We aren’t allowed to take trash out after dark??? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ManufacturerOk5442
idk how true this is, but we’ve been having an issue where our trash bins are FULL in the morning. Our night crew no longer makes our backups or preps us for the morning as they are supposed to “focus on cleaning”. So obviously the full trash bins are becoming a problem because no one has the time to do a trash run until after peak. And that’s A TON more trash on top of the trash that was left over from the night before.
heyitsme963 271 points 8m ago
It’s a safety issue. Same as taking trash out before the sun rises: we aren’t supposed to do it but when we have to, we do it in pairs and with our headsets on.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 109 points 8m ago
Don’t admit to this out loud, you could get written up or separated.
heyitsme963 52 points 8m ago
Our SM is usually the second person on our pre-sunrise trash runs, so I’ll be fine, but I agree that this isn’t something we should be doing and it doesn’t happen often.
The_walking_man_ 27 points 8m ago
Incident happens, i wouldn’t count on your SM sticking their neck out to protect your job.
Your SM may be “cool” but it’s not worth the risk.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 21 points 8m ago
This! Years ago when I worked in a grocery store I got thrown under the bus because I did exactly as I was told and got injured but I was who got written up for using equipment I wasn’t ‘certified’ on. Even tho the manager literally just told me to use it.
heyitsme963 9 points 8m ago
I’ll be real here: I don’t do it, my coworkers do. I’m too much of a wuss after someone tried to open my car door as I was waiting to open one day.

Honestly? No, it wouldn’t be okay to ask someone else to break rules. You could ask them to schedule a trash run before sunset, but that doesn’t guarantee they’ll be able to if they’re busy.
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] -2 points 8m ago
yeah that’s what I was thinking…thanks for giving me info on this tho! much appreciated!
esaeklsg 20 points 8m ago
I imagine the by-the-books answer is your SM sould be staffing enough right before sundown and right after sun up to do trash runs. You could discuss it with them.
MasterMischievous 6 points 8m ago
That’s so petty. There’s plenty of time before close to do it. If you’re feeling like you aren’t staffed enough to take the trash out talk to your SM. Can’t believe a “partner” is suggesting our partners do trash runs after dark, it’s literally considered dangerous.
Few_Conclusion_8824 5 points 8m ago
They can do it before Sunset if they really wanna stick to standard that bad
coffee-hoee 2 points 8m ago
what about before peak?
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] 3 points 8m ago
we usually only have 2 partners and our SSV right until 6:30, typically we just have a bunch of back ups and restock to do..so most of the time our hands are pretty tied. I’m sure there’s probably definitely sometime we could manage within that 30 min tho. it’s just something I guess I wasn’t mindful of until now.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 59 points 8m ago
It’s a huge safety issue. In my city alone I can name several instances of people taking the trash out after dark and getting murdered. (Not bux specific, one was a local BBQ place and another was a Popeyes)
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] -49 points 8m ago
Yeah, I absolutely get the safety issues! I guess I’m just having trouble understanding why the solution was to entirely cut out taking out the trash at night. The trash not being taken out definitely affects my store operationally since we’re so high volume. I used to work at CFA and their solution to the safety issues was to have us wear a lanyard with a panic button on it that calls the police if anything was to happen. We also had to have a manager watch us take the trash out from the door. Granted, I know there’s a lot that can vary depending on your location but I just feel like there could’ve been a better solution
ElijahLordoftheWoods 52 points 8m ago
They aren’t intentionally not taking it out, I guarantee you that. Maybe the question you should be asking is why isn’t mid leaving close with empty cans.
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] 15 points 8m ago
valid point, definitely falls on all day parts not just night
ElevatorsAreScary 9 points 8m ago
It’s a safety issue. End of discussion. Not safe to have people taking trash out after dark, same with early morning before sunrise. Also two people in the store at all times, we always have only 3 for our preclose and close, I get that it’s frustrating but there is no solution here other than more labour at night. Everytime I raise the more labour at night thing, it gets shut down my morning shifts who say they need to labour more. So that to your SM about scheduling more people at night, or that’s just gonna be how it is. But saying that sending partners out alone in the dark with a panic button that calls police is ridiculous. None of our partners should ever be in a situation that requires then to do dangerous things with a panic button only.

