 points8m ago
I have a customer who will always fight me on a drink like this. She’ll say “you are trying to charge me $8 for a drink when I’m ordering it for $4” and I say back “it doesn’t matter how you order it, I have to charge you for the drink you are getting. If you want 4 shots with milk filled to the top of the cup, you are asking me for an iced latte with no ice and I will ring it in as an iced latte with no ice. It’s not about how you word it, it’s about what you want us to make”
smoothfabric3 points8m ago
Not sure why you’re downvoted here? Maybe it’s Store managers or customers lol. We ought to be able to clarify in the moment what’s right
hotlinee36 points8m ago
Nah, who cares. Starbucks is a multi million dollar corporation, what’s the matter if someone saves a buck or two. but i made their triple espresso to standard, they not getting latte amount of milk
dontcry202211 points8m ago
The issue is more that if you let customers get used to getting things cheap at your store, they may go to other stores with the same expectation ("the other store always makes it that way for me 😡") and not get what they want and/or pay more than they're used to, and the baristas or managers there will have to explain to them the policy and maybe endure an earful of insults or complaining or whatever from the unhappy customer. Which is all around unpleasant.
trousersquid2 points8m ago
Exactly this. If people were chill about it, we'd do it all the time but it's this kind of precedent that kind of encourages people to be shitty...
darby-6119 points8m ago
Let me ask a real question and I truly mean no disrespect. Why do you care? Starbucks is gigantic and a lot of people are struggling, why does it bother you that someone is saving a dollar? Also clearly Starbucks doesn't care about a few bucks with all of the remakes they allow without question and they fact they haven't even tried shutting this down.
marilynmansonsbitch17 points8m ago
i care only because of the other stores that DO follow the standard. i couldnt give a fuck less about filling it up personally, but then we become “the store that does it for me” and it makes the customer assume that they will do it every time, creating an issue. it’s more on having consistency between stores rather than caring about the principle itself.
heyitsme9639 points8m ago
I care because I order something similar to this and half of the time I get a shitload of milk instead of a splash. Customers who do this are usually so rude about asking for milk to the top that baristas end up just assuming everyone who orders this wants that much milk in order to avoid the confrontation.
MiaLedger1 points8m ago
I agree that it doesn't really matter in the end and Idk why so many baristas get so annoyed and upset with it. We really have nothing at stake in these situations and Starbucks doesn't really either.
dontcry20222 points8m ago
This seems like good logic to follow until another store allows something that your store doesn't, and next thing you know a customer is yelling at you in the lobby for not giving them their non-standard TikTok hack to save a dollar
MiaLedger-2 points8m ago
That's why I'd argue that it should be the normal way of doing it.
dontcry20222 points8m ago
But that's a latte with extra ice...
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points8m ago
What I’m trying to figure out is why everyone thinks they want a latte. Is it really uncommon for people to order this and expect only a splash of milk? Lots of people, hell I would w even say most people who order this, are looking for an espresso forward drink instead of one that is 90% milk. I would be annoyed if I ordered shots with a splash of milk and instead got a latte.
MiaLedger1 points8m ago
You know you do have a good point here too
mewwissa11 points8m ago
I usually order an iced espresso like this, because otherwise I get barely any ice and too much milk, a watered down coffee. Some people truly just want an iced espresso versus a hella milky coffee.
nightimevil10 points8m ago
Question: why isn't the milk being inputted correctly?
If it was put in correctly, you wouldn't have to tell them anything except for the fact that it is policy for us to not fill up an iced espresso to the top with milk. (But they can definitely do multiple milks.) They would also only ask if they noticed, and some just might not notice.
Sometimes it's not a hack, just to lessen the espresso flavor (we do not have great espresso imo).
LissaCat22 [OP]3 points8m ago
Is there a special way? My transition from the old K registers to the new SB registers was a bit rough. We were going through a manager switch at the time, and I've been told there's some drinks I ring up cheaper than "actually Starbucks" lol. I'm not for sure how to fix my issue however as I'm the oldest barista, and I'm not supposed to communicate with SB barustas outside of K stores.
nightimevil6 points8m ago
I wouldn't say special, but the milk section should be divided into two. Section One is for milk all the way to the top (so it'll just say Soy on the ticket instead of Soy 1/2"). Section Two is for milk to be a certain amount (as we know, 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4"), and it should be the only one with Extra/Less on the top of it. There should even be labels on the side.
Iced Espressos ONLY get the second section because it is standard for us to never ring them up with milk to the top. If they ask for milk to the top, you offer a latte instead because that is our policy. They can either take it or leave it.
