Has anyone seen that one bean who went viral for having a breakdown in their back room? Thoughts?
clouds183161 points8m ago
I’ve cried on multiple 10 hour long shifts from getting overwhelmed and understaffing. it’s so much pressure and constantly getting yelled at by shift supervisors for doing small things “incorrectly” in their eyes. and then when you ask to be moved because you’re getting overwhelmed you’re told “we’re understaffed, thats not an option”.
Thts-atiny1 [OP]33 points8m ago
I’m asking/speaking from the position of supervisor. I think a huge problem is management and communication. Management should be proactive to watch and say so and so is behind or looks stressed let me move them and the partners need to be vocal BEFORE it becomes an issue not after when they can no longer function
hotcheetomamii121 points8m ago
i honestly cant blame them. this job is taxing. being on your feet all day, having to talk to hundreds maybe even thousands of customers, all to make like $14 an hour. people are being way to harsh on them. and conservatives are using it to like make fun of minimum wage workers, and pushing their own “well i work 15 hours work days with no break they shouldn’t be complaining” agenda. congrats you’re also being taken advantage of by capitalism. super odd and fucked up.
BakerBetty2049 points8m ago
15 hours a day at a desk job or sitting through meetings is significantly different from this job where you are on your feet the entire time, always rushing to meet drive times and getting constantly critiqued by the customers in addition to supervisors. Plus forcing yourself to always be cheerful outwardly is exhausting, especially if you’re going through stuff.
hotcheetomamii25 points8m ago
i agree, cant wait to finish school so i can work a boring ass job LMAO
Thts-atiny1 [OP]-24 points8m ago
Idk maybe I’m cold and dead inside but baristas make $15 and shifts $19 and we’re all getting a raise in January. I think partners need to speak up when they feel like they’re being taken advantage of or the floor could be run differently. At the same time (I’m 23 with no political affiliation) these kids are too soft. They can’t work more than five hours without pitching a fit for everything. I’ve gone 9.5 hours or more with nothing but a ten minute break and I’m an opener most days. When the job overwhelms me I use productive coping mechanisms instead of having a literal emotional breakdown because working with the public sucks sometimes. I knew that going in and who the new beans don’t know I’m not sure but they need to wake up and smell the coffee.
shittalkingbeanpole10 points8m ago
the fact is some people are simply not right for this job. i understand that a lot of people take jobs at starbucks for the benefits and the trans healthcare options etc.
but it has been and will remain a fast paced work environment with a big focus on customer service, third place vibe, etc. the goal is to be fast and friendly.
you’ve got to be able to take criticism on the floor and not take it personally. now there is definitely a right and wrong way to correct someone. we have standards for how a coaching moment is supposed to go down. just like we have standards for everything else. but if you can’t take that feedback and understand that this is your work environment and has nothing to do with you personally then you’re gonna have a bad time.
tacosubterfuge3 points8m ago
Literally, and as a shift I feel so unsupported when it is time to coach. There are pros and cons to the bux culture, but if you do not rip a page out of a therapist handbook and word yourself so carefull when coaching,, you're the one being blamed in the end if it isn't received as productive/positive. Even with positive intent.
I've quit telling my sm about certain recurring behaviors bc I'm tired of having talks about how I'm supposed to approach a situation when the other person isn't meeting me halfway.
shittalkingbeanpole2 points8m ago
it’s honestly such bullshit
sometimes someone needs to hear “hey, we’ve talked about this 4 times now and you continue to make this same mistake. What’s not clicking?”
I really hate working with partners who have a bad attitude. i get having off days but if you’re in a shit mood every shift… figure it out.
