How to be faster at doing things? I really need some advice (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by HungryLymphocyte
Hi everyone,

I'm nearing the end of my barista training and I'm progressing okay. But I'm way too slow, especially when closing the bar and making the sandwiches in the morning. The shift supervisors and my trainer are constantly telling me to hurry it up, and I try my best but it's still not enough. We're supposed to make all the sandwiches in an hour and I can never do it, the ssv takes over and sends me to the register instead. I received some advice from all of the partners, I know they want to help but I feel like I'm not getting better. I'm really afraid I will be fired for this.

One partner said that I shouldn't stress about it because this is something that will only come with practice but I know my trainer is pretty upset with me.

Have any of you struggled with this? Do you have any tips on how to get faster?

Thank you!! And also sorry if I made any mistakes, english is not my native language.

thats shitty that your ssvs and barista trainer treat you like that when they know damn well that it takes time to get faster.

Especially because they’re yk supposed to be “training” them and helping them get “faster” 🙄 should learn to be a good trainer first honestly

in my experience it’s all about multitasking. i try to always have a side task going on while i do something . like for the sandwich example, i would have both ovens being used at once, as well as the sandwiches that still need to go in the oven on parchment paper ready to go so it’s just a bunch of taking out and putting in . multitasking has saved my life! hope that helps

ooh I just remembered something! I've read here once that in the us the sandwiches come in premade and frozen, is that true? bc here (central europe) we have to assemble all the sandwiches manually

this is FLABBERGASTING to me!
you are 100% correct. we receive all the sandwiches individually plastic wrapped and frozen. they are then thawed and we just open the packaging and put it directly into the oven. I cannot even imagine how much it would slow me down if I had to make every single sandwich as it was ordered.

We don't have to make them as they are ordered thankfully! We just make one huge batch in the morning and one in the afternoon. Sorry for not being clear enough!

Wow!! I bet your sandwiches are better quality in Central Europe, but—I am astonished that you make them in your store. The Sandwiches are certainly pre-made and delivered to my store in the USA already made for us.

Some US stores have frozen sandwiches, others have refrigerated ones that are delivered daily! They are ALL premade!

If you’re just finishing barista training it’s reasonable you’re not that fast yet. If you go 3 months without improving at all then starbucks probably isn’t the right fit for you. Improvement over time is key.