LissaCat22 [OP]2 points8m ago
Ahhhh okay that makes sense, if they say stuff like light milk then I'll ring it up that way. It honestly depends how tired I am and how they word their order lmaooo. I shall train it that way then, thank you 💖 I'm not the best trainer or manager as I felt tossed into this role, but im trying... I want what's best for the team.
nightimevil3 points8m ago
You're all good! POS system is a lot. I still feel lost whenever we get a new launch. In the store resources, there is info for the POS. Also, for if they don't specify extra or light milk, for iced espressos the standard is just 1/2" of milk.
Bhaisaab869 points8m ago
Jam-pack the cups with ice and do a splash of milk. If the customers aren’t paying for the milk, they don’t get more than four ounces.
PoppyPancakes9 points8m ago
Don’t give them a lattes worth of milk and it’s fine. I usually order a X iced espresso with oat milk on my days off because I don’t want to pay for a latte and I also don’t want to drink a cup of milk
MiaLedger8 points8m ago
I know a lot of my coworkers will get upset with people who do this but just so long as the customer is nice I don't really mind. Starbucks costs an arm and a leg and if people want to try to save a little money that much then I don't mind letting them. Starbucks isn't really going to miss the difference anyway.
Also, if I wanted then I could make an argument about how going along with it is a way of "making the moment right."
Ordinary-Theory-82892 points8m ago
I’m still flabbergasted that everyone seems to think people who order this secretly want a latte but don’t wanna pay for it. Not everyone wants a drink that is 90% milk….I’d be annoyed if I ordered a triple espresso with a splash of milk and got a latte.
sten456 points8m ago
The bloodsuckers at corporate (who get six figure salaries, on site child care, all standard corporate holidays off and multiple weeks of PTO) program the POS and set the pricing rules. Those people have decided this loophole is acceptable so why should you care? In fact the real question is why don’t we all figure out the loopholes and pass them on to everyone…
BelligerentCoroner5 points8m ago
Typically I make iced espressos to standard.
My one exception is a regular who orders an iced blonde doppio in a venti cup, 4 pumps WM, extra sweet cream, extra pumpkin foam, and caramel driz. (*so much sugar. so little coffee.*) But she's paying $8+ every day for that drink, so imma give her her money's worth!
official_koda_4 points8m ago
I had a customer who came everyday and did the same thing. My manager told me to let her order it however she wants….I’ll say her car broke down in our DT twice so I’m thinking she needs to spend less money on coffee and more on fixing that car
-Zispy4 points8m ago
I see people doing this all the time and I just make it to standard- 3 shots, 1/2 in milk and pack it full of ice. Idk if they’re too dumb to notice because it looks full with all the ice, or if that’s actually what they want lol
Mcnugget_unlimited4 points8m ago
Used to be a partner, I order like this because I just want the espresso with a hint of syrup and or milk to sweeten it lol I don't want a bunch of milk
nerdsonfire4 points8m ago
Nah if starbucks as a company cared they’d explicitly tell us what we should be doing to combat this. or they could update their computer system to recognize the parallel between the original drinks and the cheaper shortcuts and it would automatically update the product. Plus there are enough people adding 50 mods for a $20 frap, that in the end it probably all balances out.
You don’t have to save money for a company like starbucks. Don’t be petty for starbucks. Be petty because the customer is an AH. SB pays you to give the customer what they asked for so don’t let this get you upset.
Also I love when people find loopholes, good for them.

LissaCat22 [OP]0 points8m ago
Everyones got it wrong - I'm trying to survive on my own, so I don't ever think about making anyone an extra dollar. Starbucks has it's standards and it preaches by those. And im aware you can order multiple drinks several different ways. I was simply just asking if there was a standard for this certain one. I don't feel the need to step in and change it, im glad people are finding ways to order drinks at a cheaper price.
Vosstonmass14 points8m ago
I order 6 shots iced with a pump of white mocha and a splash of oat milk and I always tell them “in a tall cup”. I’ve had it put into a bento iced cup before as well. I’m a partner so I try and make sure to order the right way but sometimes the barista takes the liberty of assuming I want extra ice and/or milk to make it a late’ but I just want a stiff punch in the face with a bit of flavor to take the edge off the espresso flavor.
alphagoddessA3 points8m ago
Hell no! You have to ask which side to be on between the evil corporate overlords and one of your fellow humans? Not a good sign… unless rye customer is an asshole let it go and give some back to the working class!
dontcry20223 points8m ago
Standard is a maximum of 3/4 inch milk for iced espresso shots, more than that is supposed to be a latte
I would fill it with ice and the standard amount of milk for what they ordered. A lot of the ice will melt, making the drink watery. You can add more ice if they want. Customers may ask if you can top it off with some more milk. I don't fill it up all the way but I'll give them another half an inch or so
If their expectation is shots + ice for that cup size + filled with milk, they need to order a latte. I would ask your SM what to do if they ask for it to be filled with milk. The answer may be to refund them and ring it up as a latte or it may be to have them go back and order a cup of milk that you could then add to the drink, I'm not sure.
