Should Meetings Be Paid? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ew_Oxygen1124
I recently had a one-on-one discussion with my SM about a very difficult SSV that most, if not all, of our baristas have had issues with (poor task delegation, anger issues, etc.) and I think it went very well. When I reached out to my SM to find a good time to talk she said she would talk to me “after peak”. Understandable. She talked to one of my other coworkers too, but I noticed she waited until both of us clocked out to have these discussions. Since it was work related and took place in the store, should I have been paid? I’m not trying to scrounge for pennies or anything I just didn’t know what the policy was here. I’m not going to confront her about it or anything just knowledge going forward. It was like a 20 min conversation after my shift where she took notes and asked questions.

Should have definitely been on the clock.

Yes. If this meeting (even if it's a 1on1) was mandatory you should be paid for it.

I initiated it though, so it wasn’t technically mandatory…? I texted her, because she wasn’t previously aware and asked for a time that would be good for her to talk about it in person so it’s fuzzy

Time worked is time paid. I’d write it in the book.

I feel like it’d look bad

How? You asked to talk to the manager and they told you to wait until after peak. When she asked to speak to you after peak, it was after your shift was supposed to end. I doubt this was the reason, but if she waited until you were clocked out to address your concern because she didn’t want you to get paid for it- that’s theft of your time and she could get into a lot of trouble for it.

Nope. Not at all. You stayed, get paid.

Doesn’t sound like it was mandatory. The barista requested it

you 100000% should be paid for that. if it is a discussion about work and took place at the store, you need to be compensated. the next time this happens, tell them that you're gonna clock back in or they can wait until the next time youre on the clock. bc thats hella sketchy.

meetings are always paid. I don’t know why she told you to clock out for it.

Definitely should get paid if you forgot to clock the time just write it in the book, I do that when I have a long discussion after I clocked out.

Definitely should be paid.

Get your money. I’m a manager in a different industry now and I refuse to speak with my team about workplace issues off the clock.

Should absolutely be on the clock.

Yes. You should’ve been paid for the meeting. I’d put it in the book or ask a shift whether you were supposed to be paid or not. Most shifts I’ve worked with will take initiative if you’re uncomfortable doing so :)

You should have been paid. I’ve had quick work-related comments turn into long work-related conversations after clocking out and my SM edits my time so that I’m being paid for it.

yes, paid. Time worked is time paid.
