my sm isn’t going to be back for four more weeks. i am currently on day two of training my third green bean. i am also… mentally unwell. for the last three or four months (maybe longer), i have been looking for another job. i moved a little over a year ago from socal to a smaller town in nm with not very many job opportunities. it has been very difficult to find something remote, so if i leave the bux, i might have to ask my parents to help in the meantime (which i know they’ll be okay with). being at sbux has amplified my depression to the point where i contemplate walking out & never coming back EVERY single shift. i am debating on putting in my two weeks, but i also know my mental health would be so much better off if i submitted a resignation effective immediately. i know starbucks is an at will employer, but part of me feels bad leaving my team short staffed since i’m one of the stronger morning partners. i also don’t know if i should email my sm while she’s on leave, leave a physical letter in the back & text the manager who’s watching our store, or… i don’t even know. i love my manager & a handful of my partners, but i don’t think i can continue risking my sanity. please help.

Personally, I would put in your two weeks. From what I know, if you quit without notice you’ll be marked in the system as not being rehire-able. That’ll just kinda protect you in case you do decide to come back or end up needing a job more urgently than you thought. If you still want to immediately resign, I wouldn’t worry about messing up coverage. I feel like mostly everyone is used to working understaffed now, it’s just another day.

If you are ready to quit right now, then quit right now. Resigning for your mental health, a better offer, any other reason you can think of, is not an indication of how much you respect your manager or your fellow partners (or your work ethic or your value as a person. Just thought I'd tag these on bc sometimes the depression tells us these kinds of lies). Starbucks doesn't care. Starbucks will manipulate, gaslight, and use you until they can't anymore. Your health is categorically more important than this job. It is not, and never was, your responsibility to be the backbone of the morning crew. Ask yourself, you getting paid for all this extra effort, emotional labor, and worsening mental health? No. No, you are not.

This company is toxic and uses social-emotional ties among partners to guilt people into sacrificing themselves for profits we never see. Get out, now.

thank you SO MUCH. i’ve been a type one diabetic since 2008 & i developed depression in 2012. i was officially diagnosed with clinical depression & anxiety in the beginning of 2018, so everything you said has fully validated how i’ve been feeling. you’re right, i’m not getting paid for my condition worsening at the expense of the siren. i’ll definitely write out my notice asap. thank you again!!

When/if you choose to resign, I would email whoever is currently in charge of your store and also CC your SM on leave. They likely won’t look at it until they return from leave, but this way it’s in their records