AverageHoarder3 points8m ago
Decaf all the way.
LissaCat22 [OP]-2 points8m ago
They didn't want decaf espresso in it. - I will say ordering the top way has become a lot more popular and it's confusing my new baristas. I have to walk them through a lot of drinks because people ordering the most simplest shit in the most complicated way.
AverageHoarder9 points8m ago
Woosh
Late_Pomelo_9999 points8m ago
Nah decaf them for going around the system lol. But for real this is always mad infuriating
narviat2 points8m ago
dont decaf people without them knowing, its a really shitty thing to do and for all you know theyre carefully watching and measuring their caffeine intake and making sure they have enough to function in the way they need to, same with giving caffeine to people who asked for decaf, you dont know if they have underlying health conditions where caffeine or lack of can fuck them up. if you wanna "get back at them" let the shot die instead
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points8m ago
Nobody is doing around the system. There’s a difference between a latte and an iced espresso. Why is it so hard for You all to believe that they actually just wants espresso shots with a bit of milk instead of a drink that’s 90% milk?
No_Length18112 points8m ago
Ask your shift what you should do and do that. No need to let it take up your brain space and mental energy after you clock out!
Puzzleheaded_Lie7062 points8m ago
I had a lady who would order 5 shots, in a venti cup, with light ice, and breve. Then would have us remake the drink because it was “ half full” by the 3 rd time I charged her for the breve and gave it to her on the side.
Ps. As for me, I like it packed with ice, then cream.
thecuriouslittleben2 points8m ago
I remember we had this issue at our store.... best thing to do is to add a touch of milk. When they complain just explain it to them the issue and that if they want it filled to the top you need to charge them accordingly.
Gameb0i62 points8m ago
If they order that at my store we don’t fill it all the way. And if they ask for more milk we have them go pay the difference. Sorry but if you’re trying to save a few cents at Starbucks then you should prolly go to a cheaper coffee house.
MXYBEMXVE2 points8m ago
Nah let them save money. Corporation doesn’t need it
ElevatorsAreScary2 points8m ago
Make as a shaken espresso with a splash of milk. When people complain, explain the difference between that and a latte. I find this easier than trying to correct when they pay. Also tell them when they order it won’t be full, because that would be an iced latte
LostinTheBeat05152 points8m ago
I would love to make it as it is, with a splash of milk. However, we have a regular at my store who’s a pain and orders a Trenta quad with, as he says, extra soy milk. In actuality, he wants it filled with soy, and gets mad when we don’t. I’ve explained that that’s in fact a latte, but he refuses to pay for that (as a venti) and since other coworkers simply give him this, we just end up giving him what he wants. But I still find it incredibly annoying to make. Someone should not get away with paying 4$ for 30 ounces worth of a latte, not even if he’s a regular
No-City-16822 points8m ago
I mean… how do you even ring that up in a trenta cup? The POS doesn’t let you select trenta for espresso drinks.
LostinTheBeat05151 points8m ago
As an ask me usually. Most people know his voice though. Comes in every day around 10am
No-City-16821 points8m ago
I’m surprised people Let that happen tbh… espresso drinks in trenta cups are definitely against standards and always big no nos at any of the Starbucks I’ve worked at
JustOneMoreChapter042 points8m ago
I honestly wouldn’t mind it at all. The company makes a lot of money, a dollar difference on a drink won’t hurt them and the customer saves a bit of money like this.
jordan_leigh2 points8m ago
If they’re not charged, they are to get 4oz of milk. Max
1Delta2 points8m ago
I order iced espresso like this but with cold foam rather than milk.
I don't want a latte because that's too dilluted for me.
Mushyroom4202 points8m ago
I get that at other stores just because I just want a little cream and shots and it’s nothing about the price. You’d just add just as much milk as you would cream in like an iced americano and it’s not filled all the way to the top like an iced latte would be. If they ask you to fill it to the top of the cup for them that’s when I would be like okay they are just trying to get a cheap latte so no
mostintuitively2 points8m ago
I just call people out to embarrass them lol. “Ah gotcha. Trying to save a few bucks so you don’t have to full price. Smart!”
