Forcing and coercion are two different things in real life. In Starbucks however, I believe they are one in the same. Superiors and baristas love saying “Starbucks can’t force you to do shit, just say no” but don’t realize the affects that saying no will have. Being coerced into picking up more shifts is a real thing… of course we can say no… but then we’ll be looked at as unreliable and not a team player or some other bullshit. Being coerced into quitting or transferring is a real thing too. But the moment it gets called out it’s “just say no.” How am I supposed to prioritize my well-being when those decisions affect my environment if they’re not aligned with what my superior wants?
