I really hate the whole take a lunch first then two 10s later in the shift. It literally doesnt make any sense. I clocked in at noon and took my lunch at 2. Im forcing myself to eat a lunch because I know ill be starving later if I dont. This is the first company Ive worked at that does this.

No shift should ever work like that. At our store we do that on weekends before peak (because a lot of lunches land in the middle of peak which is a nightmare) or if the shift asks someone to due to staffing needs. 99% of the time it should be 10, 30, 10. Anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong.

I work at the busiest store in my city - and we have predictable peaks in the morning and afternoon which is why I think they do it. 😭 it just sucks. I tried asking if I could have a 10 30 10 but they said we cant.

What state are you in? That might be illegal. If you ever look at the DCR it’s always 10-30-10.

California - hmm Im gonna go research it

California states you can’t work more then 5 hours without a lunch. So it will depend on shift length. (There is some special policy stuff around waving it for 6 hours worked, but assuming it can’t be waived the lunch still needs to start at the end of the 5th hour.)
This means if you work an 8 hour shift they could send you on lunch 2 hours and 45 minutes in at the earliest. Likely still not ideal, but would make it slightly later.

I run 10’s and lunches two hours and then four hours (respectively) into the shift almost 100% of the time.
Even on days I know we will be busy, it is a sacrifice the team and I are willing to make. Having someone off the floor for 30 minutes during peak is not going to end the world. Making them or myself wait until after, or rushing to take all the lunches before, is ridiculous. My mental health, and my Partners mental health, is not worth sacrificing so Barbara can get her latte twenty eight seconds faster.
I think it’s nonsense.

I always ask if my baristas would rather take a lunch or a 10, assuming we have enough staffing to cover both 🤪