HLEnterkin2 points8m ago
My store usually tells them "Hey we just want to let you know that that cup won't be all the way full. Unfortunately that isn't considered standard and to fill it to the top I would have to charge you for a latte. Is that okay?"
romansapprentice2 points8m ago
Why are so many Starbucks workers so desperate to help a company that so constantly spits in their faces? You want to save some more milk and give Starbucks some more money instead of just doing someone's dumb fifty cent hack? I truly don't get it.
Tarbucks08992 points8m ago
You get what you pay for. It’s a iced espresso that’s why it’s ice espresso it’s supposed to have a little bit of milk otherwise it would be a latte they’re two different drink
impasse6022 points8m ago
For the first one your supposed to push the 1/2 nonfat button. When you push the other button it means fill it up with nonfat and if that’s how they want it then yes correct them
peepeepoopaccount2 points8m ago
Personally I never fill it up all the way but I will fill it up maybe half or 2/3, although it’s still mostly ice tbh. I don’t really care I mean if they get a cheap latte it’s not like it comes out of my pocket, I just hate when I make it standard or fill it even above standard and they open their cup and tell me to fill it up more :/ like u didn’t order a latte
melllpo2 points8m ago
I used to make it with the correct measurements for the triple cup. Asking for it in a larger cup doesn’t mean you get more product. If they complain about it not being full I either pack it with ice or explain grande cup ≠ grande amount of milk.
peachiez_2 points8m ago
if they’re in cafe or DT i always ask if they want the cup filled the rest of the way with milk or not, and let them know that i’d have to charge them differently if they want it filled all the way. if it’s a mobile order they’re not getting it all the way. my SM has been super strict on this before so that’s what i do in order to keep my job while also being kind enough to the customer to make the moment right
Jaded_Fun_71332 points8m ago
I tend to fill the milk to the bottom line with these and if they say extra milk I go to the middle of the space between the bottom and middle line if that makes sense
Jaded_Fun_71332 points8m ago
Just don’t make it with a lot of milk
neighborhoodswamphag2 points8m ago
I do three shot of espresso milk to the bottom line. Fill with ice the rest of the way.
mossygreentree132 points8m ago
yeah the standard is shots, splash of milk like 1/2 (i think) and then ice
plantainpapii2 points8m ago
Yeah, I do. No one complains. If you broke go to Dunkin. ^this isnt a hiaku
Wonderful_Nightmare2 points8m ago
No 😌 just keep ringing them up how they order it
Thatgrlnextdoor32 points8m ago
Plz dnt be a Karen
sunflowercupcakee2 points8m ago
As a former barista now customer, I absolutely hate when my espresso are filled to the top with milk. I don’t want a latte and if I push light milk I get a drop of milk. I would not fill it up to the top and then when they came to get it explain to them that if they want it filled up to the top then order a latte because there is a difference
nodnarb_thebarista2 points8m ago
It states in our policy that milk is free if it is 4oz or less. If it is more, then you charge for the drink it should be.
jesthere2 points8m ago
I get 3 pumps white mocha, 3 shots espresso, swirl, pack cup with ice, just a splash of half and half on top (sometimes). Closest approximation to *cà phê sữa đá* (Vietnamese iced coffee).
SimoWilliams_1372 points8m ago
As a Starbucks customer, I actually find it annoying when I order a certain size coffee, but in a larger cup, but I’m given the bigger size of coffee. I also order a certain amount of sugar added, and I want my ratio preserved, with room to stir and add my own cream.
So for what it’s worth, I say don’t fill the cup when they order like this. RESPECT THE RATIO (& the menu spec).
p1mpcarti2 points8m ago
When people order this and they tell me after I've made it that they want it filled all the way I tell them they have to ask for extra milk (3/4")
Sweet-Conflict41762 points8m ago
Meh. It’s a triple shot. Just keep doing extra ice let it melt, put a bit more ice and then top it off. If it was a double shot with an alternative milk then maybe I’d say something.
BunnieSPH2 points8m ago
Fuck Starbucks, do whatever is cool with your team and them.
Starbucks isn’t going broke anytime soon. Though I’m sure they like to pretend.
Heidicindy2 points8m ago
Just charge for milk.

Why are you assuming they want a latte? Looks similar to what my order is (quad shot blonde, iced in a venti cup extra ice, extra splash of coconut milk, SFV.) I do NOT want 4oz or more of milk. I want a good size splash. I don’t care if it’s filled. I like the ice to melt and drink slowly. But I honestly bought my own machine recently because of petty partners who make assumptions that I’m trying to get away with something.
tregnoc1 points8m ago
Make it to standard and if they ask for it to be filled just do it.
lizardlehwizard1 points8m ago
I always get a quad iced blonde in a venti cup with extra ice and I ask for cold foam on top, I just want a little of the foam and some stores will fill it all the way to the top. I hate it when they fill it to the top
agigante021 points8m ago
nope when i order an iced espresso, i only want that splash of milk. as a former partner, i hate how most baristas assume im trying to order an iced latte for cheaper and i have to ask for a remake because they made it as a latte... when i ordered an iced espresso :/
Smallfemdom1 points8m ago
Not unless the boss says something ;)
booboobradley1 points8m ago
No do not rat. Fuck corporate!