Thts-atiny1 [OP]-2 points8m ago
I guarantee the downvotes are coming from the contributors to the shenanigans
sushibroni9 points8m ago
they’re new, i knew exactly what i was going into and yet i still had days where i literally threw up at work from stress when i first started. everyone deals with things differently and everyone has different limitations. i can’t find the video so i don’t exactly know the context but not everyone has strong coping mechanisms they can use. i will agree that posting breakdowns isnt the most productive solution tho lol
shittalkingbeanpole6 points8m ago
chopping mechanisms are huge. walk to the back, take a sip of water, count to 10, exhale. you got this.
i’m not saying abandon your post but if you feel like your about to burst please say something to your shift. they should be able to pick up your slack for a minute or two so you can take 30 seconds by yourself to get it together and come back feeling more capable. speak up way before it gets to the point of tears i beg you it’s not worth it.
if you’re not in an environment where you feel like you are able to do that then i’m sorry that your leaders are not following through on their end of the bargain. i admit my manger is pretty cool and newly promoted from another district. she’s done the job and knows how to support her baristas.
[deleted]1 points8m ago
I am 24 (almost 25) and I agree . I just started working at Starbucks but my manger schedules me longer shifts (because I told them work me as much possible) and there teens and even people in 20s saying “omg 8 hrs is long shift” “you shouldn’t be working that long” nah I came from shitter job that was much worse and you had make sales. (Sams club). I gad customer throw full baskets/flat beds at me. This job yes gets overwhelming but every job does. Legitly if customers that unhappy I just take it just let roll off me because honesty funny to me that there willing get this mad over cup of coffee. (I was also raised by father who was general manger of papa johns) so I grew up seeing that people are shitty. (Watch people throw pizza have full hissy fit) so nothing surprises or fazes me. It job I come in work and leave.
And if job does make me cry I do off the clock because I don’t get paid cry on clock. If to bad I would ask move position for little bit to relax and breathe if I need (only if we staffed correctly)
imlivinginurwall92 points8m ago
I don’t get why people post their breakdowns on the Internet
clouds18320 points8m ago
maybe to let other coworkers who also have breakdowns on shift know that they’re not alone

vanilllacakez1 points8m ago
Bc they can. Don’t like it don’t watch.. videos can help ppl not feel alone
captainsasss9 points8m ago
Agree don’t watch if u don’t want. Doesn’t change the fact that it’s abnormal to pull out ur phone, find the camera app, point camera at yourself, and press record while ur having a break down.
Available-Theory622889 points8m ago
I was just on the phone with my manager and my DM, they were claiming I didn’t open the store at the correct time and that there have been clients complaining. Got threaded with “severe consequences” if it was the case… the client mentioned a different store, the DM just read the town it was in (this one has two stores very close to each other) and decided it was mine, which led to 20 minutes back and forth of me sending them LITERAL RECEIPTS of orders made at 6am and they still saying it was my store. I seriously need a good screaming session on the back room or at least get to punch one client
romanianhopscotch52 points8m ago
Every partner should get to fight 1 customer every quarter.
GVRDENS_115 points8m ago
Make it one a week
honey_bay80 points8m ago
i just disassociate during the shift and cry when i get home, gotta at least protect my makeup
Blubludance28 points8m ago
I hold it until I clock out then I sit in my car to cry before I leave
Brilliant_List73817 points8m ago
the amount of times these last few weeks ive cried ALL my makeup off at work LMAOO
Thts-atiny1 [OP]5 points8m ago
90% of why I do my makeup is to deter me from crying at work 🤣 I had two call outs one day pre peak then another during peak and our Nitro broke. I thought about crying then said nope. Save it kid.
Tvdrone1665 points8m ago
I just say, anyone can work at Starbucks, but Starbucks isn't for everyone.
Thts-atiny1 [OP]4 points8m ago
And that’s okay! But if it’s not for you then I advise looking for something else instead of crying online
DustbinFunkbndr28 points8m ago
They need a wake up call about how the world really works. Yeah, some customers are awful, especially Starbucks customers, but the job isn’t THAT hard.
Also, 4 partners on the floor is fine. Part time during the week plus 8.5hr shifts on weekends is fine.
None of what they brought up was worth their absolute train wreck of a reaction.
They acknowledged they have mental health struggles and are going through a lot, I can empathize with that, but they need to get some more of their shit figured out and they especially need to get off the internet.
hatman_v411 points8m ago
I work in retail as well and honestly it's easier than Starbucks. But then again, I don't like interacting with customers.
