Am I able to call off for this? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mdf200316
i had a panic attack before I went to bed and as a result could barely get any sleep at all and I just feel so mentally drained and exhausted and I know I wouldn’t be able to make it through my shift (starts at 9AM, currently 4:30AM) and I know my anxiety won’t let me fall back asleep, I just don’t know if I’m able to call off for this reason and I’d feel so bad but I just can’t do it today but then I’d feel so guilty because I was trying to find people to switch my shift with yesterday and I don’t want them to think I’m calling off just because
neilgreenbreen 246 points 8m ago
Just tell them you puked. Don’t bring mental health or other illness symptoms into it, it’ll only invite prying and coercion to come in anyway. “I vomited about 10 minutes ago” is all you need to say
gabby24681 73 points 8m ago
This. They aren’t even allowed to ask why you’re calling out. But obviously you’re still gonna feel like you need to say and this is a good go to that shuts down any further questions.
Witchatah101 30 points 8m ago
Wait. They aren't allowed to ask? When I said "I'd rather not say" I got so much backlash from lead and SM.
gabby24681 32 points 8m ago
Ok I didn’t find much info on actually calling in sick, but did confirm you can use your sick pay for mental health reasons:
“Can I use Sick Time for mental health days?

Our Partner & Family Sick Time policy recognizes mental health as a critical part of your overall health. Just as you may need an immediate day off or to schedule a future day off to address a physical health concern, you may also have an immediate or future need to care for your mental health…
Every partner will be different in what works for them, and we encourage you to use Partner & Family Sick Time for all aspects of your health and wellbeing.”

I am not a lawyer, but this is what I’ve believed to be true from what I’ve heard from other partners and I think I read it somewhere but I honestly can’t give you proof. I’m very confident in it though lol.
neilgreenbreen 20 points 8m ago
We have been told to ask for symptoms purely for the purposes of tracking foodborne illness. That’s why I tell people to say they’re vomiting. I personally would never ask a partner to come in while sick, but other SSVs would and have depending on the symptoms
lewabwee 2 points 8m ago
In the US they’re definitely allowed to ask. If you have and use sick hours they can’t take action against you but even then asking is allowed. If nothing else, and there are other reasons, it would be really wild if they weren’t allowed to ask if you have a foodborne illness.

You could always not answer. If you have sick hours you’re good. If not they might use your refusal to answer against you if you call out often. But they’re always allowed to ask even if they can’t make you answer. I can’t imagine they’d get in trouble for backlash either. I’d leave it be, personally, but that doesn’t mean it’s systemically protected.
Party-Cat-3605 2 points 8m ago
They're definitely allowed to ask.

Someone calling out because they're mildly sick is a huge difference from Someone calling out because their spouse is having a medical emergency and going to be the hospital for a few days.

One says OK, you'll be back tomorrow. The other says, do we need to find coverage for a few days?

We had someone call out, refuse to give a reason and then continued to call out for a couple weeks.

Apparently her mom died. I understand thats terribly difficult, but she could have gotten breivence days and/or taken a LOA. Nobody can help you if you don't let them.
KableKyle 1 points 8m ago
It isn’t work related, so no! They can’t do anything about it
aee78 1 points 8m ago
We can ask. My state as much stricter limitations on what we can ask. I can only ask if it's sick or personal. We could get in trouble for pressing for details of your illness. There are 6 food borne illnesses I'm supposed to report to the health department if you have them. So I can't ask, but I guess you're supposed to call back and tell me if you have Norovirus or Hep A. I also remember Shigella. I think Salmonella and Listeria are included but not 100%. Usually my only follow up question when someone is calling out sick, is if they think they'll be good for the following shift or should I try to find coverage for it too.
peepeepoopaccount 38 points 8m ago
Just don’t tell them. Say you threw up or something they have to let you call off
overturned23 36 points 8m ago
Yes you are to call off to take care of your mental health.
caughtyoulookinn 17 points 8m ago
Damn I wish that you all find better jobs that treat you better and definitely get a raise. We have specific days we can take off for mental health days along with unlimited PTO. Please know other jobs are out there that you don’t need a degree and could probably get with retail experience
chamorrobro 7 points 8m ago
No degree and unlimited PTO?? What gig is this bestie?? Also, I’m sure you need approval for the PTO, but I’ve only heard of those types of policies in relation to like boomin tech companies. That company sounds INCREDIBLE
caughtyoulookinn 4 points 8m ago
Realistically it is a boomin design/kinda tech company. Deals with lights. And I have to submit my PTO for approval but my manager doesn’t even check it I have like 5 outstanding ones for approval lol
spookstermcdude 9 points 8m ago
echoing everyone else. lie about being sick. everyone does it. we dont get mental health days, even when we really need them.
ElevatorsAreScary 7 points 8m ago
You gotta get that anxiety under control. Seriously, therapy is a life saver coming from another panic attack sufferer. Benefits cover a bit, but also we get the headspace app for free, so download it, use it, it help too.

