We do not get paid enough, even though corporate raises prices every new season launch, and they have record profits. Base pay is 15 an hour, and tips usually come out to about a dollar for ese hour worked

i WISH our tips were like that! when i started last holiday season they were, and have slowly dwindled. i haven’t seen over .40/hr in tips in a few months

You get a dollar an hour for tips I wish last week it was .45/hr we celebrate when it’s .65/hr
Comfortable-Plane944 1 points 8m ago
That’s just an average, it’s not all the time. Sometimes more, sometimes less

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Is $15 more than other cafes?

I was surprised at how good the staff was at all the Starbucks I’ve visited that it makes me wonder do y’all have a good training without good pay or do y’all have good training and good pay compared to other cafés?

The service is much better than say Dunkin’ Donuts, but there’s nothing wrong with DDs service either.

15 is not much in todays market. In my state, I’ve seen that one needs 19 an hour in able to afford a one bedroom apartment by themselves. And the cost of living in my state, Michigan, isn’t nearly as high as others. And yea, we have great customer service we’re trained to make connections with customers.

Interesting. I feel like y’all should be making $20/hr which is one reason I posted in the first place. But I will start tipping. Thanks!

i’ve worked at starbucks and local coffee shops. the base pay for both is comparable although a lot of local shops have paid slightly more hourly in my experience. i live near NYC and starbucks pays our baristas $15 / hr and local cafes are usually $16-$17 in my area. the main difference is tips. at starbucks we average $0.45 per hour worked in tips. at local cafes i would average about $3 - $4 per hour in card tips and would take home about $30 in cash tips per shift worked.

so why work at starbucks when the pay sucks for the amount of work we are expected to do…. for most of us we need the benefits and local cafes don’t usually offer employees health benefits. also local cafes typically don’t have as flexible scheduling or as many hours to go around. i used to have more trouble getting hours at my local shops but now that i work at starbucks i can work 40 hours a week easily while still going to school since shifts start at 4:30 am.

tips are very very very appreciated but not expected and we are all aware the majority of customers do not tip and won’t hold it against you.

Wow 4:30am is crazy.
Thanks for sharing. I’ll definitely tip.

we get paid $15 an hour minimum. that sounds like a lot for starting pay but it’s really not.

to put that in perspective i work 20-30 hours a week and my paychecks average between 400-550 (on a good check). i do have a second job but i’m honestly lucky if i get a check over $300 from there. my rent is $935 monthly, and my monthly income is probably around $1400-$1500. so not very much left over for bills, utilities, car payment, transportation, groceries, let alone savings.

you are not at all obligated to tip us but it is greatly appreciated. the prices of drinks have been going up every launch, which is pretty frequent imo. in my area a venti iced white mocha with no mods costs $7.00. for every hour i work i can afford two of them, and i probably make at least 40 of them in that same hour. it sucks, it’s sad, and our drinks are ridiculously overpriced. i don’t expect tips from anyone unless it’s a large or overly complicated order. i know a lot of people are also living paycheck to paycheck and come through starbucks for a little pick me up, and i feel so guilty charging $7 for a drink that i made in like 20 seconds. if you have the extra cash, even just a dollar is super appreciated. but if you don’t want to spare a dollar or two , i do not blame you one bit. i personally don’t think our drinks are worth that much even *with* my employee discount. but starbucks knows people will pay for it anyways. if you can’t afford to tip, that is okay!!!! the one thing i will ask of customers is to please be patient with us because we are doing all we can <3

Thanks for your detailed friendly reply. It’s like you work at Starbucks or something 😛

I actually found the pumpkin spice latte that I had to taste like chemicals, I also try to café Misto and that was OK, but I really like your coffee. I might try a few more of the overprice drinks, but I will probably stick with coffee in the long run.

I order through the app, and after I get my order, there is a tip option on the app.

Should I tip by giving my barista a physical dollar or tip through the app? Do you have a preference?

Thank you.

Tipping is so appreciated no matter the form! The only plus to a cash tip is that we get that weekly in actual cash form where with digital tips or tips on the app they add them to our paychecks and partners have felt they don’t get what they should.
FrontalLobeGang 1 points 8m ago
Thanks. Cash it is.
Shoddy-Trainer-8051 7 points 8m ago
No we do not get paid enough, I personally don’t make enough off tips and people never tip on the app so that’s not even a supplemental tip income I can count on as it’s usually only like $3 a week. I make so little that if my boyfriend did not make as much as he does we could not afford to live on our own together.

Also: we don’t get raises when the price for product goes up so customers and corporate are the only affected by those inflations
FrontalLobeGang 1 points 8m ago
Wow $3/week in tips is basically nothing. It’s such a huge variance between stores, another person commented that they get $1/hour in tips.
bigfoots-rightnipple 3 points 8m ago
$15 dollar minimum and you can get more based on how long you’ve been with the company and performance. Tips at my store are about 2 an hour, but we’re a super high impact store, so it’s a stressful job. But there’s also a shit ton of partner benefits that kind of (not really) make up for the lower pay. I’ve had customers yell at me when the prices go up, and I just have to say something like “yeah I don’t know why prices went up. I’m certainly not getting paid anymore.”
FrontalLobeGang 1 points 8m ago

Very nice $2/hr in tips seem pretty decent. What’s a partner? What kind of benefits do you guys get and last question do you prefer cash or just getting tipped on the app?

7$ for a standard drink, we make probably 500+ drinks every hour, and only get paid the price of two of those drinks.
mangotangoafterdark 4 points 8m ago
no store is making 500+ an hour
clouds183 2 points 8m ago
its called an exaggeration dude. theres sure as hell no store making only two drinks per hour.

My store averages $60k-$80k a week, I make like $500 a week, and that's full time with tips. I totally get how much tipping culture sucks but with how agressively Starbucks is union busting we have no choice but to rely on your (greatly appreciated) tips until they chill out a bit.
FrontalLobeGang 1 points 8m ago
I don’t mind tipping especially if the service was good, and the five or so times I went through the Starbucks drive-through, I noticed that the service is especially good compared to other coffee shops, which just focus on speed. I feel like Starbucks focusses on speed, but also making the customer have a good moment of positivity.

Do you prefer cash or tipping through the app? Are tips pooled together or do you see who tipped you when it’s through the app?

Thank you!

At the very least, our wages are not below minimum with the excuse of tips. Does that mean it is enough? No. No minimum wage worker makes enough. None of them. I know many a barista who relies on tips to be able to get milk for their kids. In no job should you have to count on generosity of customers to get something you need to survive.

When I was employed by Starbucks the first time in 2007 they still paid starting wages above minimum, though not much by then. They were one of the only places where part time workers had health insurance and other benefits. They got stock options and other really nice bonuses. You could make a living off of working at SB, or just support yourself through school. Now most of that is untrue, and what little is left isn't a bonus for a SB partner but now just expected for any job. It is truly sad to see. SB is riding high on former good reviews for working for them. But that good view is dying quickly, I think by now most people know it isn't any better than any other company at all. Sad to see it.

I agree, every job should be paid a living wage and not rely on tips. I feel like after reading a bunch of comments here I am starting to understand why there’s a fight between you guys and corporate for unionizing! If I’m going through the drive-through, which is what I do 99% of the time, do you prefer being tipped with cash or in the app? Thank you.