Thts-atiny1 [OP]9 points8m ago
I love it 👏🏽
shittalkingbeanpole3 points8m ago
if everyone on the floor is at their station and **on their shit** it can even be fun 🥲
DustbinFunkbndr1 points8m ago
It definitely can. It’s hard. Dealing with people is hard. But it isn’t digging the trenches and worrying about incoming mortars causing me to have a complete breakdown hard
Ceramicusedbook23 points8m ago
I'll be surprised if they aren't terminated. Starbucks has a strick social media policy,do they not?
nightimevil4 points8m ago
Kinda yeah, we're allowed to post in our aprons, but the basic idea that they gave us is "don't make us look bad" which is what any company would say.
So like we can totally show off our latte art skills in a tiktok, but we shouldn't be making drinks against standard in a tiktok video (like not modifying it, just making it completely wrong and showcasing it as correct). Does that make sense? I feel like I worded that weirdly.
Ceramicusedbook9 points8m ago
I'm pretty sure sobbing in a backroom like this counts as making the company look bad.
nightimevil6 points8m ago
Yeah, it does. I remember seeing it yesterday and got really angry at the post, and I'm a lot calmer about it now. I don't know what that barista had to go through, but I think it's crossing a line to record yourself having a breakdown.
Maybe it's just me, but if I'm gonna break down emotionally (anywhere), I try to make sure no one sees me and don't think about recording it. We all have hard days, and Starbucks is only getting busier with Holiday coming up, but that's a given. I just can't understand why they thought to record themselves having a breakdown with the intentions of posting it.
I hope they figure it out for themselves, because Starbucks is not for everyone. I thought about quitting like 3 months in because my first manager walked out and my second one sucked, but I stuck with it and am happy where I am now. Sometimes I still struggle with the pace because this is my first year, so the transition from Summer to Fall in terms of how busy it gets was hard on me. It felt like our amount of customers doubled for a while, and now we still have more than the usual amount in the mornings. I feel slightly more prepared for the Holiday Launch, but I'm still nervous. I didn't know how busy Starbucks actually was until I started to work here.
NeonnSloth3 points8m ago
I had the same exact thought. As a fellow barista I felt awful seeing them so stressed but also... never in a million years would I ever record myself having a breakdown at work and then post it online
Final_Assistance_5063 points8m ago
i remember when a store in san diego had an issue with masking and a partner got verbally abused by a customer. Some bystanders made a gofundme and met a large goal (idk how much but a lot. ) Corporate got word and he was met with an ultimatum, either give all the money back/donate and keep the job OR keep the money n get fired. like wtf
BittyBun21 points8m ago
Honestly I feel bad for them. Especially since I saw some republican on twitter being like “Trans barista has breakdown over working 🙄” like. WHATS THE POINT IN BRINGING UP THEYRE TRANS 💀
Edit because another thought: I just feel like they didn’t need to post it? Like all that’s gonna happen is theyre gonna get hate and negative attention. Also Starbucks won’t take this nicely so at least they won’t have to worry about working at it any longer I guess? Idk lol

Thts-atiny1 [OP]-1 points8m ago
I would have felt bad for them but it’s the literal internet in 2022. You run the risk of going viral for ANYTHING. Why out a target on your back?
shittalkingbeanpole2 points8m ago
it’s honestly weird behavior and i don’t know why we try to normalize it so much it’s not healthy for either party
chamorrobro20 points8m ago
I haven’t seen it, but this is an interesting one. I remember when my manager brought up how the floor used to be so much better staffed YEARS ago, but now it’s at the whole “optimum worker amount” stage of corporate optimization.
I’ll never forget when they did the new plays a few years ago and they outright admitted to how much someone solo in drive through has to do. It’s insane.
It makes me wonder where all the money is going and if they could afford to put one more person on the floor while keeping current wages.
