Continuing the opener v closer debate (self.starbucksbaristas)

Why do you want to continue it? It just creates more unneeded animosity between partners.

Corporate is already trying to drive a wedge between us, and even in jest, they don’t need any assistance. I know you have no malicious intent, I’m just sick of this “debate.”

I might get downvoted for saying this, but while I 100% get frustrations from both sides (I’m usually a closer), we all need to realize that the store can’t run without both teams.

I highly doubt there’s no malicious intent in OP’s post. But 100% agree with everything you said. This argument is so old and aside from the few lazy partners across all shifts, each side has their ups and downs.

Yeah I was just bored lol but I understand where you’re coming from

Best reply in my opinion!

If opening is so easy then just switch shifts and stop fucking complaining.
Tie-Academic [OP] 0 points 8m ago
Where did I complain? I do both

The implication that opener’s don’t have to do shit. Sorry, maybe your store is super slow in the mornings, but mine isn’t. We work hard even if we’re not doing the deep cleaning, we’re cleaning as we go and prepping everything so we can survive through peak. Not to mention not all of us can just go home and sleep all day, I work a full time job 6 days a week. I’m just tired of this argument. The problem isn’t openers vs closers, it’s STARBUCKS not keeping us staffed enough across the whole day so they can keep more money for themselves and make us run like mice on a wheel for small scraps of cheese.

this debate makes me laugh bc my store was so ass backwards. as an opener i had to pill the espresso machines, clean, stock, take out garbages that were left full, and make whips for the day…. in addition to all the actual opening tasks….. by myself….. no second opener just an ssv…. so i really think it’s not a debate between the specific shifts but between you and your coworkers. some openers suck, some are great. some closers suck, some are great
Tie-Academic [OP] 2 points 8m ago
Oh wow yeah I’d be pissed if I had to open like that
wavvyhag 2 points 8m ago
yea i guess in my case my beef is with incompetent management 😂

i work opens mids and closes. each job has it hard for its own reasons. if you work at a store that has a “debate” between which shifts work harder then you need to move to a different store that treats each other like a team, not a competition. such a fucked view of your coworkers. you’re all there for the same reason.

Openings were fit for me when I was working at Starbucks until my store closed mid summer this year.

1) I have basically a full day to myself after work

2) My store opened at 4:30am, so we got there at 4am, did our morning tasks such as the food case, date the foods, fill the ice, turn espresso machines on, etc.

3) You get a few hours to fully wake up before the rush (7am for my old store). You can stand around, my shifts were cool so we'd just prep things or drink coffee and chat. This is also a good time to build some customer connections (lol) with the regs that come in the morning. I worked by a hospital so we did have some early morning birds.

4) (and again) your day ends at 12pm!!!!!!1 take a giant nap once you get home or yolo and just stay up (risk the energy crash at like 3pm tho) you don't rly have to stay later doing closing

It really depends on location. Some locations get swamped early, and it's non-stop for many hours. Others have evening rush and doing closing while also doing rush is a nightmare. As I mentioned in other thread, everyone needs to work as a team. If closers didn't get to all the dishes, mop all the floors, or didn't take out all the trash, openers need to step up and take care of those tasks. It doesn't help anyone complaining about how closers are so bad they left us trash or they didn't clean the lobby completely.

This 👏 our store definitely gets busy super early and even when we’re not busy we’re getting everything ready for peak so that we can stay on top of everything. Sometimes there are bad closes and that’s usually bc something unexpected happened throughout the day and it’s just a vicious cycle. But just how openers need to step up if closers can’t get to everything, closers need to stop acting like openers are just lounging around doing absolutely nothing and that it’s all the openers fault if there’s a lot to do, it takes all day keeping up with tasks for it to work.

As an opener/peak worker, I consider cleaning a privilege.
Cleaning is so relaxing compared to making 100 drinks per half-hour, or socking hundreds of items as we burn through them faster than you can say bob’s your uncle.

If I could, I’d switch to being a closer, since you hardly have to make any drinks, (like 25 per half-hour, tapering down to like, 15 at the end.) You *also* get to just zone out and clean stuff.
Plus—you get free food as often as not. 🥲

Also, since you don’t have to wake up at 3:00 am, you’re probably all rested and shit.
Sure, you probably don’t get off until 10:00 sometimes, but I used to not get off until 11:00 when I worked at Subway, and it isn’t too bad. You can just sleep late the next morning, with *no worries* of being late to work. It’s practically impossible for you to be late to work (which is less mentally stressful) I have nightmares about being late to work. 😅

Sure, working late impacts your social-life, but so does waking up early, since you have to sleep in the afternoon to makeup for waking up at 3:00 am.

I do get it, since you’re so short-staffed, you probably run back and forth a lot to get things done—but so do openers. Only for you, nothing too dreadful will happen if you go slower. You’ll just get off later. What happens if I go slow in the morning when we only have 2-3 people (during our first 3 hours of work) is that we’ll have a line around the building and customers cussing me out and flipping me off and calling me a horrible idiot of a waste of space if their coffee or tea isn’t ready *right now* if I went a little too slow opening (think—5 minutes too slow) Decaffeinated zombies are just—cruel sometimes. I feel like the evening customers are happier since they’ve probably already had some coffee earlier in the day. 😃

It’s not really a debate. Our opening shift is five people standing around sipping coffee out on the floor while their main SSV finds things to whine about in My Daily. Closing is a race to finish up on time every night.
badatlife15 5 points 8m ago
That sounds like a your store problem 🙄 our store openers don’t have time to stand around
Shoddy-Trainer-8051 2 points 8m ago
I am my stores primary barista opener. Meaning I prob open like 20 days a month. Every morning that I open I have to make a bunch of backups, stocking, prepping and such, I have to label pastries, and throw away pastries they didn’t at least twice a week. And I got in the habit of always checking dates on RT&D cause the closers miss them
hatman_v4 2 points 8m ago
Morning is easier by far. I've done both. I prefer closing though because I like cleaning.
AJ228842 1 points 8m ago
Work both shifts and you can decide for yourself. Both have challenges and neither is easy, stop comparing them. Plus every store is different too. If you don’t like your shift it’s not hard to change it either

Me, feeling privileged to be a parent only available during school hours 🙃
Beneficial-Weird-817 2 points 8m ago
I definitely think this post is misunderstanding that side of things
Torirock10 1 points 8m ago
closers don’t get free food lmao we have to donate it cuz someone snitched on the shifts to the manager that they were giving away food to us
