How do I survive as a simultaneous SSV/trainer in training in trying times????? (Desperate) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Cheedanish
After a year and a half at The Bucks I have been promoted from barista to SSV at my store! But oh! God! The place and time! I’m constantly and unmercifully drowning!

My home store is remodeling so I and my other partners have been displaced to other stores in the district for the month. I have followed my SM to train at a store with an extremely high turnover rate for staff on all levels (my SM is actually the proxy for this store while they shop for a permanent manager for the 3rd time this year). And I see why!

Today was my third day of training ever and I have been totally in charge of the peak floor with no guidance from my SM on 2/3 shifts. Luckily there are usually other SSVs on the floor in coverage roles but when I follow their advice it gets me in trouble. On top of that I am training my prerequisite trainee at the same time having never received trainer training either! So needless to say, I would love some advice. Any sort of advice. Especially on playbuilding and balancing my own position on the floor with my duties as a shift. Are there any seasoned SSVs out there that may have some words of advice? Even encouragement. Anything? Helpppppp…

lol that sounds exactly like my store minus the remodeling (I quit on the second week that our proxy SM was in charge of my store). I even had (including the proxy) 3 SMs from Feb-Oct.

My advice: transfer districts or leave. The problem isn’t only the situation you’re in, it’s a DM that isn’t properly checking in with their SMs, that doesn’t read comments in the MyDaily app, that doesn’t check DCRs or schedules that SMs write, it’s SMs that don’t properly communicate with their team, and it’s Sbux’s desperation to get more partners in the store to keep it open.

If you really want to stay, communicate your feelings to your SM. Tell them what you need for success. Don’t make requests, make statements. “I need X to do Y, and here is the reasoning…”

Funny story about our DM! She’s recently on Coffee Break and I have no idea who her replacement is. On top of that, it’s definitely a regional scale issue; I’ve noticed transfers from other areas of the country have a harder time here than transfers from within our region. So transferring out without moving far away is out of the question for me :,)

However i do think I’ll sit down and talk with her. I’ve worked some awful shifts before but these have been some of the most stressful in my time here, and it’s definitely worth bringing to her attention. Thanks for listening and for the validation!!

My district has 9 stores, at least four of which are having new SMs (including two transfers and one who quit). All stores in my district are having retention issues, especially among SSVs.

I was accustomed to working understaffed shifts—that’s the perennial problem with being a closer. However, the last few weeks were literally unworkable between being short staffed and having over 1/3rd of the staff being trainees.

I’d try talking to your SM and see how that goes before making any further decisions. With my SM, these discussions often went nowhere since my SM was both physically absent from the store and unsupportive in general.

I wish you luck!