Also rushes, busting ass, call outs, and rude customers are A LOT. The person may have overreacted, but let’s not forget these things. Also, LET’S NOT FORGET that it’s POSSIBLE that these are issues that Starbucks should strive to tackle in the future. Especially tackling the rude customers. ~~Some Karens need to get bodied like it’s the NFL or some shit~~
geekgurl8114 points8m ago
I’ve literally worked a 12hr shift as a nurse at an urgent care during flu season that wasn’t as exhausting as a 5hr shift at Starbucks. The stress was similar but the pay/quality of life was so much better. That was back before Covid though, when people still somewhat respected health care workers.
de4thstroller2 points8m ago
everyone has different capabilities.
geekgurl812 points8m ago
For sure, and my own capabilities are different than they were 10 years ago, as well.
bagels22435713 points8m ago
I understand their feelings because we’ve all been there and understand how badly the siren operates sometimes, but I can see how people from the outside think the person was overreacting/being whiny
Environmental-Air78110 points8m ago
We have all been there. The day after my dog died I was at work on bar with tears in my eyes while customers asked for straws 😂 hood I didn’t get tears in anyones drinks 😂
oldsoulsandyounggods6 points8m ago
I understand that 😂 my old girl passed last month and someone's in the drive asked for a pupcup and their dog had a very similar name to mine 😂 had to sit down after that.
Environmental-Air7812 points8m ago
I hope your doing ok.. even tho it’s been a month that spot in your heart hurts for a while 🥺
Tie-Academic9 points8m ago
They should consider transferring to a dead store. I feel like we’re gonna be seeing more people like this that can’t handle a regular 8-8.5 hour shift as the younger generations join the workforce and realize they gotta do this shit regularly if they wanna survive in life. Yes mental health is a serious issue, but Starbucks, your superiors and your baristas provide a wide range of support that most jobs won’t even care to provide. Running to Tik Tok isn’t gonna solve anything, and now they’re making their store look bad because it looks like they treat their baristas like shit, when that may not be the full case.
Abject_Compote_143631 points8m ago
To be fair, I worked in kitchens my entire life, regularly with 10+ hour shifts, and I’ve never been so exhausted after 6 hours on a Sunday at Bux. This isn’t a typical 8 hour job, and constant short staffing doesn’t help. Perpetuating the idea that workers have to tolerate the shitty business practices of the place they work to survive only prolongs these kinds of issues and places blame on “lazy” workers.
wellthisisjusttiring24 points8m ago
Yep exactly. I don’t know why everyone has to give this poor bean the whole “this is life” talk as if they don’t know what life is like. I work so hard at work, but when it short staffed and a rush? It’s *awful* and it makes me feel like a mess. It just takes one spill or one empty syrup to throw even the best off guard. On top of that you have the lingering pressure that is customers waiting.
Anyone that gives me a “back in my day we did 50hrs a week and we sucked it up blah blah” is more than welcome to suck up my fist in their face as I send them back to their day. Y’all are from the age where you can work 50hrs a week and have a house, a car, a stay at home wife, and two kids; I’m from the age of working 50hrs a week and I can’t even afford a home! We work hard and get taken advantage of yet get nothing out of it. We all that bean crying in the back sometimes. Life is rough. I hope they’re okay.
BatWeary3 points8m ago
Me too. I was regularly working 11 hour shifts on the weekends, as many hours I could during the week when I was in high school (I was 18 & my managers were fine with it—dw) and still went home & went out with friends. Tired, yeah. But now I pull a 6 hour here and I’m dead for the rest of the day
greenChainsaws8 points8m ago
i have not seen it but theres days in this job where i cry in the back. its a stressful job. folx deserve a second to breathe
Thts-atiny1 [OP]3 points8m ago
I agree since I’ve been there where I needed to go in the bathroom and take a minute to collect myself. It’s a different thing to stop what your doing and record a breakdown. If it was me and I walked into that; I’m sorry but no. I’ll comfort you I’ll talk you off the ledge whatever. But carrying on like he did? Please just go home and reevaluate at that point.
greenChainsaws1 points8m ago
wait did they get recorded by someone else or themselves
Thts-atiny1 [OP]2 points8m ago
Themselves
FlowerCurious5818 points8m ago
Starbucks has that effect on people
Foreign_Service31027 points8m ago
I don't work at Starbucks anymore but i had a Thanksgiving shift and i left the building sobbing. Someone ordered two blueberry scones and we were out, so she started crying and said it was supposed to be her Thanksgiving dinner. People share way too much with the baristas, that's part of why i quit. The "costumer connections" are horrible for empaths because we steal the feelings and soak them up ourselves.
