starbucks paying for gender affirming care?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by cynicosm
i recently had a fellow transgender partner tell me that starbucks pays for gender affirming surgeries (like top surgeries, etc). i am transgender (pre-operation) and have insurance through starbucks, but i thought i still had a copay for any surgeries, including gender affirming surgeries? can anyone confirm or deny before i contact sbuxben myself? thanks!

so here’s the back story
before Oct. 1st, 2022, Starbucks had insurance plans that did not cover certain surgeries that were deemed cosmetic. What partners would do, is they would purposely choose those insurance plans that denied surgeries deemed cosmetic. What would happen next is that Starbucks would kick in the Supplemental Insurance, and would actually foot the entire bill after receiving the denial letter for your surgeries.
HOWEVER, Starbucks has changed their policy. They now only carry insurance plans that cover surgeries that were once deemed cosmetic and denied, so now these surgeries aren’t denied and Starbucks will no longer use the Supplemental Insurance in these cases.
Now it’s basically your regular ol insurance plan. That’s a big reason a lot of trans partners left and outraged. Basically another big F U to all the partners from corporate.

Yes! I had this conversation with my manager a few months back before I enrolled in benefits. You should review your benefit package, I know that in Canada it is covered to a certain sum (I think it was like 10k? I'd have to check again). It can go towards covering hrt, surgery, etc. I haven't used it yet personally but it is part of why I'm still working here

Very different process in the states. Private insurance will cover the majority of things but they have to be performed by an in-network doctor and jump through certain hoops to meet WPATH standards before approval
