When ringing up a grande shaken espresso, and the customer would like an alternative milk, do you charge them for the milk or not? It's only supposed to be a splash which makes me think that you don't charge?
irritablegarlic66 points8m ago
I find that using the POS system to determine charging or not is the easiest for me. If a milk is highlighted (it glows white) on the left side (example: for a regular latte, 2% milk is highlighted on the left side, but for an americano it is not) I charge. Shaken espressos are highlighted on the left side, so for the classic one I do charge for alt milk. for any of the already alt milk ones they do not charge if you change the milk.

This is the best call IMO

I have never noticed so ima have to try this
DragonTear0320 points8m ago
The app charges for alternative milk so I believe you should as well
lilly260_17 points8m ago
If you order this on the app it charges for the alternative milk, you use more than an inch of milk for this drink so you should charge.
Wonderful-Put-59728 points8m ago
It's only supposed to be a condiment amount of milk
Few_Conclusion_88242 points8m ago
It’s only supposed to be a splash of milk like 1/2 inch or even quarter inch I think the recipe card says. But it is standard to charge for some reason even though we didn’t for the double shot
lilly260_1 points8m ago
Ok yeah that’s weird then i’m not sure why they charge for alt milks
Putrid-Ad-88412 points8m ago
This was in a weekly update shortly after the brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso came out. We are supposed to charge for alternative milks in shaken espressos.
bellamythos10 points8m ago
not 100% sure if this is standard (or if the standard exists in writing), but my very by-the-book SM agrees with you: don’t charge for the milk since it’s just a splash
Hot-Independence86709 points8m ago
this is against standard (i’m 99.9% sure). the way we usually go about it at my store is if the milk selection is highlighted on the left side (like when it’s a latte) then you’re supposed to change it on the left side, which charges. i believe this might’ve been a fairly recent change because i had one customer get mad about it a month or two ago and say they’ve never been charged but my ssv came and told them it was a new policy
bellamythos5 points8m ago
honestly I’ve never really paid attention to that before, but it does make sense - especially if you consider the milk a fundamental component of the shaken espresso, regardless of amount (vs. adding a splash of milk to an americano, which doesn’t get milk by default), and thus charge accordingly.
plus the fact that, as other comments mention, the app charges for milk substitutions (I just checked; you also can’t seem to get around it by adding “creamer” or like 1/2” alt milk). I guess I’m adding it to my list to bring up at the next shift huddle lol
durqandat8 points8m ago
Disclaimer: I am almost sure this is outside of standard but I don’t charge unless the drink is ordered with light ice (and therefore requires more milk).
Responsible_Snow71097 points8m ago
Idk the rule on it but i dont charge because its only supposed to get a splash of it. If u ring up someone for an iced coffee or cold brew or a hot drip coffee and they want an alternative milk in there, u wouldnt charge becuase the base of the drink isnt milk based like a latte (which u would charge for an alternative milk)
So idk the rule on it but i dont charge for it. I will start if im supposed to but i currently dont think its supposed to be charged
Edit: fixed typo
sunshinesugar754 [OP]7 points8m ago
This is my thought process as well, it's only supposed to be a splash of milk. And I literally only want a splash, but 99% of the time my drink is half milk no matter how much I stress just a splash. I'd understand paying the upcharge for a half cup of milk but that is not what the drink is supposed to be, it's supposed to be only a splash, which shouldnt (based on our thinking of "its only a splash") cost extra 🙃
But as someone pointed out, if you order it in the app, it charges you, which I think is silly.
Responsible_Snow71094 points8m ago
Thats so dumb with the app thing. Ive never used the app. I dont really purchase things from starbucks other than just getting the free drinks/foods. So ive never played around with the app but thats dumb to charge for alternative milk splashes in shaken espressos. I dont do it in person if i were to ring someone up in this situation but obviously if its standard and i should be, then i will start doing so theres consistency. But i take it as since we dont charge for splashes of alternative milks in hot or iced coffees or cold brews or americanos or whatever, then why should we for shaken espressos? The app is stupid. Like if someone gets an iced coffee and asks for extra (3/4") of soy milk or oat milk etc, then we dont charge for it when we ring them up so idk why it would be charged for shaken espressos when it gets a literal splash
RumblingMuffins1 points8m ago
The shaken espresso does not have a splash of milk. It is supposed to be filled to the top with milk, which is why they make it with half milk and why they charge for alternative mills.
sunshinesugar754 [OP]4 points8m ago
If you make it properly by vigorously shaking, there's a lot of foam which leaves only a room for a splash. Last time I looked at the recipe card it even said to fill up to 1/4 inch below the top of the cup. If you're filling it half milk then you have a latte, which is not a shaken espresso
Camellia_Sins2 points8m ago
They changed the recipe after it came out to be "filled to the top" rather than "add 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 inch" even shaken vigorously, the majority of people lately have been ordering light ice. So I definitely understand the app upcharging by default (whether I agree and ith it and follow suit or not is a different story)

If it doesn’t come with a alt milk you charge. So the brown sugar oatmilk shaken expresso if they wanted to change to say almond milk it wouldn’t be a charge but the regular shaken espresso would because it comes with 2% milk.

My manager always tells us to charge
csaine1 points8m ago
There was an update put out not long after the brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso came out. We DO charge for alternative milks in the regular shaken espresso.
wok3less-1 points8m ago
it used to be uncharged but when it got popular they changed it charged. so stupud
DragonTear034 points8m ago
I think they started to charge once people started to complain about it only be a splash and not filled to the top
Affogatho2 points8m ago
this tbh. when made properly 95% customers have given attitude about there not being enough milk or God forbid too much foam lol