Be willing to loose some morning labour, or don’t I guess
uwumoment 7 points 8m ago
lmfaoo cfa is such a joke they gave me that button once in my entire 2 years of being there 🤭
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] -2 points 8m ago
yikessss I mean I know a lot differs from each location but I would’ve had my ass handed to me if I didn’t go outside wearing the lanyard😭
uwumoment 4 points 8m ago
they really didn’t care about that fr, the one instance i wore it was because some man was harassing me from afar when i was outside on handheld. but i mean we had electric heating jackets so it made up for it
marigshu 6 points 8m ago
When the sun is no longer out we are not allowed to do trash runs. We do safety and security training on this all of the time.
hey-its-me-again123 6 points 8m ago
Idk why you got so downvoted on this comment???
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] 4 points 8m ago
me neither🤷‍♀️
suhoatmeal_ 9 points 8m ago
I am giving you the benefit of the doubt that this isn’t what you meant, but the comment in question does read like “I understand that taking trash out at night is a safety issue but I don’t understand why that means my closing crew can’t take trash out at night.” From your other comments I’ve gleaned that you’re probably talking about sbux policy as whole, but I was taken a bit aback when I first read your comment as it seemed like you don’t care about your closing crew’s safety, so down voters might’ve thought the same
esaeklsg 58 points 8m ago
Always been a rule afaik, but I've never known a single store to follow it. I feel like it's a safety issue they've been sued over / liable for but also haven't actually designed stores/staffing around the problem.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 39 points 8m ago
Problem is it’s a health code violation (at least where I am) to leave trash in the building overnight. It has to be moved to the dumpster
esaeklsg 17 points 8m ago
Yknow, now that you mention it, that sounds familiar too. I guess that makes the by the books answer "business isn't allowed to be open after sundown" lol.

That being said, I know I've seen the Starbucks safety policy written down, but on a quick google I don't see the health code violation one. Mostly I just see a lot about making sure the lids are closed. But that stuff's pretty dense and varies by area, so idk.
uwumoment 34 points 8m ago
i stg morning crew used to always bitch when closing crew left 1-3 bags of trash, it’s not our fault we can’t break the rules so we have to leave it outside
cailey001 26 points 8m ago
Correct. But my store is very busy and we managed to take out most trash and leave very little. We would take out ALL trash in the store before sunset and then condense to only one or two for the rest of the night. That way at close we’d have a few trashes in the bin but it was never overflowing or anything.
lewabwee 8 points 8m ago
I’m usually able to do this in the summer but winter is a different story. It’s busier and the sun goes down earlier.
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] 2 points 8m ago
that’s actually a really good idea, I’m definitely gonna suggest that!
captainsasss 23 points 8m ago
“Focus on cleaning” sounds like u don’t think cleaning the store is an easy task. It’s not easy and is very time consuming. It’s in training videos u are not to take trash out at night and someone should be sent out regularly throughout the day to take trash out even during peak because an overflowing trash can is a health violation.
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] 4 points 8m ago
sorry it wasn’t meant to sound like I was trying to say that the closers necessarily have it easy. or that cleaning itself is easy. That’s just specifically what my SM said. I understand now that it’s for the safety of my partners not to take trash out after dark, it was just confusing for me because I just assumed emptying out the trash would be included in cleaning. that’s on me for assuming.
budsandrainbowsss 18 points 8m ago
You mean you don’t have the giant STOP sign on your back door?
starfire03 9 points 8m ago
Depending on where your dumpster is located, the way I got around that rule was as everyone left for the night we all took a bag of garbage out to the dumpster because it was in the parking lot in front of the store (my store closed at 10 most nights). But like someone else said, don't try to suggest to other people to break the rules.
UncleJeffe 6 points 8m ago
This also isn't the best workaround because you're not on the clock nor getting paid to take out garbage, therefor the company isn't liable for you. Say you pick up the bathroom trash and get stuck by a heroin needle? Not the companies problem if you're off the clock.
ckrhee 5 points 8m ago
But also… why work for free.
FrustratingBears 6 points 8m ago
our dumpster is all the way around the store and our neighboring store, and the guy we had to have trespassed for harassing our baristas (even minors) hangs out back there

no, i’m not taking out the trash after sundown
starfire03 3 points 8m ago
Which fair. I was lucky my last store had the dumpster next to the DT lane in front of the store. I don't blame you.
ElevatorsAreScary 6 points 8m ago
Can’t take trash out after dark. Or have to be in pairs, but the store always has to have two people and most closes are done with 3, so no late trash runs. It’s a safety thing. In my store area there’s a large homeless population, and they’ve never been aggressive or mean, but you never know who’s hanging around in the dark
laneyyrosee 6 points 8m ago

