Yesterday I was told to not come in for my shift today. Today I was sent this text message but I didn't see it till just now. Could I get in trouble for not coming in? (i.redd.it)

According to the handbook, text messages are not an official form of communication, so you should be good. Explain to them that you didn’t see the text.

wait what??? my SM always text me to ask me if I can cover shift and we worked fine with that way,

this is just called a good work environment and communication. Same at my store, we are all chill and on the same page, typically no need for a phone call.

That is fine if they are comfortable with that and you are too. But it isn't "official" according to policy. I think your SM in this case is taking a risk by communicating like that, same way you would be taking a risk of getting in trouble if you tried to call out sick by sending a text but no one saw it in time to find coverage for your shift. To protect yourself, call the store when you are calling out, running late, etc.

I think it’s nice if it’s early in the day or a future shift (like a day or more away) to send a text as it’s not taking time from someone’s day off or waking them up etc. but they definitely can not get you in trouble for not responding/seeing a text. Picking up shifts is not required so that’s why I personally prefer texts for that (also more likely to get a response honestly) but if they are asking you to come in for a shift they told you you don’t have to show up for that’s a phone call level of communication and honestly they can’t require you too if it’s within 48 hours of the shift.

Who sent you this? Texts are not a valid form of communication per corporate policy. If you can’t call out with a text, they can’t call you in with one.

One of my coworkers. No idea who since no one bothered giving me their contact info.
neilgreenbreen 120 points 8m ago
Lmao yeah I’d just ignore it if it was me
kittykaty14 37 points 8m ago
Maybe they were trying to be friendly like "nooooo please still come in for your shift 💔👉🏼👈🏼🥺😭"
CBukowski808 173 points 8m ago
Nope. I wouldn’t go even if I did see the text. They can’t schedule me, un-schedule me, then schedule me again lol.
Kivic 84 points 8m ago
I think you can report it as junk and you’ll be fine.

If they really need you to come in, they can use an approved channel (calling you with the store phone) and ask nicely. Especially on such short notice, all they can do is ask.

The exception to this would be if someone other than your SM told you not to come in for your shift and it wasn’t approved by your SM, but I’m assuming that’s not the case.

Why were you told not to come in the first time?
MasterMischievous 28 points 8m ago
This. I feel like that’s a vital piece of info here.
HarleySpicedLatte 6 points 8m ago
Still no response though
MasterMischievous 2 points 8m ago
Yeah I’ve got a feeling the situation is actually on OP.

Late ass reply because I dont have reddit on my phone. It was definatley not on me lol. I was still in training and originally was planned to finish modules that day, but I had already completed them so I was told to not come in.
anxietysuckit 17 points 8m ago
If they didn’t take you off the schedule and just told you not to come in some store managers can be petty and say it was a no call no show. Be careful.
ManufacturerOk5442 10 points 8m ago
Did they bother calling you at all during any point in your shift?? If not then, no you can’t and shouldn’t get in trouble. They should’ve called if they really needed you to come in. It’s not fair to you for them to change their minds last min and not properly communicate that to u.

Nah
leanan_23 7 points 8m ago
What text? Lol
SNES182 5 points 8m ago
Fuck your sm lol. Text isn’t official and you were already told to take the day off.

For all the ppl going back and forth about “official” forms of communication, I would say that average communicating such as a general request to have someone cover a shift or something, a text works fine if everyone is on the same page about it. However things like asking a specific person to come in for a shift (supervisor to barista not barista to barista) or reminding someone about their schedule should be a phone call.

That being said this person was told they don’t have to come in, as such it’s perfectly reasonable for them to not be expecting a text to come in and thus not seeing it in time.

You’ll be fine
