Sorry this is semi-long. So I got my paycheck last week, and I realized my manager forgot to log in one of my shifts. I bought it to his attention and at first he offered to do a pay out. But I didn’t like that he wasn’t sure how much to give me and it also didn’t make sense that he told me I’d have to pay him back for it. So he said he’d do an off cycle paycheck, I was fine with this. The next Friday rolled around, and I never got it. Turns out he forgot again, even after I reminded him about it. Then he gives me $100 from his wallet and said to just pay him back next week when the next paycheck rolls around. This feels wrong to me because when he gave me the money he said we don’t have to involve the company. Something else that feels sus to me is that when I first bought this to his attention he said “you’re probably just missing like $65-$70” the second time he said around $75 but then he hands me a $100. This just feels wrong to me and I need a second opinion.

the money needs to be on your paycheck. he shouldn’t have given you his own money it needs to come from wherever your regular pay check is from. that is really weird of your manager and it would make more sense to just add it on top of your next paycheck, you know?
Accomplished-Claim94 [OP]37 points8m ago
Yea when I first mentioned it to him I asked for it to be before the next paycheck because it’s what’s owed to me, and I know he’s lousy enough to just wait till the next one. I also don’t trust him doing a payout because he seemed unsure with how much he owed me, so the off cycle paycheck gave me the most reassurance. But when it never came he didn’t mention anything about adding it to the next paycheck, he just opened his wallet and gave me the money and told me to pay him back when I get my next paycheck.

You absolutely need to report this to HR and to ethics
gabby2468132 points8m ago
Yeah sounds like he went over on hours or something and doesn’t wanna get in trouble
neilgreenbreen94 points8m ago
Call PCC and ethics. This is not policy and is probably lowkey illegal
SelocAvrap21 points8m ago
> is probably lowkey illegal
Yes, it's straight up wage theft
SlowThePath11 points8m ago
The not having a recorded in and out time while actually doing work for a whole shift is 100% illegal. I don't know how the manager giving the employee their own money to make up for it would play out legally, but Starbucks certainly would not like it one bit. Manager taking a big risk by even doing it. The whole thing is hella shady.
vegan-trash4 points8m ago
This! It’s weird. You’ve gotta cover yourself because what the actual fuck is that shit
RosieHarlan63 points8m ago
It is sus and you’re not even getting what’s yours if you have to pay him back $100 after your next check. He can log an extra shift into the next pay roll no problem. Additionally since you’re short a logged shift then you’re also being shorted on tips. I would bring it to partner resources attention.
Comfortable-Plane94421 points8m ago
Yea I would report this to ethics and compliance. This is shady AF
Responsible_Snow710915 points8m ago
What a moron. Why would he say u have to pay him back? The whole issue is that u are owed money for time worked. There should be no "paying back" which means the money shouldnt come from him but instead from the company. Was he high? Cuz this is really odd for him to say and do

Responsible_Snow71096 points8m ago
No i kno he was doing it as "here im fronting u so u pay me back" but im saying there should be no "pay me back" because its not ethical for this to come out of his own pocket to OP. It should come straight from the company so the "pay me back" thing shouldnt be happening in the first place. Sorry if it was worded weirdly. I had quite the day today 🙃
clouds183-4 points8m ago
op didn’t want it to come directly from the company when they denied a payout from the cash drawer.
Responsible_Snow71097 points8m ago
No the manager didnt want to get the company involved. OP never said anything about themselves not wanting it from the company

OP thought it was suspect to offer cash from managers own wallet or from the register since the manager wasnt sure how much exactly is owed
testingaurora10 points8m ago
I dont get Wht you're paying him back if you're owed payment for a shift.
Nachos_are_Great7 points8m ago
When it feels sus, it’s probably cus it’s sus. Report it.
daisy481897 points8m ago
That’s not right at all…
Party-Cat-36056 points8m ago
I have a question- did you write the shift in the punch communication log?
If so, go back and look at it. Did he intial and date it?
If so, take a picture of it. That's a legal document right there.
lewabwee3 points8m ago
Hahaha what the fuck
Torirock103 points8m ago
fuck no report that shit
jorddansk3 points8m ago
The fact that this post is about a company as big as Starbucks…Jesus.
Ashleybux2 points8m ago
Did you write this in the punch communications?
vanilllacakez2 points8m ago
Bruh why would you pay him back for money Starbucks owes you. He shouldn’t be taking random estimates from his own money to pay you lmao
Impressive-Coast-1582 points8m ago
Everything about this is suspicious as hell. Any time a boss says that the company doesn't need to get involved, you can bet it does.
imuyBonita2 points8m ago
That’s sus AF. I would call PCC and make a report. Be sure to give them all the details and know the dates to reference back to.
Brief_Coat65261 points8m ago
Yeah that’s sus for sure kind of illegal
Jfostr01 points8m ago
I would a absolutely go over the managers head with this because it something that needs to be handled in a proper way to make sure everyone gets what due to them(your wages, taxes, tips etc) since this manager is clearly incapable AND unwilling to take the correct action.
Don’t let them shove you off to the side!!
neighborhoodswamphag1 points8m ago
he should absolutely log those hours and have it show up on your paycheck. He can’t just pay you under the table and then tell you to pay him back. That’s sketchy AF and not your responsibility. Not to mention, could get both of you in serious trouble. I’ll call PCC and ethics if no one has said that already
FlowerCurious5811 points8m ago
Report to ethics
clouds183-11 points8m ago
you’re all misunderstanding. the sm is going to add your shift to your next pay cycle but you wanted it right that moment and didn’t want to borrow from the till so your sm is letting you borrow from them. you’re going to get paid your next check for that shift. calm down.
ElijahLordoftheWoods17 points8m ago
No. That’s not how this works. It *has to* be an off cycle filed ASAP. The SM can’t do what they did, it’s against policy
Babs92203 points8m ago
But the manager already didn't add it to their paycheck twice now, they just want it done right and done asap because it's been so long already.
clouds183-6 points8m ago
its called patience. I waited months for tips once because of issues. some things just take repeated reminders and following up. op didn’t have the patience so the sm loaned her money. its not against policy to give someone a loan.
Babs92202 points8m ago
But the manager is obviously forgetting or not doing it. It's not about them being impatient, they just want it done right and they deserve to have their money they earned. That's cool you had a situation where you were okay waiting for tip money, I wasn't getting help or an explanation on why I was missing multiple paychecks until I threatened to get a lawyer to help me, and it still took almost a year to get only MOST of it back, so you never know how long it won't get done.
Snarfungus3 points8m ago
yeah, not only is it against policy im like 90% sure it’s also illegal. so…this isn’t a misunderstanding or “OP being difficult” like you’re implying
clouds183-8 points8m ago
how is it against policy to give someone a loan out of your own pocket.
Snarfungus3 points8m ago
…just, no. lol if you don’t get it then you need to do some looking on the internet and find out why that is very wrong.
TransposedApophenia2 points8m ago
Policy says pay needs to be documented for the legal safety of the employee.