Big_Iron991 points8m ago
If someone ordered a venti hot latte with pumps of chai, would you punch it in as a venti hot chai latte with two shots?
Galactic_91 points8m ago
No way! Give them what they ordered, just make sure to use the "splash of milk" measurements. 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4" so it doesn't charge them even with alternative milks. The second they say "Oh like, just milk to the top." I say "Oh okay, well that's actually a latte in that case :)" and ring it up and continue like it is natural. If they ask why,
"Well see when you ask for milk to the top, we have to charge you for a latte. Now if you wanted like, a little more milk than normal we can give you 3/4" w/o charge. But if more than that we have to charge you."
But that's for people who are new to our store or Starbucks in general. Most of the time, our customers know the drill so if they say "Iced espresso with oat milk and toffee nut" we click "Oat milk 1/2", hand them the drink half full with oat milk and espresso, and they say "Thanks, can I get a straw?"
We have never and will never fill an iced espresso "to the top", even if another Starbucks did it, cause they did it wrong and you should tell them next time.
I_love_stapler1 points8m ago
In a grande, I wouldn't care. 3 oz of espresso and 4 oz of milk (what SB allows for free) will fill up a grande if you fill the cup with ice first. I think most baristas overthink this. At the end of the day 1-2oz of milk is not worth you arguing, getting mad, trying to 'educate' the customer etc. It's just not.

Before the Pandemic, lots of stores had Non-fat, 1/2 & 1/2, and other carafes on the condiment bar. Makes no difference to SB when the customer does it themselves. I no longer work at Starbucks, but I prefer my espresso to be pulled directly into an ice cup full of ice. Then I add milk, nowhere near the same amount of milk in a latte.
hautsause1 points8m ago
I don’t want a latte when i order that, just a healthy splash of cream or milk. But if someone does i don’t care it’s not worth our time or mental effort. Just pour the milk.
Charimia1 points8m ago
You know, at one point I would have said correct it. I was a stickler for rules. I quit less than a year ago and not only have prices gotten crazier, but corporate Starbucks has gotten crazier too. I’d say fuck the bux, if people can come up with the same drink cheaper, let them. It’s not like corporate deserves that money, and you really don’t make anything off of correcting it anyway.
WestPossibility19091 points8m ago
No! Definitely not, I’m a supervisor and at my store we deal with this a lot. We can only give 4oz of free milk and that does not fill a grande cup, if they want it full it would be considered an iced latte
Night_787911 points8m ago
Honestly you don’t get anything out of making people pay more money. So I think it’d be nice to just do this for them. Maybe they’re struggling and this is their comfort drink. You never know. I always ask the customer if they want the milk filled to the top (I’ve only had this ordered with alternative milk) so if they do I’ll charge them for the alt milk charge and if not I’ll throw in just a splash. Tbh tho I’d just ask my manager what their opinion is so that your hands are clean

make it to standard unless they ask for extra milk, then just fill it up.
Leo_br00ks1 points8m ago
If I ordered the first drink I’d be pissed if you made it as the second. Lattes are milk overkill
pinpeach1 points8m ago
No, they didn’t order a latte.
RetailBookworm1 points8m ago
It’s not like a keto thing? We’ve had a bunch of weird Leto orders lately that are mostly ice lol.
icanseeyourenuts1 points8m ago
Naw, no point in making something out of nothing.
mcdermottbobby0 points8m ago
As a barista, why should we care how they order it? It’s not worth the argument with them and we don’t get paid enough to dispute it.
bedpan_30 points8m ago
You should just be super petty about it; no shame! People who think they can cheat the system by ordering like that are so annoying. If you make it correctly according to what they ordered, it’d only be 3shots with a splash of milk. If that’s not what they actually want then just inform them and let them know they’ll have to pay for the extra milk. Let them be angry even though you just told them facts, you didn’t do anything wrong. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jewicer1 points8m ago
it wouldn’t be a splash, it’d be anything less than 4oz. also it’s really not that serious and no one doing this is personally attacking you or even thinking we care behind the scenes at all. the fact that it has a triple shot + milk + standard amount of ice, it will probably fill the cup anyway.
