Can I work at Starbucks if I’ve never used a coffee maker before?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Tizzytizzerson
I’ve never drank coffee, never made coffee, and I don’t even know how to make coffee. I could watch videos on how to make it, but I know the machines in the store are different and I’m more of a hands-on learner. Regardless, I’m interested in working at Starbucks after hearing some good things about it. Could I still work there despite my complete lack of coffee knowledge?

Absolutely. I never have and I don't drink coffee. You can always ask your coworkers about coffees when a customer asks something so you can learn more about the flavors and tastes

Yes you will be taught all the necessary information at a good pace and by the end you will be a pro barista

It helps if you're willing to drink it (makes coffee tastings a lot less awkward), but I went from nothing to expert during my time.
Brewing at the store is different anyways, need to learn how much coffee to use, how to use the grinder, where the filters go, how to prevent the filter from falling into the grinds, how the urns work, etc.. You'll be fine.

Of course! There were partners at my store who didn’t ever make drinks, but instead opted to run the drive thru or front counter

They teach you how to operate all the machines. Their espresso machines are different from most coffee shops. We've had people who had zero knowledge and still got hired. I've had mutiple people that didn't know how to sweep a floor, wipe off a table, change a trash can, or wash dishes. When you learn how to make drinks we encourage you to taste everything so then you can speak on what you like. But we do have an employee that can't have caffeine and basically only drinks water. And they're a good barista.

yep! before starbucks, i'd only ever tried coffee once or twice and i hated it! (still do tbh, i'm a tea kinda guy). i did not know anything about coffee - let alone what a latte, flat white, etc was!) everything you need to know about coffee would be taught in training! ppl come into starbucks with wildly different experiences with coffee, and having 0 experience at all is just as okay!
when hiring, starbucks puts a big emphasis on wanting to hire people who have the best attitude and mindset! things like how to make drinks can all be taught. being a good worker cant be taught in the same way :)

For sure. They teach you everything from the ground up.

Oh don't worry, we don't assume any level of coffee knowledge. It's available to learn if you want it but honestly we mostly serve sugar now.
