As far as I understand you can only use sick time to cover shifts that you’ve been scheduled for

See, the phrasing in the benfits document is odd. Because it first says, "Sick time is available to replace income when a scheduled shift is missed", but then later says "If the need for sick time is foreseeable, you must provide reasonable advance notice..."

The latter makes it sound like you can scehdule use of sick time beyond any currently published schedules.

I think that’s for doctor’s visits and pre-scheduled medical stuff not just for padding a paycheck. I could be wrong though

they have to be used for a shift you called out of or left early, so one you were already scheduled for

For context, I’m taking some time off around November and I don’t have a lot of vacation hours since I barely hit the one year mark. Also, I’m debating to cancel my time off if I can’t use my sick time because I’m broke but also I really want the time off cuz I am physically and mentally exhausted and I haven’t had a break in a long time.

According to the Benefits Plan Description, you can use sick time to cover for physical and mental health well-being.

you can only use it for scheduled shifts, so the time off request will prevent any scheduled shifts, thereby preventing you from using your sick hours for mental health.