my store isn’t allowed to go outside after dark period bc a starbs nearby had a partner get mugged when taking trash out at night 😍
wok3less 6 points 8m ago
i would push more so on them doing backups at night (and i say this as a night shift) because of the safety issue. whats night staffing like? i usually start breakdown about 4 hours before close and included in that is drains, all backups, etc
Swan97 6 points 8m ago
Yeah I feel like there's more going on. Cause when I worked there I would always prioritize backups since that would take the most time. Trashes we did as we left so that wasn't an issue either. The only days that we left stuff for opening to do was if we were left trying to play catchup the whole shift. Like sometimes morning shift would leave us with 0 backups, 1 whip, a mountain if dishes, and all the trashes full. When that happened it was hit or miss if we'd be able to get everything done. Especially since at our store closing shift is staffed to the bare minimum if people
wok3less 1 points 8m ago
sounds about my store lolol
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] 1 points 8m ago
yeah that’s how it used to be, but my SM said they specifically wanted them to focus on deep cleaning the store so backups and restocking were now on the openers. which I absolutely understand the point of deep cleaning but it also generates a lot of trash too🫠
wok3less 0 points 8m ago
do you guys do weekly cleanplay??
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] 3 points 8m ago
yeah but lately I guess they’ve only been scheduling one person to do the clean plays, which typically we schedule at least 3 people
socalsailor027 2 points 8m ago
Do you not do a clean play when closed, per standard? Because you can’t have just one person doing it
peachiez_ 4 points 8m ago
we can’t take it out to the dumpsters after sundown, it’s a safety issue no matter if you’re in the middle of buttfuck nowhere or a huge city. when i close, we’ll gather all the trash and put them in the big trash cans outside the back door, but that’s the most we’ll do. ask your closing SSVs to do that :)
linguicaaaa 4 points 8m ago
hm when i worked there, i definitely remember that our SM would make one of us take the garbage to the bins after closing (which was around 9)
HarleySpicedLatte 2 points 8m ago
1 hour before dark actually
tang0foxtr0t 2 points 8m ago
if it’s a really big issue you need to discuss with the night shifts (and probably your SM) to make sure a trash run is done before sundown. that’s the only real solution. cleaning and backups are also important, but so is not having trash pile up.
trbpanda 2 points 8m ago
if you dont have time to take the trash out till after peak, take it out when you open. it takes maybe 5 minutes tops? i understand it could be busy at your store from open onwards but you have to be considerate of your partners that work at night. it's literally a question of safety for your partners at night.
miniinovaa 3 points 8m ago
It’s dark when we open .? Lmao
ManufacturerOk5442 [OP] 3 points 8m ago
I’m sorry, it wasn’t meant to come across in a way that seemed like I didn’t care about my partners. I absolutely do which is why I was just trying to figure out what the standard was, so I wasn’t causing issues over things that are out of their control. It’s also something I could be more mindful of as an opener.
scmfckwaido 1 points 8m ago
Taking trash after dark is the only standard that my manager turns a blind eye to. It makes me so salty that we have to do a trash run after it’s dark bc otherwise we will get yelled at
Luna_Raccoona 1 points 8m ago
I’m a closer. I’m not aloud to take trash out at night tho I wouldn’t put it past the morning crew to complain to our SM who loves them so so dearly and be asked to anyway. But that’s a task I would outright refuse. I live somewhere where heroin and hard drug use are like real big problems. The odds of getting mugged and/or worse for drug money is probably pretty high. Not to mention we don’t have a dumpster, we have a trash compactor. And if you think I’m hanging around a trash compactor at night with no one around to help me if I fall in, you are seriously mistaken
Spacemarine2142 1 points 8m ago
When I started working in 2015 this was the case.... but still ran trash at 2am. Continued the tradition of breaking this standard until 2021 when I left the company.

SMs would get after you if you didnt (even though it was a safety issue.) Id ask for volunteers when I was a shift and if no one wanted to, I would. DMs were buddy buddy with morning shift so the only ones who may of helped our situation would have been Partner Resources. That would of caused a deeper issue.
awkward_cat_man_ 1 points 8m ago
I have shifts that take the trash out after dark and some that follow the rules and don’t. I remember still a green bean and taking the trash out at like 11
darkwolf523 1 points 8m ago
That’s a safety concern
eye-brows 1 points 8m ago
At my old store, we closed at 11. In the winter, the sun set at like 5:00, so we never heard of nor followed that rule.
rudebii 1 points 8m ago
This was a rule 20 years ago as well. At one store I work at briefly the bins were directly in front of the store 2 car lengths away, so we always broke the rule on closes. Our parking lot was well lit and during trash runs the chipotle 3 doors down was always busy (with cops there. What is it with cops eating so much chipotle anyway?) so it wasn’t that unsafe to do a trash run solo.
canidieyet_ 2 points 8m ago
same situation with our store. we don’t take trash out after sundown, but if we absolutely have to we just prop the door open and have someone stand and watch
rudebii 2 points 8m ago
I dunno how closing is now, but in my day as a close lead, I got two baristas. I worked in suburbia hell where nothing happens after dark. If I had to send both my baristas to do trash runs, I'd get shit for taking too long to close or for not doing enough.

A lot of times I'd do the trash runs so I could get a quick smoke break since I almost never got my tens. If the close was all smokers, we'd take turns on trash runs so we'd all get an extra smoke break out of it.
Midieval -6 points 8m ago
You are allowed to go in a pair. We do it before the fourth person leaves at night, usually around 7 or 8, so there’s still two people in the building and two going to the dumpster together. You don’t even need to wear a headset either.

Then we do what needs to be done after closing, in a group of 3 (we always have 3 closing).
marigshu 7 points 8m ago