If you are feeling sick/unwell and unable to support the team, or make good customer connections, then I’d say it’s a good reason to call off.

Seriously tho, give some serious thought to addressing what is making you feel like this. I’ve been on medication now for a year and it’s life changing
mdf200316 [OP] 17 points 8m ago
I’ve been on my newest depression medication for about two months now and just started a new anxiety one a week and a half ago, the last time I’ve ever called off was in March, so I figured it would be fine just for today since it’s been so long and i genuinely don’t think I could be much help for the floor, my new ASM picked up and she was understanding and told me to take care of myself so that’s a relief but I just feel so guilty still but at least I won’t have the stress of work
Party-Cat-3605 2 points 8m ago
I'm so happy she was supportive and understanding. I know unfortunately managers (in general retail/food service) can be awful when someone calls out.
ILoveFroyo444 1 points 8m ago
Yes this! Headspace is such a nice app definitely try it
mdf200316 [OP] 3 points 8m ago
I’ve just downloaded it, obviously get the small trial for free but any idea how to access with our benefits or is that something I’d need to ask my SM about
Firm-Ant7684 3 points 8m ago
If you google “headspace and Starbucks partnership” it should pop up, that’s how I found it! If you use it less then once a month I believe you lose it though (could be wrong about that last part though) Good luck and take care of yourself!
DragMeThroughHell 1 points 8m ago
You can also find it through the benefits page on my partner benefits

Yes, we can call out for mental health days. They even brought this up in a weekly update recent ish, a couple months ago maybe. If anyone give you shit about it, consider contacting PCC.
ksdg1214 3 points 8m ago
Do you know how many times I’ve done this? Just say you’re sick or vomiting or have a migraine.
Traditional-Emu-1403 1 points 8m ago
You don’t feel well and aren’t in a condition to work. They don’t need to know anything. If they push you then say “I have diarrhea, since you keep asking.” They’ll shut up.
BlackHollowGhoul24 1 points 8m ago
I'd say definitely call in sick, but if you can, I'd recommend getting a doctor's note for mental health reasons so that maybe you can at least get some days off for recovery, you definitely want to take care of your own mental well-being!
Hazel_is_Trans 1 points 8m ago
I wished I called out because I only had 2 hours of sleep for same reason
quique772 -4 points 8m ago
Ever heard of redbulls?👀
DustbinFunkbndr -23 points 8m ago
In an ideal world, absolutely that would be a justifiable reason to call off. In the current world with its current standards, really think long and hard about this. You will be harming your reputation and perceived reliability. This isn't fair or right but its true. There are times your best bet is going to be to go into work feeling like absolute shit (as you should, Ive been there and dealing with mental health issues and lack of rest is absolutely brutal) and letting your SM or SSV know you had a really rough night and that you're sorry if your performance is lacking; also is valid to let them know you would really appreciate if there was any way you could be let go early if the day allows or if anyone else is looking for hours.

I'm really sorry you're experiencing this and I hope your store is understanding and accommodating. Love to you and yours.

it is STARBUCKS. it does not fucking matter lol
DustbinFunkbndr -1 points 8m ago
Correct! It’s Starbucks! They aren’t going to give a fuck about OP and their needs. Op is going to look unreliable and more disposable and should be prepared to have a harder time due to the awful company culture
InformalDog1759 1 points 8m ago
so why should they care 😭 it’s a shitty $15/hr job and i’m sure OP isn’t trying to move up in the company. starbucks is fucking awful and calling off one shift when they said they haven’t called off since march isn’t going to harm them. that’s why they give sick time and PTO
DustbinFunkbndr 1 points 8m ago
If they need this job specifically. I figured if they didn’t care or need this job then they wouldn’t come to a forum like Reddit looking for answers to this kind of question
ElijahLordoftheWoods 5 points 8m ago
This is bad advice. We are 100% allowed and encouraged to take mental health days.

I can understand what you are saying about coping and support mechanisms to manage chronic issues. If you made a post with examples of ways you use similar strategies to cope with mental health, and ways you support your suffering partners, it could potentially be helpful and inspiring. But it is not appropriate to voice this unsolicited “advice” to OP right now.

Suggesting that someone should choose to suffer for a company that views them as a replaceable “shell” makes zero sense logically. If they are so low value to the company, than they have much less incentive to enslave their well-being to a broken system.
Zachflo1 -16 points 8m ago
Call off, but promise you will never use the word “exhausted” again. Your life will improve by a measure of 10.

please explain how the usage of “exhausted” is incorrect here?
Zachflo1 -2 points 8m ago
Some people use exhausted to cover for being tired and not wanting to put in the effort to do a job. While someone that is truly exhausted is unable to move, in the fetal position on the floor. Which one is OP?
ElijahLordoftheWoods 7 points 8m ago
Lol you know nothing about anxiety

You have no idea what OP is going through in their personal life, other than what you have read on this post. You sound extremely dense.
