Questions from a teen looking for a part time job at starbucks :) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by v7rtual
hi starbucks employees! hope it's okay for me to ask my questions here - I'm a high school junior in search of a part time job and I'm really interested in applying at my local starbucks but I had a few questions first. thank you in advance for any answers <3

1. high schoolers who are baristas, how is your experience with working at starbucks? how well are you able to manage working along with your studies and extracurriculars?
2. on the online application, there is a chart of times and days asking you to check off times during which you are free. do shifts only start and end at these blocks of hours (like 12pm-5pm, and 5pm-10pm as seen on the chart) or would you be able to clock in and out at other hours like 2:30pm-7:30pm? (sorry if this is an odd question; I have never worked a job before and I am a little confused!)
3. \^ similar to the question above, are shifts generally only 5 hours as seen in the chart or would it be possible for them to be longer/shorter?
4. how strict are stores with the dress code? I've looked it over and it seems completely reasonable to me but I'm just wondering about the no leggings unless worn under a dress policy because I only really have flare leggings and I don't understand what is wrong with leggings

Not a HS student but I think can help.

1: this is mostly up to you and how you set up your availability after you’re hired. Additionally, many states have laws about minors working past a certain time, if that’s you, then you SM won’t be legally allowed to schedule you too late. Schedules are made 3 weeks out. Remember, respect is a two way street. Give your SM 3+ weeks notice of an upcoming restriction (that’s done online) and your SM should be able to make your schedule around it. Remember, if you’re accepting the job, you need to actually work, and not call out/constantly change your availability so that your SM can create effective schedules for everyone else as well.

2: no, shifts aren’t don’t like that at most stores. Some SMs and some DMs (district managers) might want to use “block scheduling,” but generally shifts are around a minimum of 4 hours and can be scheduled at any 15-min interval of the day. I’ve seen 7:45 AM-2PM. Make your hours more open pre-interview, then during the interview, just say that you’re in school, you can work most of that block that’s in question.

3: answered in 2

4: that depends on the DM and SM. My former SMs weren’t overly strict (in terms of not caring much about shirt colors). The week I left my store it got a new SM that would give people a written corrective action if employees didn’t have a name tag on or if the apron was dirty. Learn what your SM and DM expect, they’re the ones that actually enforce the rules.

Honestly, balancing work and school life is hard. You are going to have to be prepared to sacrifice a lot of your social life in lieu for the siren.

I’m a HS student who’s pretty actively involved in multiple different extracurriculars inside and outside of school with a heavy courseload and there are many nights where I’ll have to choose between sleeping or homework.

Be strict with what hours you work and how much you work.

Procrastination will spell out trouble really quickly for student part-time workers who procrastinate/have poor time management.

Leggings can be really thin (sometimes even see through) and thats not work appropriate, also you would not believe how many times i've ripped small holes in shirts by catching them on things, jeans or thicker pants like that are much harder to rip, and also offer more protection when you spill stuff on yourself, especially hotter liquids or stuff like molten cheese

that's true, I forgot to consider that leggings might not react so well with hot drinks/food. thank you!
