How many hours are you getting? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Hebbianlearning
Is it typical to get 20 hours or even fewer scheduled each week? Seems like the stores around here (Triangle region of NC) hire more workers than they need, and then let us fight it out to pick up extra shifts where we can. Virtually no one I've talk to gets a scheduled 40 hours a week.

Baristas are part time positions. Only SSVs and ASMs are full-time (40 hrs)

In my district, my SM will actually have to explain it to corporate if she allows me to work 40hrs in a week.

i guess it really depends on your manager and store. im a barista and i get anywhere from 35-39 hours

Same—but that still counts as part time. Anything under 40 hours, is legally “part time.”

After obama-care was passed, most companies eliminated full-time positions, (literally had my first boss tell me this) because the high-cost of benefits they are legally required to pay full-time employees potentially dips into profit margin.

So what companies did, was reduce full-time positions to 39.75 hours, so they can get the same amount of work, without paying the benefits, and they hire worse workers to cover a little bit of time to make up the difference.

This isn’t true for starbucks. Benefits kick in at 20 hours. It makes no difference if someone works 20 or 40 benefits wise.

That is true, Starbucks is an exception to that rule, however, it is listed in their info about the Barista position that it is a part-time position (ie—under 40 hrs)