Toomanyboringpeople7 points8m ago
The one with the kid crying bc they had to work an eight hour shift with four people? I think it makes us look bad. Some baristas have legitimate complaints but then you have people like that having a breakdown over something so small it’s easy for people to then be like “Well look they’re literally crying over working a fairly normal shift, they’re just weak”. Four people depending on business could be a not great thing, but it’s definitely manageable. Idk I try to be empathetic but honestly I found that video a bit embarrassing. The things they were complaining about is legit just real world problems they have to learn to cope with.
lilmissambersue5 points8m ago
I would love to have 4 people on the floor at once. We had only 2 with a 3rd for like 1.5 hours. Got a new manager and now we have 3 people until 30 mins before close and its great.
I notice a lot of people, not just baristas, don't take care of themselves outside of work. And then work is frustrating and on top of everything else they break down at work. It's sad but also, a shitty part of life that we just... gotta learn to deal with. This job is physically and mentally draining but it's crazy how when I am aware of my body and mental health and try to take care of it, work is less hard on me. Like, just drinking more water, eating vegetables and doing yoga at home makes such a difference. And I have mental illness on top of it all. Also....filming yourself crying is weird. That's my personal opinion.
Toomanyboringpeople1 points8m ago
Oh yeah, my store still does blocks and closing block has only three people bc we get less traffic, but I would still kill to have four people! Idk I think the video was a bit ignorant
lilmissambersue3 points8m ago
I should add I haven't actually seen the video... lol is it on the tik tok?
Toomanyboringpeople3 points8m ago
Oh yeah that’s fair 😂 here it is: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTR9vDUpG/ It’s just some kid crying bc they were one person down and they had to work an 8 hour shift
Rasbearylemon5 points8m ago
I've been a barista for 4 years, supervisor for 2, and have been operating as an asm for 1.5 of my supervisor years. I was an overtime university student and worked over time at starbucks. The one advice I give to over achieving baristas who are sacrificing their mental and their studies, especially to the minors- it ain't worth it. I'm 22 years old with arthritis, chronic back pain, and major FOMO. I have had many breakdown sessions. This job is killer and the benefits aren't worth it.
Cheedanish5 points8m ago
The situation is so mundane but the mental health standpoint is so real.
I had my first sensory meltdown at work today and had to step off and take a breath. Post-peak. Normal 8 hour shift, normal breaks, normal pace. There was a second SSV along with myself and we were overstaffed by 2. There was just too much input and I just could not hold it together.
Sometimes it’s the situation but sometimes it’s just how it happens. Sometimes it’s a 3 person high volume peak with all channels and I can still connect and resolve tension like a master. And some days are like today.
No amount of normalcy can tell you what your emotional state is supposed to be like on the floor. Food service is stressful literally all the time no matter what! You have to take care of yourselves and you need to put your safety and wellbeing first, whether that means communicating with your supervisor, or arguing and bargaining until you get the support you need :)
Helpful_Hour_21954 points8m ago
Honestly, it broke my heart to see them having a breakdown. I think this world could use a whole lot more compassion.
deathbeforedecaf19843 points8m ago
When I was a lead at corporate 10 years ago, I had someone walk off shift and try to unalive themselves. This job can take a bigger toll than most people believe
Jaded_Fun_71331 points8m ago
I think as much as the person needs the money that bad, instead of working at one of the most stressful place possible, work literally anywhere else… If you are in school you have opportunities to more lax jobs on campus, for example I’m currently also working at my colleges library where I have no stress at all it’s so nice! but I’m staying at sbux bc I have a good store and don’t wanna leave my friends there until I have to! But I don’t think this person should themselves through this stress when they don’t need to
lilmissambersue5 points8m ago
True, but also...I've applied at literally 13 other places. Most of which would be way easier and less stressful. So now it's kinda like, discouraging and I'm like fuck it I will just stay at the bux. I'll keep looking but the discouragement of getting denied over and over is depressing and thus makes it hard to continue. Especially when you already have job and don't have a ton of time to spend it looking.
